People met on my backpacking 85

(English is the window to see the world for me.)

The power of English in the world seen through my experience

Thinking that human activity is based on the economic activity for profit, whether it's spiritual or material. This starts from the principle of economics of getting maximum profit with the minimum cost.

In particular, today's world is a brutal world that competes for cutting-edge industries such as semiconductors. In other words, the state should put smart people into high-tech industries such as science and technology and also send them out to the world market. The government must mobilizes all means to win the international trade war that determines life or death. For this, they need and want more accurate information.

Naturally, it means that the country that best uses English, the medium of information, will succeed. History proves this. Just as Christianity became a world religion (Paul mastered the world languages of the time, Greek and Latin), so were other countries.

For example, the Phoenician maritime trade, Rome, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, and the USA became the hegemons at the time for the same reason. It's clear why most countries have been investing enormous amounts of time and money in the education of English, the world's official language in this century.

I have had various experiences while backpacking through the big and small cities in many countries. The beds were those YH and GH, which were loved by backpackers around the world. What I realized here was that they all spoke English. As we all know, it was the same whether Koreans and Japanese met, Israelis and Germans met, Arabs to Americans, Brazilians and Argentines, Indians and Thais met. The only language of communication was English.

I often visited places related to English education, such as local schools, or had many talks about English. And seeing that their enthusiasm for English was as great as that of Korea, I realized the importance of it. Of course, Putin in Russia, Kim Jongil in N. Korea, and Japan were no exception.

  --------------

  2000.12.03, Kookmin Ilbo newspaper

Putin: 'I will talk to Blair without an interpreter'

Russian President Vladimir Putin is taking English lessons for an hour a day, The Sunday Times reported on the 3rd. Putin, the first modern Russian leader to learn English, learns complex English grammar from his tutor almost every day. He wants to speak with Prime Minister Blair without an interpreter. He realized how important it is to have a conversation in English directly on the international stage, a Kremlin source said. N. Korea is no exception. It's reported that Chairman Kim Jongil directly discussed with the US Secretary of State about sending an English teacher.

In Japan, too, since the Meiji government, high-ranking bureaucrats realized the importance of English and even launched a movement to convert English to Japanese. Of course they failed. It's important, however, that they accurately grasped the power of English in the 1880s. They further emphasized the importance of speaking English, especially in 2000. The Economic Association, a business group, took the lead in this issue. They suggested investing in the English infrastructure instead of spending tens of trillions of yen on public construction. It was also during this time that 5,000 American English teachers were invited. Japan's enthusiasm for English is a part that compares a lot with Korea.
