<생각해 보니 10 – 대한민국이 자랑스럽다>
  
  나는 어린이에게는 미래의 꿈이 무엇인지 물어보고, 어른들에게는 과거의 꿈이 무엇이었냐고 물어본다. 애든 어른이든 이 질문에 묵묵부답이 있는가 하면, 눈동자를 반짝이며 열심히 자신의 꿈을 설명하는 사람이 있다. 며칠 전 숙소의 로비에서 30대 초반의 일본인 젊은이와 대화를 나눴다. 그는 직장인이었다. 영어가 통했다. 이야기 도중에 나는 그에게 그의 어릴 적 꿈이 무엇이었냐고 물었다. 나의 돌발 질문에 한동안 멍하더니 오히려 나에게 같은 질문을 했다. 나는 주저 없이 답했다.
  
  세계 여행이 꿈이었으며 그 목적 가운데 하나는 한국전쟁(6·25남침)에 참전하고 병참과 의료를 대폭 지원한 22개국을 직접 찾아가 감사를 표하는 것이었다고. 그는 의외의 답을 들은 듯 고개를 갸우뚱하더니 더 자세를 얘기를 듣기를 원했다. 내가 그에게 전해준 내용은 다음과 같다.
  
  1950년 6월 25일 새벽 4시, 북한 김일성이 중공 모택동과 소련 스탈린과 음모(陰謀)해 남침했다. 공산화 직전의 풍전등화(風前燈火)였다. 바로 이때 미국을 중심으로 한 유엔 참전국 16개국이 급히 달려와서 우리 국군과 함께 싸웠다. 침략자들을 물리쳤다. 물론 의료지원국 6개국의 원조도 뒤따랐다. 평생 잊을 수 없는 고마움이었다. 나는 그분들의 나라를 하나하나 방문했다. 고귀한 님들의 희생을 기억하면서 그곳의 참전비(參戰碑) 앞에서 경례하고 감사의 마음을 전했다. 나의 꿈 중 하나를 이룬 셈이다. 매년 맞이하는 6·25 기념일이면 세계 배낭여행 중 가장 보람 있었던 당시의 순간순간을 떠올린다. 빚진 마음에서 다소 위안을 얻으면서 나와의 약속을 지킨 것에 자부심을 느낀다.

  물론 나는 군대 생활 중에도 그랬고 전역(轉役) 후에도 6·25 남침 전쟁이 치열했던 곳을 가능한 한 많이 찾아가 보았다. 그분들의 충혼(忠魂)을 기리며 추모했다. 그분들의 애국심과 희생이 아니었으면 지금의 성공한 자유대한민국(自由大韓民國)은 없을 것이다. 더더욱 꿈속에서나 그려 본 세계 곳곳을배낭 메고 자유롭게 원(願)도 한(限)도 없이 누려본다는 것은불가능했을 것이다(焉敢生心). 기껏 존재한다 한들 지금의 북한 주민들처럼 최악의 공산 집단인 김일성 세습 체제(진짜 헬조선)에서 짐승보다 못한 삶, 명(命)줄만 겨우 이어가고 있음이 분명하기 때문이다.
  
  동작동 국립현충원, 국립대전 현충원, 용산 전쟁 기념관, 부산 유엔기념공원과 유엔군 묘지, 평택 해군기지에 전시된 북괴 어뢰로 침몰당했던 천안함, 포항 학도 의용군 전승기념관, 지평리 전투지, 다부동 전투장, 인천상륙작전 현장, 동두천-의정부 전투지, 포천-춘천-홍천-현리-횡성-가평-오산-전주-임실-남원-영덕-포항-안동 전투장과 충주 수안보 전투지 등을 찾아보았다. 자유 통일이 되면 제일 먼저가 보고 싶은 곳이 있다. 장진호와 흥남부두.
  
  ‘장진호’는 당시 17일간 계속된 전투에서 미군 1300여 명이 중공군 공격으로 목숨을 잃거나 동사(凍死)를 한 곳이다.‘흥남부두’는 1950년 12월 15일부터 12월 26일까지 미군 10군단, 대한민국 1군단, 난민 10만 명이 이곳에서 미군 상륙함 ‘메러디스 빅토리호’로 철수했던 곳이다.
  
  악의 뿌리인 공산주의 원흉(元兇), 구소련(러시아-푸틴)과 중공(시진펑)은 물론 그 독버섯이었던 체코슬로바키아, 루마니아, 베트남, 헝가리, 동독, 폴란드 등은 6·25 때 우리나라를 침략한 북괴(北傀) 집단을 지원했다. 물론 오늘날은 다르지만, 역사적 사실만은 함께 기억해 둘 필요가 있다. 지금 만약 한반도에 전쟁이 발발하면 그들은 어느 편에 설지 아무도 모른다(**100% 확실한 건 푸틴과 시진펑). 어느 쪽에 서든, 내 나라는 내가 지킨다는 이스라엘처럼. 튼튼한 경제력과 국방력 그리고 임전무퇴(臨戰無退)의 상무(尙武) 정신만이 답이다.
  
  창피한 얘기지만, 한국엔 아직 노예근성이 만연하다. ‘아무리 나쁜 평화도 전쟁보다 낫다’는 등 무조건 평화주의자가 의외로 많다. 과연 그럴까. 우남(雩南-이승만)은 말했다. “무조건 평화주의자는 공산주의자와 같다.”아인슈타인도 말했다. “나는 평화주의자일 뿐 아니라 전투적 평화주의자이기도 하므로 평화를 위해서 기꺼이 싸울 것이다.”아인슈타인은 싸우지 않고 얻는 평화는 공동묘지의 평화요 지옥의 평화임을 잘 알고 있었다. 자유는 공짜가 아니란 뜻이다.
  
  나에겐 습관처럼 굳어진 어법(語法)이 하나 있다. “우리 한국인은 당신의 나라가 우리가 어려울 때 크게 도와준 것을 잊지 않고 있습니다. 한국인의 내일을 위해서 당신의 오늘을 기꺼이 희생하심을 잘 알고 있습니다. 다시 한번 감사드립니다.”이는 내가 세계 여행 중 식당, 카페, 수영장 등 어디서든 외국인과 대화를 나누다 그들의 국적이 밝혀지면 내가 반드시 표현하는 말이다. 그런데 그들의 반응이 나를 더욱 난처하게 만들기 일쑤였다. “오히려 제가 더 고맙습니다. 잊지 않고 기억해 주셔서....”
  
  大韓民國은 2022년 6월 21, 순수 국내 기술로 제작된 한국형 최초의 우주 발사체 '누리호'를 발사 성공했다. 이로써 우리나라는 세계 7번째로 실용 위성을 확보한 우주 강국 중 하나가 됐다. 2024년 현재 전쟁 중인 우크라이나를 포함 폴란드, 루마니아, 핀란드, 이라크, 태국, 필리핀, 노르웨이, 에스토니아, UAE, 인도, 폴란드, 터키 등 여러 나라에 우리가 생산하고 수출하는 첨단 군사 무기와 장비가 있다. 오늘의 자랑스러운 자유대한민국을 있게 해준 6.25 참전국의 희생과 의료. 병참 지원국에 다시 한번 고마움을 전하고 싶다.

  What I’m thinking of 10 - Korean War & my promise. Attention-Salute-Thank you.
  
  I question kids about their future dreams, and adults about their previous dreams. Whether they are youngsters or adults, some people respond silently to this question, while others excitedly convey their dreams with glowing eyes. A few days ago, I spoke with a young Japanese man in his early thirties in the lobby of the Sapporo Hotel where we were staying. He was an office worker. He spoke English fluently. In the middle of our chat, I questioned him about his boyhood dream. He was taken aback by my surprise inquiry, but he eventually asked me the same question. I responded without hesitation.
  
  My boyhood desire was to tour the world, with one of the aims being to visit and thank the 22 nations that took part in the Korean War (the invasion of N. Korea in 1950) and provided significant logistical and medical support. He inclined his head, as if he had received an unexpected response from me, and wanted to learn more about my story. I immediately told him the following.
  
  A promise! In particular, the pledge to me was crucial! It was to visit nations that aided Korea throughout its crisis. On June 25, 1950, around 4 a.m., N. Korean leader Kim Il-sung invaded S. Korea with Mao and Stalin. At the moment, 16 UN members, led by the United States, hurried to S. Korea. They fought with Korean army and protected S. Korea. There were a lot sacrifices. I visited their nations one by one, commemorating their sacrifices. I saluted and thanked them wholeheartedly in front of the war memorial.

  Of course, I did throughout my military duty, and after being discharged, I traveled to as many sites as possible where the Korean War was occurring. Of course, I paid tribute to their loyalty. I don't believe there would be a prosperous free Republic of Korea without them. Right, it would have been difficult for me to freely enjoy backpacking throughout the globe without restrictions, as I had always dreamed about when I was younger. Even if I existed, I would be treated worse than animals in the Kim Ilsong hereditary system hell, the world's worst communist organization.
  
  I’ve visited Dongjak National Cemetery, Daejeon National Cemetery, Yongsan War Memorial Hall, Busan UN Memorial Park and UNs Cemetery, Pohang Student Soldier Memorial Hall, Jipyeong-ri Battlefield, Incheon Landing Operation Site, Pocheon-Chuncheon-Hongcheon Battle Hall. There are two places I want to go see first when the Republic of Korea reunifies. *Heungnam Pier and *the Jangjin Lake battlefield.
  
  *‘Heungnam Pier’ is the place where 100,000 refugees, including U.S. and Korean troops, were withdrawn from here by the U.S. landing ship ‘Meredith Victory’ from December 15 to December 26, 1950.
  
  *"Jang Jin-ho" is the place where 1,300 U.S. soldiers were killed or frozen in an attack by Chinese communist forces in a 17-day battle at the time.
  
  The communist Soviet Union (Russia) and China, the root of evil, as well as Czechoslovakia, Romania, Vietnam, Hungary, East Germany, and Poland, supported the N. Korean government that invaded Korea during the Korean War. Of course it’s different today but the historical facts should not be forgotten. Even now, no one knows which side they will stand on if a war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula again. It doesn't matter which way they stand. Just like Israel's spirit of protecting his country with his own power, we need to strengthen our strong economic and defense forces and the spirit of bravely fighting.
  
  Shamefully, slave temperament is still prevalent in Koreans. There are surprisingly many unconditionally pacifists, such as "No matter how bad peace is better than war." Is that true? Syngman Rhee, the founding president, said. "Unconditional pacifists are like communists." Einstein also said. "I am not only a pacifist but also a militant pacifist, so I am willing to fight for peace." Einstein was well aware that peace gained without fighting was peace in the cemetery and peace in hell. Bismarck used a more grave expression: "Freedom and peace can only be achieved by iron and blood, not by dialogue." Simply said, freedom is not free.
  
  I have a phrase that I use as a habit. "We will never forget how much your country supported us while we were in distress. YOU sacrificed today for Koreans tomorrow. "Thank you again." This term is what I use depending on their nationality when I meet and chat to foreigners in places like restaurants, cafés, swimming pools, and so on throughout my travel across the world. But you know what? Their reactions frequently humiliate me much more. "I'm more grateful that you say that to me."
  
  On June 21, 2022, South Korea successfully launched the first Korean-style space launch vehicle, Nuri, made entirely of domestic technology. With this, South Korea has become one of the world's seventh space powerhouses to secure practical satellites. As of 2024, South Korea possesses superior military weaponry and equipment that it produces and exports to a number of nations, including the war-torn Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Finland, Iraq, Thailand, the Philippines, Norway, Estonia, the UAE, India, and Turkey. I sincerely thank the UN War veterans for their sacrifices and medical treatment, which allowed us to have a proud free Republic of Korea today. *These advancements demonstrate that Korea's military sector is competitive in the global market. *Long live Korea!!!
