People met on my backpacking(229) - Conversations with foreigners are always fun

Yesterday, I boarded a village bus with a buddy in Sinchon. Just before the bus left, two Westerners boarded. It was a young male around 20 years old and a woman in her mid-40s. A woman sat in the unoccupied seat, while a young man stood next to it. He was tall enough to reach the roof of the bus. There appeared to be an age gap between the two. They also looked similar. I guessed they were a mother and a son. What sparked my interest was that while I had seen many foreigners on the subway, I had never seen any Westerners on a small village bus. Curiosities struck me all at once.

*Mom(M), Son(S), and I.

I: Hi? May I speak with you for a moment? I live in Seoul and like traveling throughout the world. You two also travelers?

M: Yes. We are now wandering throughout Seoul.

I: Oh I see. Welcome to Korea. I love traveling, too. It's great, amazing. Where are you from?

M: We are from Sweden.

(*Her kid, who had been motionless, suddenly spoke.)

S: You say you travel a lot; have you ever gone to Africa?

I: Of certainly. Except for Western Africa, I have visited practically every other nation in Africa.

S: What was the greatest part? Actually, we truly want to go there, but we lack the necessary bravery. Isn't it very dangerous?

I: Of course it is not so safe. I've also faced perils like as pickpockets and frauds in Nairobi Kenya, Kampala Uganda, Arusa Tanzania, and Casablanca Morocco. But I don't believe you should be overly worried. It's definitely worth a visit.

I've been to northern Europe numerous times, including Sweden, and it's an excellent place.

S: No. That happened a long time ago. It is very different now. It's extremely crazy.

I: Really? What has changed so significantly?

S: There are too many immigrants. There have been many violent incidents and illegal protests, and the mood is rather intense.

M: That's true. Europe undoubtedly changed in recent years. It has changed tremendously. The problem is that it has changed in a bad manner.

I: Don't you believe the US has a more challenging immigration system? Anyway, what do you watch in Korea?

(*At that point, the son reappeared.)

S: We're heading to the agriculture and fishing market near to the Mapo World Cup Stadium.

(*I asked him again after getting an entirely unexpected response.)

I: I've seen a lot of foreign tourists at the World Cup Stadium, but I've never seen anyone standing at the surrounding agricultural and seafood markets. Do you have a special reason for going there?

S: Yes. My mother and I enjoy seafood. Actually, we're going to explore the Korean fish market and eat a lot of fish.

M: He's correct. I enjoy fish since I was born and raised in Nusepping, a seaside city in southern Sweden.

I: Oh, I see. I totally get it. My hometown is Busan, a port city in southern Korea. So, just like you, I enjoy many types of seafood, too.

S: Oh, seriously? Then kindly provide some details about Busan. We are heading to Jagalchi Market in Busan. I saw it online.

M: That's correct. The next stop is Busan. We visited the Noryangjin Fish Market yesterday. It was great. We looked about the all kinds of fish and ate lunch there.

I: Really? You really enjoy fish. What sort of fish do you normally prefer?

M: I eat enough of salmon and lobster, but not in Korea. I eat them frequently in Swenden. Instead, I had mackerel and flatfish.

I: Really? How did you consume it? Raw fish? Sushi? Stew? Grilled fish?

M: We had mackerel as grilled fish and flatfish as stew, which was delicious.

(Another inquiry, her son asked.)

S: How much does lunch cost in Seoul?

I: Of course, it varies by area, but it costs around 12,000 won. Maybe 10 euros should enough.

S: I see. Is Japan comparable to Korea? We will go immediately to Japan after our vacation to Busan.

I: I think that's a great idea. My wife and I went to Sapporo in May. Japan is also a nice destination. Of course, there are many different dishes, such as sushi. Anyway, I believe the food pricing is comparable to that of Korea. However, regardless of the transportation price, Korea is less expensive and offers greater value than Europe, USA, and Japan. In my view, subways are the cleanest, safest, and most cost-effective modes of transportation in the world. Anyway, Korea offers inexpensive transportation and decent security wherever you go, so enjoy as much as you can with confidence. It will be a memorable experience if you use the bus that locals now utilize to visit traditional markets. Of course there're lots of fish too. Try talking with Koreans right now. Just like now we're doing so. It's both entertaining and instructive. Actually, it is my worldwide travel style.

*Her kid checked often his smartphone like many young men do these days. He would constantly check his mobilephone. They saw, ate, and enjoyed what they really wanted without restriction. I advised that they visit Jagalchi Market, Yeongdo Bridge, and Yongdusan Park while in Busan. Told them that the park is associated with the Republic of Korea's founder, Pres. Syngman Rhee. I also urged them to visit the famed Haeundae Beach. I boasted a lot about Busan, where I was born.

*Another thing that jumped out to them was the fact that, unlike other visitors, they saw the life of locals while riding village buses rather than cabs. In my experience, this is not an easy task in new nations. For starters, there are issues with both language and security. I believe they will also tell others about their interactions with natives while traveling abroad, like I did. "Korea is a safe and caring place. Some folks speak English well.", etc.

I inquired whether he could read Korean. After saying no, he paused for a bit before asking me another question. "What distinguishes Korean and Chinese cultures, as well as Chinese and Korean Chuseok?" *This is why I enjoy talking to Westerners. They like asking and answering questions, just like me. *Today's story is about a discussion between a Swedish woman and her kid during a fifteen-minute minibus ride.

Thanks for reading..
