  (카오산로드에서 만난 훔볼트 대학생들)
  
  방콕의 카오산로드는 배낭 여행자들의 천국임이 틀림없는 것 같다. 예전과 달리 이곳 방콕도 예외 없이 폭탄 테러를 당했건만 이에는 전혀 아랑곳없다. 세계 각국의 여행자들이 끊임없이 밀려든다. 인종 전시장이 따로 없다. 성탄 전야도 그렇지만 특히 送舊迎新(송구영신)을 뜻하는 12월 31일 밤의 카운트다운 과정은 절정 그 자체다.
  
  이곳엔 어딜 가나 값싸고 맛있는 음식을 즐길 수 있는 곳이 많다. 취향에 따라 다르지만, 너무 서구화된 레스토랑보다는 태국 전통이 살아 있는 곳이 좋다. 격식보다는 자유분방함을 즐길 수 있는 路上(노상) 식당가가 인기다. 식탁 의자 등 모든 것은 낡았다. 그런데도 가장 많은 사람이 모이는 곳 또한 이곳이다.
  
  우리 夫婦는 겨우 자리를 잡고 앉았다. 옆자리 사람들의 이야기를 들어보니 러시아인들이다. 또 맞은편에선 佛語(불어)가 들린다. 이곳의 특징은 음식을 시켜놓고 기다리는 시간이 너무 길다는 것. 그런데도 많은 사람이 몰리는 이유는 역시 값싸고 맛있는 태국적 전통 분위기 때문이다. 우리가 주문한 음식이 나왔다. 치킨 볶음과 두부 채소볶음과 밥. 꽤 그럴 듯하다. 맛도 그만이다. 잠시 후 우리 옆자리에 자리가 비자마자 두 남녀가 앉는다. 남자는 20대 중반의 백인, 여자 역시 비슷한 나이였지만 용모는 동양인, 정확히 말하면 韓國係(한국계)다. 이는 나의 직감이다. 세계여행을 통해 해외 입양자를 수없이 봤기에 거의 예외가 없다. 두 사람은 獨語(독어)로 얘기를 나눈다. 10여 분이 지났다. 남자가 왜 자기가 주문한 음식이 안 나오는지 궁금해하는 눈치다.
  
  A: 나…B: 그
  
  내가 말을 걸었다. 이곳에 오는 손님들은 인내의 高手(고수)들이라고. 이 친구가 반색하며 마치 기다렸다는 듯이 질문을 퍼붓는다.
  
  나 : 여기서 식사하려면 대단한 인내심이 필요해요.
  그 : 정말요? 왜 그래요? 내가 보기엔 저들이 일을 안 하는 것 같은데요.
  나 : 그냥 꾹 참으세요. 인내심 없이는 여기서 밥 못 먹어요.
  그 : 당신은 이곳 사람이에요?
  나 : 아니요. 우리는 서울에서 왔어요. 태국인처럼 보이나요?
  그 : 정말 구분을 못 하겠어요.
  나 : 맞아요. 나도 실은 서양인들 얼굴만 봐선 구분을 잘 못 해요. 하지만 어느 나라 사람인진 알 수 있지요. 독일인이지요?
  그 : 맞습니다. 어떻게 알았어요?
  
  나 : 당신 말을 듣고 알았지요. 나는 불어, 독어, 스페인어, 러시아어, 스웨덴어 등을 조금씩 알기 때문에 국적 정도는 쉽게 알아요. 외국어를 많이 알면 세계여행이 더 재미있고 유익합니다. 알다시피, 세계인들과 대화를 나눈다는 것은 그냥 재미있다는 것 이상으로 유익한 것이 많습니다. 그건 그렇고, 독일 어느 도시에서 왔어요?
  
  그 : 나는 베를린 출신입니다. 우리는 베를린에 살고 있습니다.
  나 : 그래요? 우린 독일에 세 번이나 갔어요. 통독을 한 다음 해에 갔고, 두 번째는 통독 10주년일 때, 세 번째는 통일 20주년 때 갔습니다.
  
  그 : 대단합니다. 통독을 할 때 전 아직 어릴 때였는데.
  나 : 그러니까 지금 나이가…음, 대학생 같은데, 그렇지요?
  그 : 아니요. 대학 졸업은 벌써 했구요. 음…그래서 베를린 여행은 좋았습니까?
  
  나 : 그럼요. 가만있자. 우선 브란덴부르크 문 근처의 훔볼트 대학교를 가 봤고…
  그 : 잠깐요. 우리 둘 다 훔볼트대학에 다녔어요. 근데, 거기서 뭘 봤어요?
  
  나 : 먼저, 캠퍼스 주변을 둘러보고 본관 건물 안으로 들어갔어요. 운 좋게도, 우리는 복도 끝에 있는 커피 자판기를 봤지요. 피곤한 여행자에게 따끈한 커피 한잔은 웬만한 약보다 낫지요. 한 번 생각해 보세요. 낯선 곳이지만 아주 유명한 대학교의 복도에서 부부가 함께 맛있는 커피를 마시는 행복한 순간을…그리고 우리는 이층으로 올라갔지요. 그곳 복도에는 유명 인사들의 초상화가 걸려있더군요. 카를 마르크스, 알베르트 아인슈타인, 프리드리히 엥겔스, 헤겔, 피히테, 랑케, 쇼펜하우어와 같은 역사적 인물들이었습니다. 스웨덴 탐험가 스벤 헤딘 등…. 기억하기엔 너무나 많았습니다. 마르크스나 아인슈타인의 초상화를 봤을 때, 우리는 수백 년 된 역사적 인물과 함께하고 있다는 느낌을 받았습니다.
  
  그 : 맞아요. 그들은 훔볼트 출신입니다. 일부는 그곳에서 공부했고, 또한 노벨상도 받았습니다. 우리 역사는 아주 길고 또한 구조적으로 매우 복잡합니다.
  나 : 당신들은 훔볼트의 멤버 중 한 명이라는 자부심이 대단할 것 같아요. 당신들은 마르크스의 제자이자 아인슈타인의 학생입니다. 내가 저 유명한 역사적 인물들의 눈동자를 마주 본다는 것은 아주 특별한 경험이었습니다.
  그 : 천만에요. 아인슈타인은 괜찮지만 마르크스는 아닙니다. 내겐 관심 없는 사람이에요.
  
  나 : 그래요? 이상하게 들리겠지만, 한국엔 아직도 마르크스 사상을 추종하는 자들이 꽤 있지요. 그들은 여전히 정치적 경제적 이슈를 만들어 냅니다.
  그 : 설마, 농담이겠지요. 이해가 안 돼요. 마르크스는 소련 붕괴 후 잊혀진 인물인데요. 내가 알고 있는 한국은 자본주의 국가이고 또한 경제 강국으로 알고 있습니다. 그런데도 그들이 여전히 마르크스주의를 따른다는 건 좀 그렇네요. 근데, 이유가 뭐예요? 이해하기 힘든데요. 잘 아시잖아요. 오늘날 전 세계는 마르크스와 같은 사기꾼의 쓸모없는 이데올로기로 경쟁하지 않습니다. 그럼요 실물 경제지요, 자본주의 경제학으로 싸우고 있습니다. 아마 한국은 아직도 이상주의를 꿈꾸고 있나 보지요. 다시 말하지만, 공산주의 계획경제는 모두 망했습니다. -계속-

  People met on my backpacking 77- Humboldt university students -
  
  Bangkok's Khao San Road must be a backpacker's paradise. Unlike in the past, Bangkok is also exceptionally bombed, but they don’t care about it at all. Travelers from all over the world are endlessly pushed in. It’s like a racial exhibition hall. Christmas is also a pleasant atmosphere. However, the countdown process on December 31st is overwhelming to the street.
  
  There are many places where you can enjoy cheap and delicious food. It depends on your taste, but it’s better to have a place where you can feel Thai tradition more than a restaurant that is too westernized. Eating on the streets where you can enjoy the liberation rather than the formal style. Everything is old, such as a dining table chair. Nevertheless, it’s one of the most famous places they visit.
  
  We luckily got seat. Judging from the speaking next to me, they are Russians. On the other side, Frenches. The unusual thing of this place is that we must wait for food long. Nonetheless, they are always crowded because of the cheap, delicious, and Thai atmosphere. The food we ordered came out. Chicken stir fried with tofu vegetables and rice. Pretty good. After a while, a couple next to us left. Soon another couple took the seats. A man is a Caucasian person in the mid-20s, and a woman is similar in age, but her appearance is Oriental, precisely Korean. It’s my sense of intuition. Strangely, I’ve seen a lot of Korean overseas adopters through the world trip. They speak in German. It’s been over 10 minutes. Annoyingly, the man is wondering why it doesn’t come he ordered.
  
  I told him that the guests coming here were very patient. He liked what I told him. He asked me a lot of questions as if he had waited.
  
  A: Me,… B: He
  
  Me: You need to have a great patience to eat here.
  He: Really? Why is that? I think they don’t seem to be working hard.
  Me: Just be patient. Only people of a great patience can enjoy their food here.
  He: Excuse me but you are Thai people, right?
  Me: No. We are from Seoul Korea. Do we look like Thais?
  He: Sorry. It’s hard for me to tell.
  Me: No problem. I understand it. I also can’t tell westerners who is who. But I can tell where you come from. Germany. Right?
  He: Right. How did you know it?
  
  Me: From your speaking. I can tell which country you come from by your language. I know a little bit French, German, Spanish, Russian, Swedish...you name it. You know it helps me a lot to make my traveling abroad more fun and interesting. You know talking with people from all over the world is more than fun. Anyway, you from which city?
  He: From Berlin. We live in Berlin.
  
  Me: Is that right? We’ve been to three times. The first one was soon after reunified your country, the second one was on the tenth anniversary and the third one was when twenty’s anniversary of reunification.
  He: Wow, I was a baby when you first visit Berlin.
  Me: That means you are… well, I guess a college student, right?
  He: No. I’ve already graduated from it. So, you enjoyed Berlin?
  
  Me: Of course. Let see… the Humboldt university near the Brandenburg Gate and then...
  He: Wait a minute. She and I went to the Humboldt university. So, what did you see there?
  
  Me: First, looking around the campus and then went into the building. Luckily, we found a coffee machine at the end of the corridor. You know a cup of hot coffee for a tired traveler is better than any other medicine. Imagine how we were happy drinking delicious coffee together on the hallway in a very famous university. And then we went up to the second floor. There, we showed the most well known historical figures such as Karl Marx, Albert Einstein, Friedrich Engels, Hegel, Fichte, Ranke, Schopenhauer...the Swedish explore Sven Hedin….There were too many to remember. On seeing the portrait of Mark, Einstein on the wall of the hallway we felt as if we were in their time hundreds years ago.
  
  He: Yeh. That’s true. They are all from the Humboldt, some studied their and then won the novel prize. We have a long history and it’s much complicated to understand the history from the beginning.
  Me: You must be proud of yourself to be one of the Humboldt’s members. You are both the pupils of the Marx and also Einstein. It’s very interesting to me to face with those famous historical persons’ pupils.
  He: No way. Einstein is Ok but not Marx. He’s not my taste.
  
  Me: Really? Strangely to say that in Korea, there are still not a few Marx’s followers and they continuously make some issues of political and economical conflicts.
  He: No kidding. Hard to understand. Marx has been forgotten figure in this modern era since the collapse of Soviet Union. I know Korea, the South Korea is a capitalist state. And Korea is very strong in economy. Why they still follow the Marxism? It’s ridiculous.
  
  You know well that right now all over the world, they are fighting with only economics not that kind of old ideology such as Marxism. Maybe I think your country, Korea is an ideal country not a realistic country. Sure, the communist-planned economy has all been fall down. - be continued -
