People met on my backpacking 78 – Never free lunch

When thinking of Macedonia, two persons, Alexander the Great and Mother Teresa come to mind first. But today, it's not the story of Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, but a story from Lake O'Hrid's guesthouse.

As backpacking freely around the world, we(my wife & I) have many chances to enjoy talking to many kinds of people from all walks of life. One of them is the German in his 50s whom we met at the 'Ohrid' guesthouse in North Macedonia.

Six beds in our dormitory room, except him four of us rarely stay at dormitory room but going out of all day. One day I asked him what he was writing about with his computer. He said he was writing a novel.

He suddenly asked me an unexpected question during the conversation. He asked me about what he had heard about Korea from his friend. His friend told him that there were many free things in Korea.

"Is that true?" He asked me. In addition, he asked me that if there were especially many crooks such as voice phishing in Korea.

Agreeing with him, I told him the fact that about the free things in Korea. "In Korea, there are many free things everywhere. In other words, this is a phenomenon that is rarely seen in the West."

"Drinking water is free in Korean restaurants. Additional side dishes such as Kimchi are also free. Coffee after meals is also mostly free. Drinking water is also free in most public places, such as train stations.

After the 1988 Seoul Olympics, clean toilets nationwide, including roads and parks, are also free. Free lunch for students. Books from public institutions are also lent for free of charge. Public baths such as hot baths, including meals and subway use, are also free or almost free for the elderly.

He was surprised to hear that there was no limit to the number and distance of subway use for the elderly. He asked me about the length of the subway. He looked surprised once again when I said that we could go up to about 100 kilometers by subway.

His last words made me even more ashamed. "Sorry to say this but I think it needs a lot of money to provide so much for the public for free of charge. But you know some ones should pay for it. I don't think there's anything no charge in the world."

  Thanks.
