미국과 일본 정상이 첫 화상 정상회담을 갖고 최근 북한의 잇따른 탄도미사일 시험 발사를 강력히 규탄했습니다. 양국은 북한 비핵화 문제와 관련해 긴밀한 공조를 유지하기로 합의하고, 미한일 3국 간 협력도 강조했습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.
  
  조 바이든 미국 대통령과 기시다 후미오 일본 총리는 21일 열린 첫 화상 정상회담에서 2주 사이에 네 차례나 이어진 북한의 탄도미사일 발사를 강하게 비난했습니다. 백악관은 이날 정상회담 후 보도자료를 통해 “두 정상은 유엔 안전보장이사회 결의 위반인 북한의 최근 탄도미사일 발사를 규탄했다”며, “한반도의 완전한 비핵화를 위해 두 정상은 한국과 보조를 맞춰 향후 북한 문제에 대한 긴밀한 공조를 유지하기로 합의했다”고 밝혔습니다.
  
  [백악관 보도자료]"The two leaders condemned the recent ballistic missile launches by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), which are in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions. Toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, both leaders committed to maintain close coordination on DPRK issues moving forward, in lockstep with the Republic of Korea (ROK). The President also expressed support for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.”
  
  또 바이든 대통령은 북한 정권에 의한 일본인 납치 문제의 즉각적인 해결에 대해서도 지지를 표명했다고 백악관은 전했습니다. 백악관 고위당국자는 정상회담 후 이어진 브리핑에서 “두 정상이 회담을 통해 우리가 목도한 북한의 도발을 강력히 규탄하고 양국이 외교적으로 준비가 돼 있다는 점을 분명히 했다”고 말했습니다.
  
  [백악관 고위 당국자]“First of all, both countries obviously strongly condemned the provocations that we've seen from North Korea made clear that the two countries were prepared for diplomacy but under the given--what North Korea had undertaken, that was extremely important to have clear statement of vigilance and purpose.
  
  그러나 “북한이 취한 행동을 감안할 때 경계와 목적을 분명히 명시하는 것이 매우 중요하다고 밝혔습니다. 이어 바이든 대통령은 미국이 “북한의 도발 가능성을 차단하기 위해 취할 수 있는 후속 조치에 대해 한국, 일본과 긴밀히 협력하겠다는 뜻을 분명히 했다”며 “향후 며칠간 미국 정부 내 관련 부처에서 더 많은 내용들이 발표될 것”이라고 설명했습니다.

  또한 북한이 ‘잠정 중지했던 모든 활동을 재가동하는 문제를 신속히 검토해 볼 것’이라고 경고한 데 대해서는, “북한의 성명을 주목했다”면서 “진전 상황을 주시하고 있고 그런 성명에 대해 우려한다”고 밝혔습니다.

We are in close consultation with all our allies and partners and other countries in the Indo Pacific and we've sent a very clear message to North Korea in an effort to dissuade them for further provocative steps. The United States and South Korea remain open to diplomacy but such such a set of steps would be most unwelcome, particularly at this delicate time in Northeast Asia and globally more generally.”
  
  이어 “우리는 인도태평양 역내 모든 동맹, 파트너, 기타 국가들과 긴밀히 협의하고 있으며, 북한이 추가 도발 조치를 취하지 않도록 설득하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 북한에 매우 분명한 메시지를 보내왔다”고 설명했습니다. 이어 “미국과 한국은 여전히 북한과의 외교에 열려 있지만, 북한의 이 같은 일련의 조치는 매우 환영받지 못할 것이며, 특히 동북아시아를 포함한 국제 정세가 지금처럼 민감한 시기에는 더욱 그러할 것”이라고 지적했습니다.
  
  또한 “바이든 대통령이 일본에서 북한으로 끌려간 납치 피해자들의 송환을 위한 일본 정부의 노력을 강력히 지지했다”며, “이는 납치 피해자들의 귀환을 지원하려는 미국의 지속적인 노력을 분명히 보여준다”고 말했습니다.

These Japanese taken from their homes. and promised that our teams would continue the closest possible coordination, both potential arenas of diplomacy and on areas of common purpose to send a strong message of deterrence.”
  
  그러면서 미국 정부는 “강력한 억제 메시지를 보내기 위해 외교의 잠재적 영역과 공통 목적의 영역에서 가능한 가장 긴밀한 협력을 계속해 나갈 것을 약속했다”고 밝혔습니다.
