People met on my backpacking 89 –

*English was a spear and a shield to me.
  *Stories of China: (Unpleasant Cases)

  1) In China, which I saw during my trip, there were quite a few people who returned to live after giving up their American immigration life (2007). I thought it was a kind of phenomenon that emerged as China grew rapidly from the mid-2000s. Right, they were good at English. While I was walking down the street in Lanzhou, I found a travel agency that only traveled to China. I had already used some other country's domestic travel packages (India, the USA, S. Africa, Turkey, Bolivia, etc.). Needed some courage but it was worth it. It was a big help in understanding the overall cultural level of the country. Anyway, what I had never experienced in China was an experience in a pure Chinese group, so I participated with some courage and expectation inside. The schedule was to go to "Sian," including a guide and lunch. Got on the bus. A big bus was full of Chinese people. I sat in the back seat. The atmosphere in the bus was terribly noisy with their unusual loud voices. Even after the bus left, they didn't stop it. After a while, they became quiet as the movie was screened on a large monitor on the bus. It was just like turning off the power switch to a factory where machines were running noisy.

The story of the movie was a war in which Mao and Chiang Kai-shek fought jointly with Japan. They played the two-hour movie over and over again throughout the day. The most common features shown in the film (probably every two to three minutes) were the Red flag of five stars of CCP, the Communist Party symbols such as sickles, hammers and Mao Zedong faces. It was terrible. I felt like I was watching a mass brainwashing.

An unexpected issue occurred at lunch. Suddenly during the meal, a woman in her 50s in front of me started criticizing the United States in English. She lashed out at capitalism. What I couldn't stand was her next remark. She said that if China had not fought the war with the USA to save Joseon, today's Joseon, or the ROK, would have already disappeared. (The meaning of Joseon they say includes Korea.) She went on saying. She said something I couldn't stand anymore, "Joseon should thank China."

I said to her, "I can't agree with you if the Republic of Korea is included in the Joseon you're talking about. Because you have prevented the opportunity to achieve free unification, which is very important to us." She then stopped anything more to say. It was quiet around the table. Because they didn't know English. Well, it was really terrible for me, but it's a valuable moment when I vividly experienced the reality of the CCP.

  2) It is time to go to Shanghai from Guangzhou (1993. Jiang Zemin's regime). The train was packed, as usual. I spoke first to two men in their 50s in front of me. The way I always do, I told them a person or event they were proud of. "I like Qin Shi Emperor, the first to unify China." But unexpectedly, they didn't respond. Just in case, I pronounced "Qin shi Emperor" clearly, but it was useless. I wrote the emperor's name on a piece of paper instead of saying. They shook their heads after seeing what I wrote.

It was me who was more surprised. It was the name of Yubang that they wrote to me. They didn't even know the name 'Qinxi Emperor at all. I asked this to other Chinese people just in case. The results were the same. They said that only Yu Bang was of real Han descent who founded the Han Dynasty. Emperor Qin xi Emperor was nothing more than a northern wanderer to them. According to their saying, 92% of the current Chinese members are Han, and the rest are only 55 minorities. It was a really amazing view of history centered around them. In fact, throughout the history of China, the peoples and periods that dominated the entire country of China were mostly non-Han people, the northern peoples. The Han Dynasty ruled less than half and half. But I didn't think I needed to tell them this historical fact.

  3) This story is also a story that I talked to the Chinese people on a train (1994). This was also during the Jiang Zemin administration. He was a leader who took over the policy of embracing part of capitalism with the theory that Deng Xiaoping advocated reform and opening up and that it didn't matter whether it's a black cat or a white cat. Nevertheless, even political speech, let alone political freedom, was strictly controlled in China. It was also on the train that I learned about this (from Peking to Cheongdo).

Most people liked it when I sat face to face with them, greeted them briefly, and then chatted. However, there was a forbidden word. At least it was then. In other words, I shouldn't have asked them any political remarks, of course the names of politicians. At that time, I didn't know this and asked them what they thought about Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin. As soon as they heard me, their faces and eyes turned to tension and anxiety. And they turned their heads and remained silent. I can't forget their horrified look then. Although I realized this belatedly, China was already such a horrifying country.
