나의 태국 여행기, 치앙마이 도이수텝 사원

태국 여행 4일째:

올드타운 창푸악 게이트로 가서, 해자 건너, 길 건너면 도이수텝 가는 송태우들이 기다리고 있습니다. 1인당 편도 60밧, 10명이면 출발을 합니다. 그런데 한참 기다려도 손님이 오지를 않습니다. 관광객이 줄어든 형편이 여실히 보입니다.

현지인 커플 둘이 왔고, 우리에게 거기 호객꾼들이 딜을 해 옵니다. 한 사람당 왕복으로 200밧에 4명이 가자고…10명이 되면 왕복 120밧으로 갈 수 있지만, 그러리라는 보장이 없어서 흔쾌히 응했습니다.

치앙마이를 세 번째 왔듯, 도이수텝도 세 번째 또 가는 것입니다. 처음에는 걸어서 올라갔고, 두 번째는 엘리베이터로 올라갔다가 내려올 때는 걸어 내려왔고, 이번에는 왕복 다 엘리베이터로…엘리베이터 사용료와 절 입장비 1인당 50밧.

여전히 사원은 사람 많고, 화려하고…위에서 내려다보는 치앙마이 풍경도 좋고... 이 사원은 미안마 쪽 사원과 비슷해 보이는 면이 있습니다.

약속한 1시에 내려가서 우리 차의 운전자를 찾았습니다. 처음에 딜할 때는 그분이 호객꾼인 줄 알았는데, 운전자입니다. 40~50대의 아줌마인데 그분이 저렇게 억척스럽게 돈버는 이유는 무얼까요. 자식 때문이겠지요.

비슷한 세대에 태어나 나보다 더 극한 삶을 살아가는 사람들을 보면, 우리는 얼마나 운이 좋은 사람인지… 제 친구도 이슬람이나 북한에서 여성으로 태어나지 않은 것만으로도 감사하다는 이야기를 했습니다.

우리 아줌마 운전사는 다른 관광지 가자고 마케팅을 합니다. 저희가 관심 없어 하니 실망하고, 급포기~~~ 동승한 젊은 연인들을 동물원에서 내려주고, 저희 숙소를 향해 가다가, 방향을 급선회하고 동물원으로 다시 갔습니다. 그리고 우리 보고 조수석으로 옮겨 타라고 한 후, 젊은이들 여러 명을 뒤에 태웠습니다. 새 손님을 태우러 다시 돌아간 것… 10명씩 태우고 도이수텝을 왕복하면 그 아줌마는 1200바트(약 48,000원)를 버는건데, 이번에는 800바트 수입밖에 안 되었는데… 동물원 다녀오는 젊은이들 때문에 보충이 되었을 것 같습니다. 아줌마 얼굴이 피었습니다. 우린 좀 불편해졌지만 다행…

오는 길에 치앙마이대학을 통과해서 오다 보니, 치앙마이 대학을 구경하게 되었습니다. 캠퍼스가 정말 크고, 자연환경이 좋습니다.

도착해 새로운 사원 하나 더 구경하고, 어제 아침 먹은 사원에 벌써 선데이 마켓 음식 장사가 서고 있습니다. 팟타이, 팟씨유 한 접시 먹고, 코코넛 1통도 구입해 코코넛 물 마시고, 속도 긁어 먹었습니다 ^^

숙소로 와서 모레 치앙라이 일일 투어도 예약하고, 샤워하고, 휴식…저녁에는 선데이마켓 나가봐야 합니다^^

Day 4 of my trip to Thailand

Doi Suthep Temple in Chiang Mai

You can go to Changpuak Gate in Old Town and then cross the moat. After that, if you cross the street again, there are Songtaews(car) waiting for guests to go to Doisutep. One way per person is 60 baht($2.oo), and it leaves when 10 people collected. But even if we waited for a long time, no more customers showed up. It meant that the number of tourists were sharply decreased.

After a while, two local couples joined us. There were four people. Then the touters there came up to us and tried to make a deal. One lady asked for 200 baht round trip per person. The fixed fare was 120 baht round trip when 10 people collected. But we didn't want to wait more, so we gave it up and readily accepted her offer.

I've been to Chiang Mai three times so far and it's also my third visit to Doisutep. At first, I walked up here. Secondly I used the elevator to come up to the top but when coming down I walked. But today I used the elevator up and down. The elevator fee and temple admission fee were 50 baht per person.

It was as usual crowded and splendid in this temple. The view of Chiang Mai from the top of the Doisutep was fantastic, too. To me the temple looked similar to that of Myanmar.

We went down at 1 o'clock and met the driver of our Songtaew. Surprisingly the driver was the woman who made a deal with us a while ago at the starting place. We thought that she was a tout. Anyway she’s a woman in her 40s~50s. We wondered why she was so active in making money. We thought that she might work for her children.

When I see people who were born in the same period like me and see them live more harder lives than I do, I recognize how lucky I am. My friend also said she was very grateful that she was not born in Islam nations or N. Korea.

Our driver again marketed us to go to another tourist spot. But she soon gave it up 'cause we didn't pay any attention about it. On the way back to our hotel she dropped two young guys off at the zoo, and again she drove to our hotel. But she suddenly turned her car around and drove back to the zoo. And she told us to move into the passenger seat next to her, and then she picked up a bunch of other young guests and went back to our hotel. She usually earned 1,200 baht($20.oo) for a round trip to Doisutep with 10 people full in her car. But she earned only 800 baht this time. That's why she picked up more young guys at the zoo again. Then finally we could see her happy smile on her face. Of course we were a little bit uncomfortable with her behavior but we took it for granted. That also made us feel happy, too.

We passed Chiang Mai University on the way back to our hotel. So we wanted to get off there and took a look at Chiang Mai University. The campus was really big and wide, and the natural environment was so amazing.

We went to the market next to the temple where we had breakfast yesterday. There, we had a plate of Pad Thai, Pad Seed Oil, and bought a large coconut fruit. We drank all the water in the coconut and ate all the white things inside of the coconut, too. ^^

We then backed to our hotel. We’ll book here a daily tour of Chiang Rai the day after tomorrow and then take some rest with shower and maybe we will visit the Sunday Market in the evening^^
