People met on my backpacking 71 - Eating beef in Kolkata India

.

(I recently heard the story of a traveler who came back from backpacking to India. Unbelievably, he stayed at the guesthouse in 'Suther Street' in Kolkata, where I stayed 30 years ago. I unexpectedly found that there's little change judging from his experience in the same place. Because I remembered the words of a French traveler I met when I was in Kolkata. "India will never change. I've been here many times in 25 years, and nothing has changed." he said. Then, what's the charm of India? Anyway, India has something strange power holding the world traveler. Anyway, this backpacker totally agreed with my experience in India. I've traveled to India seven times, a total of 12 months.)

.

.

My story; I have one of the most useful and practical information for you. It's a matter of eating. As you might know India is a country of the vegetarians. It means that you have no chance to eat meat during your backpacking in India. Of course for the vegetarians, no problem at all. But not for the meat-eaters. Some guys who love meat have something serious symptoms such as dizziness. it's understandable anyway. Of course, it's not a big problem for the now-common crappy backpackers. I mean they do everything with their money. India is no exception to this rule.

.

The Point : Once being in Calcutta, most of the backpackers stay in 'Shuder' street called 'Kaosan road', the backpacker's paradise in Bangkok. You can see a fire brigade at the end of the 'Shuder' street. Turn right before the fire brigade and walk straight 30meters and then turn left, keep going down about 300ms, there you can see a streetcar line(It's the way to the Mother Theresa's shelter). From there turn right again and you¡¯ll see a big restaurant at a distance of 15 m. That's it. People there are the natives. Of course they are not Hindus but Muslims. So, they do eat beef.

.

Right, the meat in this house was good and very cheap. They sell beef steamed or stir-fried in a dish. Two loaves of bread, a cup of tea. You can enjoy them with no worrying about money. It might be an interesting experience for you, so I recommend you to try it to supplement your nutrition there. Right, another aspect of India is there.

.

I stayed at a guest house for the longest among the many hostels on the 'Suede' Street. I told the backpackers I met there, especially to some Japanese friends and Western friends who really wanted meat. Of course, they really enjoyed it.

.

Luckily, I happened to meet them in 'Calcutta', went to a restaurant they used to in Calcutta. I stayed in the same hostel (the same Muslim-run place). Eating and hanging out together. That made me go to their restaurant operated by Muslims. Anyway, thanks to these guys, I could enjoy meat more than enough. Felt great at that time even think of it now. Well they are still in my memory.

.

Well, I hope that it will help you enjoy your travelling in India. If you try to ask local people or backpackers wherever you go, you will surely get the most latest and correct information from them. But don¡¯t try to every local people I mean not a few of them are tricky. The more you try to talk, the more you get unexpected pleasure.

.

*Thanks
