  Nietsche's next step is to attack our existing values, and to assert that we ought not to want to preserve them in any case. What enabled human beings to emerge from the animal state, he says, and to develop civilization, including everything we mean by the word culture, was the perpetual elimination of the weak by the strong, the incompetent by the competent, the stupid by the clever. Only because these processes carried on over countless ages did the things that we most value about our human existence come into being. But then along came the so-called moralists like Socrates and Jesus and said that there should be laws to protect the weak against the strong, and that justice should reign, not strength; and that the meek, not the enterprising should inherit the earth. The very processes by which man had been raised above the animals, and civilization brought into being, were then put into reverse.
  
  Natural leaders― the confident, the courageous, the innovators― were shackled by value systems that set them on equal terms with the mediocre mass of mankind. The typical characteristics of slaves were hailed as virtues: a life of service to others, self-denial, self-sacrifice.Even gifted individuals were what Nietzsche calls "un-selfed" by this. And it was all done in the name of morality! It is all, says Nietzsche, the worst possible decadence, a denial of everything that has produced culture and civilization.   Nietsche의 다음 단계는 현존하는 가치를 공격하는 것이고 어떤 경우에도 그 가치를 보존하기를 원하지 말아야 한다는 것을 주장하는 것이다. 인간으로 하여금 동물상태로부터 벗어나서, 우리가 문화라는 말에 의해서 의미하는 모든 것을 포함해서, 문명을 발전시키게 된 것은 강자에 의한 약자를, 유능한 자에 의한 무능한 자를, 똑똑한 자에 의한 멍청한 자를 영속적으로 제거하였기 때문이라고 그는 말한다. 이러한 과정이 장구한 세월 동안 계속되었기 때문에 인간 생존에 대해서 우리가 가장 가치 있게 여기는 것들이 생겨났었다. 그러나 그때 Socrates와 Jesus 같은 소위 도덕주의자들이 나타나서 강자에 대항해서 약자를 보호할 수 있는 법이 있어야 하고, 힘이 아니고 정의가 지배해야 하고, 진취적인 사람이 아니고 순응하는 자들이 세상을 물려받아야 한다고 말하였다. 인간이 동물로부터 상승하고 문명이 탄생하게 된 바로 그 과정이 逆轉(역전)하였다. 천부적인 지도자들은―자신만만한 사람들, 용기 있는 사람들, 혁신가들―평범한 인류 대중들과 동등한 관계로 묶어 놓는(set) 가치체계에 의해서 족쇄를 채이게 되었다.
  
  타인을 섬기고 자기를 부정하고 자기를 희생하는 삶인, 노예들의 전형적인 특성이 미덕으로 환호를 받게 되었다. 심지어 재능 있는 개인들도 이것에 의해서 소위 Nietzsche가 말하는 '자아를 박탈당하게' 되었다. 그런데 그것이 모두 도덕의 이름으로 자행된 것이다! 그것은 문화와 문명을 창조한 모든 것을 부정하는 것인, 할 수 있는 최악의 퇴락이라고 Nietzsche는 말한다. 그것이 계속 진행되도록 허용한다면 세상에서 우리가 가장 가치 있게 생각하는 모든 것에 종말을 가져올 것이다. 우리는 결단코 이런 노예도덕을 가지고 계속 살아가서는 안 된다.

  민주주의의 약점
  
  니체는 현대 민주주의 체제에서는 대중이 다수의 힘으로 하늘이 보낸 지도자나 영재들을 발목을 잡고서 문명의 발전을 저해한다고 주장했다. 현대 민주주의 사회가 진취적인 사람보다는 패기가 없는 자들 대변하는 者가 세상을 지배하고, 凡才(범재)가 英才(영재)에게 족쇄를 채우고, 다수의 약자와 무능한 자들이 소수의 창조적이고 혁신적인 지도자들을 끌어내리는 反문명적인 타락의 시대라는 말도 했다.
  
  이것은 목자가 양떼를 이끄는 것이 아니라 양떼가 목자를 지도하는 것과 같다. 오합지졸이 장군을 지휘하는 격이자, 다수가 俊才(준재)를 지도하는 격이다. 문명을 창조하는 것은, 보다 우수한 자가 보다 열등하거나 범용한 자를 선도하는 체제에서 가능하다. 자연이 빚어내는 모든 종류의 지도자―상상력이 뛰어난 사람, 진취적인 사람, 창조적인 사람, 대담한 사람, 용기 있는 사람, 호기심이 있는 사람, 용맹한 사람― 이런 하늘이 내린 지도자들이 多衆(다중)이 설치한 도덕적 굴레에서 해방되어 자유롭게 삶을 최대한으로 추구하고 그들의 삶을 충족시켜야 한다. 니체는 이런 삶의 욕구(drive)를 권력 의지(will to power)라고 했다.(계속)
