경험에 의하면, 혼자든 둘이든 가이드 없이 세계 여행을 할 때 가장 문제가 되는 것은 언어, 즉 영어다. 물론 영어를 안 하든 못 하든 영어에 별로 구애받지 않고 먹을 것 다 먹고, 볼 것 다 보고, 갈 곳 다 가는 사람들도 더러 봤다. 그것도 큰 능력이라고 생각했다. 웬만한 건 모른 체하고 속아주고 그로 인해 어느 정도 피해를 봐도(물적이든 심적이든) 담담히 받아들일 아량과 배포(排鋪)를 지닌 사람들이었다.
  
  문제는 다수의 그렇지 못한 사람들이었다. 경험에 의하면 대부분이 그랬다. 여행 중에 영어가 안돼 실제로 피해를 본 사람들이었다. 주로 한국인과 일본인들. 이들의 공통점은 영어를 읽고 쓸 줄은 알아도 말을 못 한다는 것. 시시비비(是是非非)를 따져 줄 건 주고, 받을 건 받아야 하는데 그게 안 돼 억울하게 당하기만 한 사람들이었다. 나는 내가 할 수 있는 한 그들을 도왔다. 물론 나도 피해를 본 적이 많다. (*이는 직접 경험해 봐야 실감함. 외지(外地)에서 장거리 기차나 버스로 이동할 때 가능한 한 같은 여행자끼리 함께 하는 것이 안전함).
  
  전자(前者)는 자신이 영어를 못해서 피해를 봤다면, 나는 아이러니하게도 정반대다. 대부분 내가 먼저 말을 걸어서 발생한 불상사(不祥事)였기 때문이다. 그들을 믿고 그들이 제안하는 대로 따러 갔다거나, 음식을 함께 먹었다거나 등등. 암튼, 나 자신이 겪은 사건·사고와 남(한국인, 일본인)의 문제를 해결한 유일한 수단은 영어 소통력이었다. 피해자 입장에서 상대에게 자초지종(自初至終)을 차분히 설명하면 거의 다 해결됐다. 사과(謝過)도 받고, 보상(補償)도 받고, 가끔은 상대로부터 기대 이상의 도움을 받기도 했다.
  
  이처럼 외국에서의 소통 수단인 영어의 힘은 대단하다. 말로 하는 영어와 글로 써서 하는 영어, 어느 쪽이 더 실용적일까? 단언컨대 약 99%는 전자다. 그렇다고 후자(後者)의 효력은 없느냐? 아니다. 엄청나다. 말로 해서 안된다 싶을 때, 메모지를 달라 하여 거기에 글을 써서 내놓으면 즉각 반응했다. 효과 100%!! 그러나 다시 강조하지만, 빈도수(頻度數)로 보면 겨우 1% 내외에 불과하다. 물론 둘 다 준비해 두면 금상첨화(錦上添花).
  
  다음은 영어를 말과 글로 문제를 해결한 사례다. 또한, 영어 덕택에 위기 상황에서 도움을 받거나 시간과 경비를 절약할 수 있었던 경우다
  
  *말로 문제를 해결한 사례들:
  
  1. 로마 책방에서-(책방 주인이 한국인 관광객에게 책을 팔고 잔돈을 안 준 경우. 한국인 부부는 책방 주인에게 삿대질하고 고함을 쳤지만 무용지물. 내가 경찰을 데려오겠다고 하니 고분고분 잔돈을 내줌.)
  
  2. 인도 델리 게스트하우스에서-(같은 숙소에 있던 일본인 여행자가 숙소비 바가지를 썼다며 나에게 해결할 방법을 물었을 때. 내가 주인에게 말했다. 일본인은 악덕 업소를 글로 고발한다. 일본인 친구가 가지고 있던 세계를 간다를 보여주며 부당한 요금을 받았으면 되돌려 주라고 했다. 주인은 순수히 내 제안을 받아들였다. 당시엔 인터넷이 없던 시대.)
  
  3. 브라질 상파울루 구아룰류스 국제공항에서-(폭우로 인한 차질로 비행기가 뜨지 못하고 있을 때, 항공사 직원에게 갔다. 우리의 여정에 차질이 생겼으니 중간 지점인 리오그란데 공항 스톱오버를 취소하고 바로 우리의 최종 목적지인 우수아이아 공항으로 가는 비행기로 바꿔 달라고 요구했고, 그는 허용했다. 덕택에 숙소와 투어 예약 등 피해를 막을 수 있었다. *천재지변은 항공사 책임이 아니므로 그들이 안 된다고 하면 어쩔 도리가 없음.)
  
  4. 이집트 아스완 숙소에서-(일본인 3명이 숙소에서 람세스 2세 신전 투어 신청을 했는데 너무 바가지 썼다며 도움을 요청했을 때. 주인은 완강히 거절. 결국, 설득시켜 부당요금 받아 줌. 일본인은 면전에서 시시비비를 따지거나 큰소리로 호통치지 않지만 꼭 글로 기록을 남긴다. 이를 잘 알고 있는 업주들은 섣불리 일본인들을 건들지 않는다.)
  
  5. 호주 시드니 킹스트리트 게스트하우스에서-(한국인 알바생이 야간 업소에서 청소하던 중 유리 항아리를 깼는데 그들이 요구한 비용이 터무니없다는 말을 들었을 때. 내가 그 물건의 값을 조회해서 그 가격을 제시함으로써 문제 해결.)
  
  6. 네팔 국경선에서-(네팔 포카라 여행사에서 인도 바라나시까지 가는 버스티켓을 구매해 국경에 도착. 인도측 버스회사 직원이 내가 보여준 버스티켓은 무효라며 추가 요금을 내라고 할 때, 당시 나 외에 한국인 2명, 일본인 등 모두 6명이 있었다. 우리 모두는 같은 버스티켓을 가지고 있었다. 결국 내가 따지고 따져 인도 직원을 물리 침.)
  
  7. 방콕 게스트하우스에서-(구동독 출신의 아들과 대화 중 자본주의 제도에 더 많은 문제가 있다는 말을 듣고 논쟁을 할 때. 당시 우리 부부와 그들 부부는 저녁 식사를 마친 뒤 함께 대화를 나눴다. 술을 마셔가면서 얘길 했는데 시간이 저녁 10시를 넘기자 두 아내는 방으로 먼저 들어감. 결과는 무승부. 그는 자기 아버지로부터 들은 구동독 생활에 대한 우월성을 가지고 있었음. 젊은 친구였음에도 한 번 주입된 특정 사상은 요지부동이었음.)
  
  8. 브라질 상파울루 시내에서-(점심 식사 후, 숙소 근처의 공원 산책을 마치고 돌아오는데 불량배로 보이는 젊은이 한 명이 내 옆에 바짝 붙어 내 스마트폰을 보여달라고 할 때. 내가 무반응을 보이자, 녀석이 내 옷을 잡는 등 위협을 줄 때, 마침 큰 상점 앞에 중년 신사들이 몇 명이 보여 그들에게 도움을 요청해 위기를 모면함. 이처럼 많은 비영어권 사람들도 영어로 말을 못해도 영어를 알아듣는 사람들은 어디에나 있음.)
  
  9. 미국 워싱턴 DC에서-(그레이하운드 고속버스로 노스케롤라이나에 갈 때다. 출발 전에 화장실을 이용할 때다. 배낭을 내 무릎 앞에 둔 상태에서 변기에 앉았다. 그때 갑자기 문 밑으로 큰 손이 쑥 들어오더니 내 배낭을 잡고 억센 힘으로 확 끌어당겼다. *미국 공중화장실 문 아래 공간은 꽤 넓다. 나는 꽉 잡고 놓아주지 않았다. 그 역시 포기하지 않았다. 그때 내가 말했다. 나는 가난한 배낭여행자이다. 내 가방엔 속옷과 양말 그리고 비상식품 빵밖에 없다. 그것을 원하면 줄 테니 기다려 달라. OK? 잠시 후 그는 내 배낭에서 손을 놓고 조용히 사라졌다. 문을 열고 나오니 화장실 내에는 아무도 없었다. 화장실 밖을 나와 터미널 내를 아무리 둘러봐도 내 배낭을 꽉 쥐고 있던 그런 큰 손을 가진 자는 안 보였다. 그러나 매우 긴장했었다. 버스가 출발한 이후에야 안심함.)
  
  10. 이집트 카이로에서-(카이로의 타흐리르 광장에 있던 이집트 국립 박물관이 현재의 카이로 남단의 피라미드 근처로 옮기기 전의 일이다. 나는 그곳에 전시된 이집트 제18왕조의 파라오였던 투탕카멘의 황금 마스크를 감상한 뒤 사진을 찍었다. 경비원이 다가오더니 내 카메라를 압수하겠다면 내놓으라고 했다. 난 그에게 최대한 변명을 해서 약간의 벌금으로 해결을 봄.)

  In my point of view, language is the most challenging part of traveling across the world without a guide. Of course, I encountered several non-English speakers who ate everything, saw everything, and traveled everywhere. I felt that was a fantastic skill, too. They had a secret. They feigned not to know the majority of the difficulties and were deceived. They were generous enough to tolerate some harm (whether physical or emotional).
  
  The trouble was that most people didn't. They were primarily Korean and Japanese. They were both able to read and write English but unable to talk. They were folks who were treated unfairly because they didn't speak English. I assisted them as much as I could. Of course, I've also sustained significant damage. (*This feels real in person. When traveling from overseas by long-distance rail or bus, it is better to share with the same traveler.
  
  If they were hurt because they didn't speak English, I was the exact opposite. In most situations, the incident happened because I spoke with someone beforehand. I believed them and went exactly where they recommended. I ate with them, etc. Anyway, the only way I could overcome these issues was through English conversation. It's practically resolved if I gently described the entire situation to the other person from the victim's perspective. They apologized, and sometimes the other person helped me more than I expected.
  
  As a result, the power of English as a method of communication in foreign nations is enormous. Which is more practical: spoken or written English? I'm confident that the former accounts for around 99% of the total. Of course, the latter has far-reaching consequences. I wrote it when words were ineffective. They instantly reacted. Effect is 100%!! But, again, the frequency is under 1%. Needless to say, both are quite useful if possible.
  
  The example below demonstrates how to solve difficulties in English using words and writing. In addition, because of my ability to communicate in English, I was able to seek help in times of difficulty while saving time and money.
  
  *Examples of solving problems in spoken English:
  
  1. In a Rome bookshop - (When a store owner sold books to a Korean visitor but failed to provide change. The Korean couple became enraged with the bookshop owner, but it was pointless. When I informed the owner I was going to summon the police, he handed them the change.)
  
  2. At a guesthouse in Delhi, India- (When a Japanese visitor staying at the same hostel sought me for assistance with his hotel charges, I informed the proprietor. The Japanese accuse him of lousy lodgings in writing. I showed him the trip guidebook that a Japanese buddy had. The owner just accepted my offer. Back then, there was no internet.)
  
  3. At Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil- (After my flight was grounded due to severe rain, I approached the airline's workers. I requested that he cancel the layover at Rio Grande Airport, which was the midway point, and instead fly directly to our final destination, Usuaia Airport. Then he agreed. This prevented harm such as hotel and tour bookings. (Genius catastrophes are not the airline's duty, so if they say no, I can't blame them.)
  
  4. At the hotel in Aswan, Egypt, (three Japanese people with me requested a tour to Ramses II's temple. However, they were taken advantage of. When I received their request, I protested to the owner. Finally, the owner returned the money to the Japanese. The Japanese never criticize or shout in other people's faces, but they always leave records in writing. Business owners that are aware of this are fearful of the Japanese.)
  
  5. At the King Street Guesthouse in Sydney, Australia - (A Korean part-timer smashed a glass jar while cleaning it at a night club and was informed the bill was exorbitant. I looked into the actual pricing of the item. And resolved the issue by providing the price to the restaurant.)
  
  6. At the Nepalese border - (I purchased a bus ticket from a travel agency in Pokhara, Nepal to Varanasi, India and arrived at the border. An Indian bus company representative informed me that the bus ticket I presented was invalid and that I needed to pay an extra cost. There were six persons there at the time, including two Koreans and three Japanese. We all held the same bus ticket. I eventually defeated the Indian staff member with my spoken English.)
  
  7. In a Bangkok guesthouse - (I spoke with a man from former East Germany. During our talk, I overheard him criticizing the capitalist system. We spoke over cocktails after dinner. The outcome was a draw. He had firmly felt that his father was correct. Even though he was a young man, some concepts that were pushed into his mind remained firm.)
  
  8. In downtown São Paulo, Brazil - (After lunch, I was walking back from a park near my hotel when a young man who looked to be a bully approached me and requested to see my smartphone. I had no reaction to him. When he threatened me by snatching my clothing, I avoided the situation by asking for assistance from middle-aged males in front of a huge store. There are so many English listeners everywhere, even if they don't speak English.
  
  9. In Washington, DC, USA - (When traveling to North Carolina using the Greyhound Express Bus from Washington, DC, I used the restroom before departing. Someone reached under the toilet's door and pulled my backpack. I held my backpack hard and refused to let go. He did not give up either. I said, "I am a poor backpacker. I just have underpants, socks, and emergency bread in my luggage. I will give it to you if you want it, so kindly wait. OK?" After a while, he dropped my backpack and vanished. When I opened the door, there was nobody in the restroom. I stepped out of the bathroom and looked around the station. But no one had that large hand gripping my rucksack forcefully. But I was quite nervous. I only felt glad once the bus had departed.
  
  10. IN CAIRO, Egypt- (The happening happened before the Egyptian National Museum in Cairo's Tahrir Square moved it near the pyramid at the southern tip of what is now Cairo. I took a picture after appreciating Tutankhamun's golden mask, a pharaoh of Egypt's 18th Dynasty who was shining with gold. A security guard approached me and told me to hand over my camera, saying he would confiscate it. I tried to excuse him as much as I could and solve it with a small fine.)
