The Two Faces of Hollywood in L.A

Backpackers like visiting guesthouses (Tomitori) all around the world. It's a totally fresh and free-spirited environment. People all across the world like traveling, including the elderly like myself. The majority of them are strong-willed young guys.

There is no distinction between wealthy and poor, no racism or religious conflict here. No one even asks about it. All they need to do is speak with one another. Then they can become friends and travel partners for the following place. Of course, they share their ideas and opinions on the newest travel news, the world situation, and their own governments and economies. Everyone becomes a private diplomat, taking the lead in boasting and appealing for their nation. Everybody instinctively becomes a patriot.

The same applies for my Brazilian acquaintance, whom I met this time. Although he was not a traveler, he enjoyed interacting with people from all over the world, therefore he picked a guesthouse. I've seen several examples like this. Oslo, Norway; Sydney, Paris, and Singapore, among others. In other words, they were despatched from their employment, came here on purpose to study English, and stayed during their working holidays.

Case 3: My Brazilian buddy wanted to show me as much as possible. It was normally a spot that tourists would not visit. He stated that it would be beneficial to visit the United States, which is nasty and dangerous like any other country. It was a group of homeless individuals. It was not in a typical Koreatown or near a bus stop. It was located in West Hollywood, which was outside of Central Los Angeles. We visited here at night. It was so scary that we viewed it while driving slowly with the vehicle door locked. It was both thrilling and nerve-racking.

We passed it by at 8 p.m. It seemed like a lawless zone. People were lying down on the sidewalk with mats, newspapers, or clutter spread out, shouting with bottles of liquor in their hands, their crazy eyes as if they were about to rush at the car we were in, men and women idling everywhere, and the smoke they spewed. This was exactly what my friend stated.

In comparison, the homeless population in Los Angeles was much inferior to anything I had seen before. I am referring to Seoul Station, Yeongdeungpo Station, Jongno Subway Station, Ueno Park (Yoyogi Park, Shinagawa Park in Tokyo), as well as Kolkata and Mumbai, India. Because I mean their eyes were still active.

If there is a sunny spot, there is also a gloomy place. A person who has only seen one side and another who has seen both sides cannot have the same perspective on life and the world. I believe he was attempting to tell me that. He came from a slum in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This location remains in the press as 'Fabella', which is still infamous. I went there in 1997 and 2010. There are many gloomy and depressing locations in the world. I was fortunate to meet nice friends through global travel and visited many locations that others have not. Needless to say, thanks to a successful Korean passport.

The saying goes, "No pain, no gain. Better when young." If we didn't have a hard time when younger, I believe it's still ok when we are older. That manner, we may achieve equilibrium in our lives. Polar opposites exist in Hollywood, as they do everywhere. On one side stands the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The names of 3,000 eternal stars who have touched people's hearts through the screen since the 1960s are vividly imprinted on the floor, each with a huge star. However, on the opposite street, no one is paying attention. If I had only seen the latter, I would have undoubtedly accused the United States of 'Hell America'.

  Thanks for reading.
