어떤 사람은 흔히 프랑스를 예로 들어 그들의 국어 사랑을 찬양하듯 한다. 일리가 있다. 그러나 그와 더불어 그들의 국어 사랑과는 별개로 영어에 대한 애착도 일고 있음을 알아야 한다. 내가 프랑스를 처음 방문해(83년), 한 달간 지내면서 느낀 것은 액면 그대로 콧대 높은 프랑스인들이었다. 분명 영어로 기본 의사소통이 가능한데도 싫어함이 역력(歷歷)했다. 특히 공공기관이 더했다. 흔히 접하는 관광안내소 직원들 등.

그 후 몇 년 뒤 다시 방문했을 때, 그 느낌은 아직도 좀 껄끄러웠지만 내가 영어로 설명해 달라고 하면 옛날처럼 그냥 고개를 흔들거나 "농" 한 마디로 외면했던 태도와는 많이 달라졌다. 90년대 세 번째 방문은 확연히 달랐다. 이들도 본격적으로 철저한 실용영어 교육에 박차를 가하고 있었다. 오늘날 우리 중고등학생들의 영어회화 실력이 많이 향상됐듯이 그들도 그랬다. 역시 젊은이들의 적응력은 달랐다. 이는 세계 곳곳에서 만나는 프랑스 배낭 여행자들이 증명했다. 그들에게도 좋은 직장 구하고 지구촌 친구를 사귀기 위해 영어 구사력은 필수였다.

이 역시 다들 아는 얘기지만, 유럽인들끼리도 가령 영국인과 프랑스인 혹은 독인인과 프랑스인…등이 우연히 함께 합석할 때도(주로 숙소의 라운지 등에서) 그들끼리는 보이지 않는 역사적 감정이 작용함을 느낀다. 따라서 그들에게 비교적 무난한 한국인인 내가 합류하면 나에게 질문을 하거나 말을 거는 경우가 많았다. 그들은 다 영어를 잘한다. 왜 그럴까? 필요에 의해서다. 우선 자신에게 편하고 즐겁고 재미있다. 세계인들과 대화를 나누는 것이 그렇다. 문제는 한국과 일본의 젊은이들이다. 난 아직 이들이 서구인들과 어울려 대화를 즐기는 걸 거의 본 적이 없기 때문이다.

암튼, 내가 보기엔 골치 아픈 영어에 매달리지 않아도 될 것 같은 유럽의 부강한 나라들이 보이는 영어에 대한 태도다. 그들은 그 대체 능력의 기반(경쟁력)을 충분히 갖추고 있다고 보기 때문이다. 그러나 오히려 이들이 우리보다 더 영어에 적극적이란 점이 내가 직접 대화를 통해 알 게 것이다. 물론 이런 영어 열풍은 동양권인 일본 싱가포르 대만 등을 돌아다녀봐도 별반 다르지 않다. 그럼 인도와 그 주변 국가들, 이집트와 그 주변 국가들, 멕시코를 포함 페루, 태국과 라오스 미얀마 캄보디아...중국 등은 어떤가.

중국의 예로 북경대를 들겠다. 나는 한중 수교가 성사된 해에 그곳을 방문했다. 한국 대학교 캠퍼스와 다름없었다. 대형 현수막들로 뒤덮다시피 했다. 아카데미 토플, 보케뷰러니 22000 (33000), 타임반, 뉴스위크반 등, 난 학생 식당에 들어가 그들과 대화를 나눴다. 그들이 더 원했다. 이것저것 묻는 게 많았다.

당시 중국은 빈민국에 속했다. 북경 시내에 자전거와 수레가 차보다 더 많았다. 노상에 거울 하나 걸어놓고 머리 깎는 곳이 많았다. 나는 부자(富者) 나라에서 온 사람 대접을 받던 때였다. 암튼, 식사 후, 캠퍼스를 걷는 동안 학생들은 계속 나를 따라오며 영어로 질문을 했다. 이들 중 나와 대화를 좀 오래 하는 친구가 있으면 옆 친구들이 노골적으로 “야, 너 많이 늘었다. 대단한데…” 등 칭찬도 하고 부러워했다. 나도 한때 그랬듯이 이 북경대 학생들도 마치 거리에서 외국인을 보면 자신의 영어를 실험해보려고 끈질기게 달라붙는 그런 경우였다. 이 같은 에피소드는 중국은 물론 세계 곳곳에 늘여있다. <계속>

People met on my backpacking 86

(English is a sturdy backpack and shoes for me.)

Some people say that the French are very proud of their language, French. Agree with that. However, it's true that they realized the importance of English. What I felt when I first visited France (83) was that, as I always heard, they were very haughty. They really hated it even though they could talk in English. Especially, the workers of the tourist information center that I often visited were the same.

When visited there again a few years later, my feeling was still a little awkward, but they definitely changed. When I asked them to explain something in English, yes they did it so. They didn't just shake their heads or turn a blind eye with a word of "Non" like they used to. My third visit in 1990 was totally different. They were learning practical English hard. As expected, young guys were quick to adapt. I found this while talking to French backpackers I met around the world. Of course, they too wanted to find a good job and make friends around the world.

As you might know, I felt that invisible tension from their history between Europeans, for example, when English and French or German and French people happen to sit together (mainly in the lounge of the YH). For me? No problem. I mean I could join them without any tension. Because I had nothing to do with their problems.

Therefore, they often asked me questions or spoke to me. They were all good at English. Why? Because of the their need. Of course, English is so comfortable and fun for them as well as they make new friends. The problem is those young guys of Korea and Japan. I have yet to see them enjoy talking with Westerners.

Anyway, I thought Europeans need no effort to learn the headache English. Because they were already rich countries. However, I could find the fact that they were already more active in English than Koreans were. Of course, this English craze was not much different even if I visited Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan in Asia. No different at all in India, Egypt, Peru, Mexico, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, etc. What about China then?

Let me tell you my experience from Beijing University in China. Visited there in 1992 when Korea-China diplomatic relations were established. The air there was no different from the campuses of universities in Korea. There was fully covered with big banners saying that Academy TOEFL, Vocabulary 22000 (33000), TIME (NEWSWEEK) Magazine Study Group etc. I went into a student restaurant and talked with them. They seemed to prefer the conversation. They asked me a lot of questions.

At that time, China was a poor country. There were more bicycles and carts in downtown Beijing than cars. There were many barbershops with a mirror hanging on the walls of the street. I was treated like a man from a rich country. Anyway, after eating, while walking on campus, the students kept following me and asked questions in English. Among them, there's one guy who talked with me for a long time. A friend next to him spoke out. "Hey, your English has improved a lot. That's great...," he praised and envious of him. As I once did, these guys were just the same. They acted like they met a foreigner on the street. They had a strong will to practice speaking English with foreigners. Well, I think I have too many such kind of episodes to tell you.
