  일본의 어디를 가든, 도시든 지방이든, 개인 집이든 숙소든, 식당이든 동네의 골목이든 나에겐 무엇 하나 예사롭게 보아 넘길 수 있는 게 하나도 없다. 건축 공사 현장의 안전시설과 소음방지(騷音防止) 시설이 그렇고 식당과 숙소의 크고 작은 시설물 등이 그렇다. 욕실의 변기 물 사용과 식당의 음식물 하나도 그렇고 쓰레기 분리수거도 그렇다. 그들에겐 공간이든 물질이든 시간이든 그냥 낭비하는 것이 없다. 더 넓게 보면 그들의 삶 자체가 그렇게 보인다. 그들의 사생관(死生觀)과 무관치 않을 것이다.
  
  암튼, 그들의 이런 모습이 나에겐 놀랍다기보단 자연스럽다. 이미 알고 있던 사실을 현장에서 재확인하는 것이니까. 일제시대(日帝時代)에 장기간 일본에 사셨던 부모님과 친척한테서 수없이 들었던 당시의 실감 나는 일본 이야기도 있었지만, 실은 그보다 더 실감 나고 더 사실적인 것이 있었다. 직접 경험이다. 나는 직장에서 일할 때 내 눈을 통해 어른들이 일본에서 배운 기술과 정신을 직접 보고 듣고 배웠다.
  
  나는 주경야독(晝耕夜讀) 세대다. 낮에는 공장에서 일하고 밤에는 야학(夜學)했다. 서울의 60년대 초, 사회 구석구석은 아직 모든 것이 미비(未備)한 상태. 가내공업 수준의 고만고만한 공장들이 생겼다 사라지기를 밥 먹듯 했다. 그야말로 조생모사(朝生暮死)였다. 그러다 보니 여러 공장을 전전했다. 그 가운데 좀 오래 있었던 공장은 반지 등을 만드는 액세서리 공장, 인형공장. 전축 조립 공장, 토끼 고기 가공 공장, 가발공장 등.
  
  여기에 공통점이 있었다. 공장 사장님들은 모두 일제 시대에 일본에 건너가 기술을 배운 분들이었다. 그분들은 매사에 꼼꼼하고 철저하셨다. 작업실 주변은 물론 작업대 아래 떨어진 고무줄 하나, 나사못 하나, 철사 토막 하나 그냥 지나친 적이 없었다. 그것들을 통에 모아 둔 것도 봤다. 그런 모습을 볼 때마다 뭔가 죄 짓는 느낌이었다. 그때 나름대로 보고 느낀 교훈이랄까, 그 정신이 오늘날까지 평생 가고 있다(三歲之習 至于八十).
  
  누구나 아는 말, ‘로마는 하루아침에 이뤄지지 않았다.’‘로마’ 대신 다른 나라를 넣어본다. 영국, 프랑스, 독일, 스페인, 네덜란드, 포루투갈, 그리스, 일본, 미국. 이스라엘. 그렇다. 말이 된다. 이 나라들은 분명 하루아침에 만들어진 나라가 아니다. 하루아침에 무너지지도 않았고 앞으로도 그럴 것이다. 그럼 이 자리에 ‘大韓民國’을 넣어보자. 그렇다. 말이 안 된다. 내가 보기엔 그렇다. 자유와 풍요를 너무 빨리 너무 쉽게 얻은 기적(奇蹟)의 나라이기 때문이다. 원래 기적은 오래 머물지 않는 법. ‘쉽게 얻는 건 쉽게 잃는다’라는 만고(萬古)의 진리가 있다.
  
  일본의 구석구석을 아무리 살펴봐도 빈 틈이 보이지 않는다. 부럽다. 그러나 한편 우울하다. 어제, 이곳 숙소의 식당에서 아침 식사를 할 때다. 삿포로 TV 뉴스에 ‘삼성전자 노조가 드디어 파업을 했다’는 뉴스가 떴다. 식사 중이던 투숙객들의 시선이 TV로 집중됐다. ‘삼성’이란 이름 때문이다. 삼성은 곧 성공한 大韓民國의 상징이다. 그러나 바로 그 삼성을 미워하고 위협하는 자가 남이 아닌 바로 한국인 자신들이란 점이다. 나를 한없이 슬프고 부끄럽게 했다.

  What I’m thinking of 6 – Japan always reminds me of something
  
  Everywhere I travel in Japan, whether it's a metropolis or a region, a private residence, motel, restaurant, or a neighborhood alley, everything feels essential to me. There are safety facilities on building sites, as well as big and small facilities in restaurants and hotels. The usage of toilet water in restrooms, food in restaurants, and garbage collection are all the same. They don't waste anything, including space, materials, and time. In general, it appears that their lifestyles are like this. Like their transparent perspective on life.
  
  Anyway, their emergence seemed more natural than startling to me. Because I felt again what I already knew before. As with the realistic stories of Japan that I heard from my parents and relatives who lived in Japan for a long time during the Japanese colonial period, I had something more realistic to offer. This was my own experience. Working in sectors allowed me to see and hear directly the talents and passion that people developed in Japan.
  
  I worked in a factory during the day and attended school at night. In Seoul in the early 1960s, every aspect of society remained unfinished. Factories as tiny as the household industry were established and dismantled. As a consequence, I visited numerous factories. Among them, I worked for a long period at an accessory factory that created rings, a doll factory, a factory that produced electric record players, a rabbit meat processing factory, and a wig factory etc.
  
  There was something common here. During the Japanese colonial era, every manufacturing owner came to Japan to study new techniques. They were attentive and thorough with everything. They never passed by not just around the room, but also a rubber band, a screw, or a wire that had fallen beneath the workstation. I also saw them gathered in a container. Whenever I saw that, I felt like I was guilty of something. I'm now making the most of the talents and enthusiasm I learnt from them for the rest of my life.
  
  "Rome was not built in a day." Let's put another nation in place of "Rome." Britain, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, Japan, and the USA. Israel. It sure makes sense. They were not built in a day nor disappeared overnight, and they won't. Then let's put "Korea" in this spot. No. It doesn't make sense to me. It's because ROK is a miracle country that achieved independence and prosperity much too swiftly and effortlessly. Miracles seldom endure long. It's like saying, "Easy come, easy go.“
  
  I can't find any weaknesses in Japan, no matter how hard I look. I'm envious of them. However, I am depressed. While enjoying breakfast at this hotel restaurant, I saw on Sapporo TV that 'the Samsung Electronics union had finally gone on strike'. All eyes were on the TV. It's because of the brand name "Samsung." Samsung symbolizes the Republic of Korea's achievements. However, it made me sad and humiliated that those who despise and threaten Samsung are not outsiders, but Koreans themselves.
