What I¡¯m thinking about(32) - People who desire to see the wider globe.

I thoroughly read CHOGAPJE.COM's "Do you know a deep regret not having received an education" article. At the same time, I reflected on my own experience teaching and witnessing them.

In the mid-1980s, I chose to take a trip to the United States rather than study there, and I went home after a year abroad. I taught English in a big Korean foreign language institute in Jongno 2-ga, Seoul. I taught TOEFL and TOEIC. I also taught a basic English lesson for adults. The adult class consisted of ladies in their fifties or older. They lacked fundamental understanding of English. They lived in terrible grief since they had missed out on the opportunity to learn.

First, poverty prevented them from attending school. These individuals shared something in common. They were socially successful despite their lack of education. Regardless of how rich their lives were, they had an inward sense of poverty that they did not want others to perceive. The more they attempted to disguise it, the more guilty they felt.

They also shared the fact that they lacked basic English knowledge. They were unfamiliar with the words, which appears frequently in the English grammar explanation such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and so on. After becoming adult, everyone needed a basic understanding of grammar in order to learn a foreign language. So I attempted to make sure they grasped the specific grammar names. Of course, the method was not simple. Luckily neither I nor they gave up and completed the basic course.

They eventually got enough confidence to use English dictionaries on their own, read English names and people's names on advertisements, write their own names in Roman characters, and read English movie titles and music songs on their own.

In general, when people married in Korea in the 1960s and 1970s, education was not considered vital, particularly for women. However, as the country's economy grew, so did all levels of cultural living. At the same time, the quality of schooling improved. It evolved into a knowledge-based civilization rich in information. Their discussions with their children became further apart. They gathered their confidence and went to the English academy. Within a few days, they had become good friends. There was nothing to conceal from one another, nothing to be embarrassed of, and nothing to damage their dignity.

*I believe that the talents required to live in the world are the most difficult to master. It mixes theory with practice. For a human, I believe that learning survival skills with one's entire body in life is just as vital as learning from books. In any case, a biased state will have a negative impact on quality of life.

In my opinion, no matter how much worldly wealth we have, a society with many individuals suffering from mental poverty, or deep regrets about things we haven't learned, can never be healthy or joyful. As a result, I believe it is an excellent study to absorb wisdom from those who have studied less yet are appreciative and live happily.

  Thanks for reading.
