What I¡¯m thinking about(30) - the effect of English on my life

Today's topic is around my friendship with an American. In 1985, I applied to the Morehead State University. Finally, I received an acceptance letter (I-20) from the school and came to the United States. First, I landed in Los Angeles, then went to a relative's house in Rialto. As soon as I got in Rialto, I contacted my friend in Cincinnati and agreed to meet up shortly. The next day, after we spoke on the phone, I received a heartbreaking notice from his aunt. He perished in an automobile accident. "No, no, no way!!!!" It was a huge shock to me.

At that time, I majored in English literature at K University in Seoul and was also a master of English literature at H University Graduate School in Seoul. At the same time, I worked as an assistant at S University in Seoul. At this university, I gave lectures on Korean, especially the Gyeongsang dialect, to American professors and employees of the U.S. Embassy. As a result, I was able to visit the residence of the staff of the U.S. Embassy and the compound of the Eighth Army in Yongsan several times. What they had in common was the "America's mainland in Korea." Both are gone now, of course. *I still remember that time when I go to Gwanghwamun and Yongsan.).

The roadways of Yongsan Garrison were quite lengthy. I felt as if I were in a metropolis in the USA, with newspaper stands, fast food restaurants, theaters, restaurants, discos, golf courses, BBQ parties, kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools, and universities. Actually, I found out later, that the looks at embassies in other nations, including Korea, was similar. (*After being relocated to Pyeongtaek, Yongsan Garrison was available to the public in 2018. Of course, I have been there. What I sensed was, in a word, a vast area of death. In the late 1970s, when I went numerous times, it was a vibrant and active living people environment.

A story about an employee's private house at the US Embassy in Seoul. Americans enjoy talking. Many parties are held for a variety of reasons, including food. One day, he asked me to his private apartment, promising to show me a beautiful scene. Another employee had recorded camera footage inside an elementary school in central Beijing. In short, the children there resembled those in N. Korea. Downtown Beijing had the impression of a massive refugee camp. (*Deung So-pyeong launched actually capitalism in 1979, claiming, "There is no need for socialism to starve to death," but nothing has changed five years later.)

I visited Cincinnati, his hometown. There were two of his aunts. When I got to his aunts' house, I noticed they had a doll in the living room dressed in traditional Korean clothing that I had previously sent them. They had raised their nephew, who had lost both of his parents at a young age, until he reached adulthood. He dropped at his aunts' residence in Cincinnati before relocating to Nepal, his next destination after working in Korea. After finishing his last work in Nepal, he was preparing to return to his hometown of Cincinnati. This is why he invited me to a university in near Ohio. But I found that it is none of our concern but in heaven.

I believed that the distinction between life and death was dim. He departed the globe in an instant...!!! I reflected deeply. I decided to travel. Rather than sit back and read more books, I opted to explore more of the globe on foot. First, I traveled across the USA. I went to Yale College, where my instructor attended, Princeton College, where Pres. Syngman Rhee attended, and UC Berkeley, where my nephew attended. The excitement and fulfillment I got when I visited a location that had sparked my interest for a long time outweighed reading a book tenfold. To me, there are lots of topics to discuss that are accessible to everyone. My option was right. It was a good investment in my life. The seed money was in English, namely spoken English. That's why I still enjoy, adore, and value English.

Thanks for reading
