나는 1983년부터 오늘날까지 수없이 많은 세계 배낭여행을 했다. 직장 생활 중 기회만 나면 떠났다. 약 절반은 단독(單獨) 배낭여행이었다. 실제론 단독이 아니었다. 한국을 떠날 땐 혼자여도 목적지에 도착하면 항상 다른 나라에서 온 누군가와 함께 숙식(宿食)하고 이동(移動)을 했기 때문이다(* 짧게는 2~3일, 길게는 일주일 이상). 대화는 필수 중 필수. 이런 기회를 많이 가지면 가질수록 국가(國家)의 중요성을 느꼈다. 저절로 애국자가 되고 국가주의자(國家主義者)가 됐다. 오늘은 일본인들과 함께했을 때의 얘기다.
  
  1996년, 일본인 세 명(30대 둘, 40대 하나)과 인도(印度) 안다만섬에서 열흘을 함께 했다(콜카타에서 배로 3박 4일 소요). 당시만 해도 안다만섬엔 외국 여행자들이 많지 않았다. 더더욱 동양인은 드물었다. 이들의 특징 중 하나는 정보지(세계를 간다)는 물론 독서용 책도 지참한다는 것. 하루는 이들이 읽다가 그냥 침대에 두고 나간 책을 보게 됐다. 궁금해서 펼쳐보니 일본 근대사, 일종의 역사부도(歷史附圖)였다. 일본이 지배했던 주요 국가와 함께 연도별로 일목요연하게 기록돼 있었다. 정신이 번쩍 들었다. 이들은 자기 나라가 한때 지배했던 나라들을 답사(踏査)하고 있었다. 부러웠다. 강대국(強大國) 후손만이 누릴 수 있는 그들만의 자부심이. 물론 안다만섬에도 일제 시대에 그들의 부모세대가 남겨놓은 군사시설(軍事施設)과 건물들이 있었다.
  
  일본의 점령지. 그들이 식민 지배했던 주요 국가와 연도는 다음과 같다:
  
  대만(1895-1945), 조선(1910-1945), 사이판(1914-1944), 만주(1931-1945), 중국(1937-1945), 베트남(1940-1945), 괌(1941-1944), 필리핀(1942-1945), 말레이시아(1941-1945), 싱가포르(1941-1945), 인도네시아(1942-1945), 미얀마(1942-1945), 파푸아뉴기니(1942-1945), 솔로몬 제도(1942-1945), 마셜 제도(1914-1944), 마리아나 제도(1914-1944), 팔라우(1914-1944), 뉴기니(1942-1944) 등.
  
  이는 지구촌 곳곳에 남아 있는 지울 수 없는 일본 역사의 흔적이다. 나는 일본인 친구들과 함께하며 그들의 조상(祖上)이 남겨놓은 굵직굵직한 힘의 실체를 봤다. 이곳 일본 삿포로에서도 마찬가지다. 이들과 대화를 나눠봐도 그렇고, 이들의 삶의 모습 하나하나를 봐도 그렇다. 어딜 봐도 약자(弱者)의 모습, 피해자(被害者)의 모습은 보이지 않았다. 있어도 그런 티를 내지 않았다. 원폭(原爆)을 두 번이나 맞고 폭망을 했는데도. 피해 보상을 하라는 등….적어도 겉으론 그렇게 보였다. 그런 나라들은 한둘이 아니다.
  
  오늘날의 이스라엘도<독일로부터>, 그리스도<터키로부터>, 러시아도<몽골과 폴란드로부터>, 폴란드도<러시아로부터>, 베트남도<중국으로부터>, 중국도<일본으로부터>, 인도도<영국으로부터> 등, 한때 그들은 짧게는 수십 년, 길게는 수백 년을 지배받았다. 강대강(强對强)의 속성이랄까 혹은 강자(強者)의 진정한 자존심이랄까. 결코, 피해자(被害者) 임을 나타내지 않는다. 진짜 강자는 파괴(破壞)될 수는 있지만 패배(敗北)할 수는 없기 때문일 것이다. 그래서 내 나라도 진짜 강대국(強大國)이 한 번 되어 봤으면 소원이 없겠다.

  People met on my backpacking 124 - the pride of a great power
  
  From 1983 until the present, I went on various backpacking trips across the world. Approximately half were solo travelers. In truth, I was not alone. Though I left Korea alone, I always stayed with someone from another nation when I arrived (*at least two to three days, but no more than one week). Conversation is critical. The more opportunities I had, the more I appreciated the worth of my country. I instantly became a patriot. What I'm talking about today is Japanese people.
  
  In 1996, I spent ten days with three Japanese backpackers in Andaman Island, India (a three-night, four-day boat trip from Kolkata). One of their distinguishing traits was that they carried along a large number of reading books. One day, I found a book they were reading. It was about modern Japanese history. It was the main countries controlled by Japan. They explored nations that Japan formerly ruled. I saw their own pride, which only offspring of great powers could have. Of course, Andaman Island has military facilities and structures left by their parents' generation.
  
  Japan controlled the following countries and years: Taiwan (1895-1945), Joseon (1910-1945), Saipan (1914-1944), Manchuria (1931-1945), China (1937-1945), Vietnam (1940-1945), Guam (1941-1944), the Philippines (1942-1945), Malaysia (1941-1945), Singapore (1941-1945), Indonesia (1942-1945), Myanmar (1942-1945), Papua New Guinea (1942-1945), Solomon Islands (1942-1945), Marshall Islands (1914-1944), Palau (1914-1944), New Guinea (1942-1944), and more.
  
  This is one of many experiences I've had while with the Japanese and saw the reality of their ancestors' power. The same is true in Sapporo, Japan. I feel the same way when I speak with Japanese people and witness their daily life. I couldn't see the weak among them. The USA bombed them twice, destroying them utterly. However, they did not demand that to compensate for the damage. There are several countries like that.
  
  Not only Israel today, but also many other countries. Greece, Russia, Mongolia, Poland, Vietnam, China, India, etc. were once ruled for decades at the most, and hundreds of years at the most. This may be the true pride of a great power. A strong person never indicates a victim. It may be because a real strong person can be destroyed but cannot be defeated. This is why I prefer a great power.
