The very nature of what Socrates did made him a disruptive and subversive influence. He was teaching people to question everything, and he was exposing the ignorance of individuals in power and authority. He became a highly controversial figure, much loved but also much hated. At one of the city's public festivals he was caricatured in the theatre in front of the whole population of Athens by the comic dramatist Aristophanes, in a play called The Clouds (423 BC). In the end, the authorities arrested him on charges of corrupting the young, and condemned to die by poison. The detailed story of his trial and death is one of the most inspiring tragedies in the history of human thought.
  
  What has made Socrates in some ways the best known of all philosophers is that it was he who began the relentless questioning of our basic concepts that has been characteristic of philosophy ever since. He used to say that he had no positive teachings to offer, only questions to ask. But this was disingenuous. From certain lines of questioning to which he continually reverts, it becomes clear that there are certain cherished beliefs that underlie much of what he says.

  Socrates를 어떤 면에서 철학자들 중에서 가장 유명하게 만든 것은 이후 철학의 특징이 된 우리가 가진 기본 개념에 대한 무자비한 심문을 시작한 사람이 그였기 때문이다. 그는 그가 제공할 긍정적인 가르침은 없고 오직 물어 볼 질문뿐이라고 늘 말하였다. 그러나 이것은 솔직하지 않은 것이었다. 그가 끊임없이 되돌아가는 질문의 경향(lines)으로부터 판단해보면, 그가 말하는 것의 많은 부분의 기저를 이루는, 그가 소중히 간직하고 있는, 어떤 신념들이 있다는 것이 분명해진다.

  Socrates의 문답법은 질의응답의 과정을 통해서 진리를 찾아가는 방법인 변증법을 철학의 중심부에 자리잡게 하였다. 그의 방법은 계속 존속해 왔고 특히 敎授法(교수법)으로 사용되고 있다. 그러나 문답법이 모든 종류의 가르침에 동등하게 적절한 것은 아니다―예를 들어서 그것은 수학 같은 순수 지식을 전달하는 데는 똑같이 적절하지는 않다―그러나 사람들로 하여금 그들이 이미 알고 있다고 생각하고 있는 것을 재점검하도록 하는 방법으로서는 그것은 비교가 되지 않을 정도 훌륭하다. 사람들이 Socrates의 문답법을 제대로 배우고 실행하였더라면 인류 역사상 종교나 사상이나 이념의 광신자들이 일으키는 신념의 전쟁으로 그렇게 많은 사람들이 죽고 다치는 비극적 참화는 피할 수 있었을 것이다. 물론 6·25 남침 전쟁도 없었을 것이다. 김대중-노무현-문재인의 좌파정권도 태어날 수 없었을 것이다.(계속)
