*People met on my backpacking57 – Lunar New Year in Korea

The history of Korean New Year's Day.

One of the very strange or ridiculous phenomena I saw through my world trip was the Lunar New Year¡¯s Day. The following are examples that I have witnessed in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Mongolia, Brazil, and Malawi, Uganda, you name it.

What surprised me was that on Lunar New Year's Day, they set off firecrackers loudly on the streets and around their houses, and burn incense as well as paper money. But they were all Chinese. I mean I've never seen any other ethnic group other than the Chinese in the world, including mainland China, do such a strange thing to celebrate Lunar New Year.

Who than introduced the first solar calendar in Korea? It was Kim Hong-jip's enlightenment government. They tried to change the lunar calendar to the solar calendar to meet the world civilization standards in vain.

Japan changed from the lunar calendar to the solar calendar in 1872 after the Meiji Restoration.

After Rhee Syng-man became the president of the Republic of Korea in 1948, he excluded the Lunar New Year's Day from public holidays on June 4, 1949, and set the Lunar New Year's Day as a three-day holiday from January 1st to January 3rd.

On January 26, 1952, when the Korean War was in full swing, Pres. Lee announced the following. "Solar New Year's Day is held in common all over the world. It is not for only one country. Having a New Year twice a year is a great deal of harm, so the Lunar New Year should definitely be eliminated," he said.

An American-Korean also said, "I can't forget President Lee Seung-man's slogan of 'The Lunar New Year is a shame of our people'."

The Park Chung-hee administration also designated only the Solar New Year¡¯s Day as a public holiday, and never admit that the Lunar New Year¡¯s Day.

In 1985, the Chun Doo-hwan administration designated the Lunar New Year as a public holiday, calling it "Folk Day."

In February 1989, the Roh Tae-woo administration changed Folk Day to New Year's Day and set the Lunar New Year as a three-day holiday. This was the first time in Korean history and officially the result of the government's recognition. Since 1991, the New Year's holiday has been reduced from three days to two days.

Since 1998, during the Kim Dae Jung administration, the name "Seol(Lunar New Year¡¯s Day)" was abolished, and the two-day holiday was also reduced to one day. It¡¯s the opposite decision of the Rhee Syng-man and Park Jeong-hee governments, which abolished the Lunar New Year, to prevent having a New Year twice a year. (Refer to reporter Kim Yongsam's article)

  *Thank you.
