26. 파키스탄 르왈핀디에서 - (오전 9시쯤 시내의 시티뱅크에 여행자 수표(T/C)를 환전(換錢)하러 갔다. 창구 직원이 대여섯 명 일하고 있었다. 환전 창구에 있는 직원에게 환전을 부탁했다. 그는 자기 일을 계속하면서 나에게 의자에 앉아 기다리라고 했다. 시간이 꽤 흘렀음에도 그 직원은 자기 일만 하고 있었다. 나를 잊은 듯했다. 다시 그에게 가서 얼마를 더 기다려야 하는지 물었다. 그는 날 쳐다보며 한 마디로 기다리라고만 했다. 기분이 나빴지만 그럴 만한 사정이 있겠거니 하고 다시 의자에 앉았다. 잠시 후 서구인 남자 한 명이 환전 창구에 가서 환전을 신청하니 바로 해주는 모습을 봤다. 내가 그에게 물었다. 내가 먼저 온 손님이 아니냐고. 그는 알고 있다며 또 나보고 기다리라고 했다. 내가 그에게 종이 한 장과 볼펜을 달라고 했다. 그는 바로 건네줬다. 나는 그 자리에서 종이에 글을 썼다.

  **효력은 즉각 나타났다. 그는 내 글을 읽은 후 바로 미안하다는 말과 함께 환전을 해 주었다.
  
  27. 불가리아 국경에서 - (터키 이스탄불에서 버스로 불가리아를 갈 때다. 버스엔 터키와 불가리아를 오가며 보따리 장사를 하는 사람들이 많았다. 주 종목은 카페트였다. 버스는 저녁 내내 달려 새벽 1시쯤 터키 국경을 간단히 넘고 곧 불가리아 국경에 도착했다. 불가리아 직원들이 두 명 나오더니 승객들 여권(旅券)을 다 걷었다. 그리고 버스 짐을 전수(全數) 조사한다며 모든 짐을 다 도로 위에 내놓으라고 했다. 그런데 장사꾼 대부분은 너무 차분했다. 대충 짐을 내려놓고 1불 지폐를 몇 장씩 거둬 버스 운전자에게 건넸다. 운전사가 약 50m에 거리에 있는 여권 관리 사무실을 다녀온 뒤 곧 이민국 관리가 나와서 짐들을 대충 훑어보고 갔다. 운전사가 그를 뒤따라 가더니 곧 여권을 한 다발 받아 쥐고 와서 이름을 불러 되돌려 줬다. 그런데 내 것이 없었다. 운전사에게 물었더니 그는 그냥 미소만 지으며 기다려보라고만 했다. 그때 옆의 장사꾼 한 명이 나에게 3달러만 주면 된다고 귀띔을 했다. 그게 사실이냐고 운전사에게 물었더니 그는 여전히 웃기만 할 뿐 그냥 기다려보라고만 했다. 마치 약속이나 한 듯 30여 명의 승객은 나 때문에 버스가 출발을 못 하고 있다는 것을 알면서도 아무 불평 없이 기다렸다. 운전사에게 다시 물었다. 내가 3달러를 주면 되냐고. 그는 역시 웃으며 고개를 끄덕였다. 나는 내가 직접 가서 주겠다고 한 뒤 그곳에 갔다. 직원 책상 위에는 몇 개의 여권이 놓여 있었다. 내가 그에게 물었다. 내 여권에 문제가 있냐고. 그는 아무 대꾸도 없이 돈 주기만 바라는 눈치였다. 또 한 번 물어도 같은 태도였다. 나는 그가 보는 앞에서 내 수첩을 꺼내 글을 썼다.
  
  **[수고하십니다. 나는 대한민국과 불가리아는 무비자협정 국가임을 알고 왔습니다. 내 여권에 아무 결함이 없는데도 입국을 지연(遲延)하는 것을 이해할 수 없습니다. 혹시 그사이 변경 상황이 있는지 내가 직접 大韓民國 영사관에 전화를 걸어 볼 수 있도록 전화를 잠깐 빌려주시면 고맙겠습니다. 감사합니다.]
  
  **그는 내 글을 읽고 잠깐 생각한 뒤 떨떠름한 표정을 지으며 내 여권을 내주었다. 내 여권을 손에 쥐고 버스에 올라오니 운전사와 승객들이 박수로 환영했다. 다시 버스를 달렸다. 아침 7시경 소피아에 도착했다.
  
  28. 크로아티아 자그레브에서 - (크로아티아를 떠나기 전 우리는 자그레브 기차역에서 점심을 먹었다. 꽤 큰 레스토랑이었다. 점심을 마치고 식당을 나온 뒤 나는 아직 물이 많이 남은 내 생수병을 식탁에 두고 나온 걸 알고 아내를 복도에 세워 둔 체 혼자 식당에 되돌아갔다. 그런데 불과 1~2분 사이에 그 식탁은 깨끗이 치워져 있었다. 내가 여직원에게 내 물병을 찾고 싶다고 하니 그녀는 퉁명스럽게 내 물병을 버렸다고 했다. 그리고 혼잣말로 구시렁구시렁 그리며 날 쳐다보고 섰다. 그 태도에 나도 화가 나서 한마디 했다. 내가 두고 간 물병을 찾으러 온 건 당연한 것 아닌가. 그런데 그렇게 불친절하게 대하는 이유가 뭐냐고. 그 직원은 더 큰 소리로 떠들었다. 다른 손님과 직원들도 놀랄 정도였다. 그때 밖에서 기다리고 있던 아내가 식당으로 들어와서 내가 화난 모습을 보고 그냥 가자고 내 팔을 끌어당겼다. 하지만, 나는 내 생각대로 했다. 내가 수첩에 글을 썼다.
  
  **[지배인님께. 나는 이 식당에서 식사를 마친 뒤 내 물병을 두고 갔습니다. 그것을 가지러 왔습니다. 그런데 직원이 화를 냈습니다. 나는 그 직원의 태도를 이해할 수 없습니다. 무엇이 문제인지 담당자의 해명을 듣고 싶습니다.]
  
  **이 쪽지를 받은 선임자로 보이는 중년 여인이 나에게 다가와서 미안하다고 했다.
  
  29. 로마 바티칸에서 - (우리가 바티칸 박물관에 입장할 때다. 방문객이 너무 많아 한 시간 이상을 기다린 뒤 검색대(檢索臺)에 도착했다. 스마트폰 등 모든 소지품을 다 꺼내놓고 검색대를 통과했다. 다시 내 소지품을 다 챙긴 뒤, 다음 장소로 가던 중 내가 스마트폰을 소쿠리에 두고 온 걸 알았다. 서둘러 그 장소로 갔지만, 사람들이 너무 많아서 그 소쿠리를 관리하는 직원에게 내 스마트폰을 두고 갔다는 말을 할 틈이 안 보였다. 아니 그에게 접근 자체가 불가능했다. 물론 주위를 둘러봐도 내 스마트폰은 보이지 않았다. 순간 별생각이 다 들었다. 불안했다. 중요 자료가 다 들어 있는데...막연히 기다릴 상황이 아니었다. 생각 끝에 내 수첩에 글을 썼다. 그리고 주변에 한가하게 보이는 직원에게 전했다.
  
  **[담당자님께; 나는 검색대를 통과한 뒤 내 스마트폰을 소쿠리에 두고 나왔음을 뒤늦게 알고 찾으러 왔습니다. 미안하지만 확인을 부탁합니다.]
  
  **그로부터 내 쪽지를 건네받은 담당자는 바로 자기 옆에 두고 있던 내 스마트폰을 꺼내 내게 보이며 내 것이 맞느냐고 물었다. 그렇다고 하니 그는 내 전화번호 등을 물은 뒤 되돌려 주었다. 역시 말보다 글이 더 효과적인 경우였다.
  
  30. 인도 콜카타에서 - (내가 인도 콜카타에 두 번째 간 이유 중 하나는 테레사 수녀님이 운영하는 사랑의 선교회에서 단 하루만이라도 봉사활동을 하고 싶어서였다. 숙소도 걸어서 10분 거리에 있는 곳을 잡았다. 첫날 아침 선교회에 가서 봉사자 신청을 했다. 대기자(待機者)가 너무 많아서 언제 차례가 올지 막연했다. <*약 90%는 서구인 젊은이들> 그곳은 항상 곧 죽어가는 수많은 병자(病者)와 고아(孤兒)와 뼈만 앙상히 남은 굶주린 빈민자(貧民者)들로 만원이었다. 실내 수용(收容)이 안 돼 교회 밖의 거리에 들것에 실린 상태로 대기 중인 중증(重症)의 걸인(乞人)들이 한둘이 아니었다. 귀국할 시간은 다가오고 내 순서가 올 가능성은 보이지 않고…언듯 생각이 떠올랐다. 수첩에 글을 써서 담당 수녀님에게 전했다.
  
  **[담당 수녀님에게, 나는 한국인입니다. 이곳 사랑의 선교회에서 단 하루만이라도 봉사할 기회를 갖고자 왔으나 대기자가 너무 많아서 나에게 그런 기회가 올 것 같지 않습니다. 단 몇 시간만이라도 좋으니 실내에서 봉사할 기회를 주시면 감사하겠습니다. 사실 나는 1981년 테레사 수녀님이 한국을 방문했을 때 명동 성당에서 그리고 서강대학교 메리홀에서 직접 뵌 적이 있으며 말씀도 들었습니다. 그때 다짐했지요. 언젠가 꼭 테레사 수녀님이 계시는 곳에 가서 잠깐이라도 봉사활동을 하겠다고. 기회를 주시면 감사하겠습니다.]
  
  **답은 ‘노’였다. 예외는 허용되지 않는다고 했다. 자원봉사를 거절당하긴 처음이었다. 그나마 글로 내 마음을 전달했기에 담당자의 답을 직접 들을 수가 있었다<*봉자사 외엔 내부 입장 불가>. 당시 1993년 테레사 수녀님은 살아 계셨다. 1997년 선종(善終).
  
  *이처럼 내 경험에 의하면 세계 여행 중 사용하는 언어도 일상생활(日常生活)과 마찬가지로 대부분이 글이 아닌 말이었다. 그래서 나는 지금도 여전히 손으로 쓰는 영어보다 입으로 말하는 영어의 중요성을 절실히 느끼고 있다. (*사실 많은 비영어권 외국인들은 영어를 읽고 쓸 줄은 모르지만, 전혀 개의치 않고, 문법에 맞든 안 맞든, 정확한 단어든 아니든, 할 말 다 하며 여행자들과 어울리기도 하고 때론 논쟁도 한다. 그리고 신기하게도 다 통한다. *근자감<근거없는 자신감>은 바로 이럴 때 필요한 것 같다!!!) *어쨌든 말이든 글이든 나는 세계인들과 대화를 많이 나눈 덕택에 남에게 들려줄 얘깃거리 또한 많다. 그래서 더 좋다. 큰 보람이기도 하다. <끝>

  26. In Rwalfindi, Pakistan - (At about 9 a.m., I went to a city bank to swap T/Cs. I asked the employees at the currency exchange desk to exchange the money. He kept performing his work and told me to sit down and wait. I waited a long time, but he was just doing his job. I asked him again how long I had to wait. He only instructed me to wait. After a time, a Western man approached the currency exchange counter and swapped the money with him right immediately. I asked him again. You don't swap my T/C. Why? He begged me to wait again. I asked him for paper and a pen. I jotted down a note on the spot.
  
  **[Dear President of City Bank, I am a client who trusts and often utilizes City Bank in Korea. Until recently, I had assumed that City Bank was the same as City Bank in Korea and any other nation. I thought it was courteous, swift, and safe. I believe this is not the situation here. There appears to be an issue with the first-come, first-served premise. [Thank you.] I placed this item in front of the employee.]
  
  **It took effect instantly. He apologized and swapped money instantly after reading my paper.
  
  27. From the Bulgarian border - (I arrived at the Bulgarian border at 1 a.m. via bus from Istanbul, Turkey. Two Bulgarian staffers came out and grabbed all of the passengers' passports. They then browsed through the bus's luggage and walked to the office. The driver followed him and quickly got a large number of passports. But mine wasn't there. I asked the driver, and he simply grinned and instructed me to wait. I went inside the office and requested for my passport. He didn't respond. I asked him. Is there an issue with my passport? He seemed to want me to pay him money with no response. When I questioned him again, he remained the same. I pulled out my note and scribbled something in front of him.
  
  **[To an official. I hear that South Korea and Bulgaria do not require visas. I don't understand the wait in entering the country, despite the fact that my passport is not damaged. I'd like it if you could give me your phone so I may contact the Korean embassy in person and check if anything has changed in the meantime. [Thank you.]
  
  **He read my reply and paused for a bit before handing back my passport with a dissatisfied look. When I stepped on the bus with my passport in hand, the driver and passengers greeted me with cheers. I ran the bus again. I arrived in Sofia, the capital, at approximately 7 a.m.
  
  28. In Zagreb, Croatia - (Prior to leaving Croatia, my wife and I had lunch at the Zagreb train station. It was a rather huge restaurant. After lunch, I realized I had left my water bottle on the table and went back to the restaurant alone, leaving my wife in the corridor. When I told the waitress I needed to find my water bottle, she just said she didn't know. I inquired what was wrong with her. She shouted loudly. Other customers and workers were astounded. My wife, who was waiting outside, entered the restaurant and saw me outraged, tugging my arm to go with her. I did what I thought. I scrawled in a notepad.
  
  **[Dear Manager. I forgot my water bottle after dining at this eatery. I arrived to take it up. But the crew became enraged. I don't get her attitude. I'd want to hear from the person in charge about the matter.]
  
  **A middle-aged woman who appeared to have gotten the message approached me and apologized.
  
  29. From the Vatican in Rome - (My wife and I visited the Vatican Museums. We had to wait more than an hour before reaching the checkpoint due to the large number of people. I pulled out my smartphone and all of my belongings and passed through the checkpoint. After collecting my belongings again, I realized I had left my smartphone in the basket on the way to the next location. I raced to the location, but there was no way for me to inform the personnel in charge of the basket that I had left my smartphone there due to the large crowd. Finally, I wrote in my a notebook. And I conveyed my message to the relaxed employees around me.
  
  **[Dear person in charge, I came to take up my smartphone I left after going through the checkpoint. Please check, very sorry for that.]
  
  **The guy in charge took out my smartphone, which was immediately next to him, examined it, and inquired whether it was mine. When he replied yes, he asked for my phone number and then returned it. Writing was actually more effective than talking.
  
  30. From Kolkata, India - (One of the reasons I returned to Kolkata, India, was to volunteer for at least one day at Mother Teresa's Missionary of Love. The lodging was also put up within a 10-minute walk. On the first morning, I went to the missionary and applied for volunteer positions. There were so many people waiting, I had no idea when my time would come. It was usually crowded with dying sick people, orphans, and starving impoverished people with nothing but bones. Due to a shortage of interior space, more than one extremely ill guy waited on a stretcher on the street outside the church. I did not have time. I composed a note and delivered to the nun in charge.
  
  **[Dear Sister in Charge, I'm Korean. I've come here to serve even for one day at the Missionary of Love, but there are so many people waiting that I doubt such an opportunity will come my way. Just a few hours would be ideal, therefore I would appreciate it if you could offer me the opportunity to serve indoors. In fact, when Mother Teresa visited Korea in 1981, I saw her in Myeongdong Cathedral and Mary Hall of Sogang University, and she told me that I should surely go there and volunteer for a time. I would be grateful if you could give me a chance.]
  
  **The response was "No." She stated that no exceptions are permitted. I could hear the answer in person since I expressed myself through writing. Mother Teresa was still alive in 1993, when I visited. She died in 1997.
  
  *In my experience, most ways of communication in human connections, such as daily living and even throughout international trip, are words spoken rather than handwritten. Anyway, whether it's words or writings, I've had talks with individuals all over the world, and there are many things I'd want to share with others. It is an excellent prize for me.
