  *중국 여행 이야기 계속: 노예는 자존심도 분노도 없다
  
  6) 세계 여행과 세계 지도는 친구다. 선양(瀋陽)에서 만난 중국인과 중국 지도에 표기된 ‘황해’(黃海)를 놓고 나눈 이야기(2002). 내가 묵었던 숙소의 벽에는 대형 세계지도가 걸려 있었다. 거기에는 우리의 ‘서해’(西海)가 ‘황해’(黃海)로 표기돼 있었다. 우리 해양영토(海洋領土)인 ‘서해’가 사라진 것이다. 지도 제작사를 보니 중국이었다. 물론 평소에 가졌던 불만이자 의문 중 하나가 왜 우리나라 지도와 교과서에 ‘서해’는 없고 황해‘만 있을까였다. 그러나 국내용 명칭은 정상적으로 ‘서해’가 반드시 명기(明記)돼 있었다. {서해안고속도로, 서해일몰-서해명물-서해여행-서해안의 매력-서해안 특징, 서해대교, 서해해수욕장, 서해양식장, 서해수산연구소…등}
  
  그렇다면 이 지역은 대한민국 영토의 ‘서쪽 바다’임이 분명하다는 의미인데 왜 우리 영해의 뜻인 ‘서해’라고 못하고 중국이 일방적으로 선점(先占)한 ‘황해’만 인정할까? 최소한 ‘동해’와 ‘일본해’처럼 반드시 ‘서해’와 ‘황해’로 병기(倂記)해야 하는 것 아닌가? 일본이 일방적으로 우리의 ‘동해’를 지우고 ‘일본해’로 표기했을 때, 우리 정부와 온 국민은 분기탱천(憤氣撐天)해 일본 정부에 항의는 물론, 국제수로기구, 구글지도, 애플지도, 미국 CIA 월드팩트북, UN 사이트 지도에…나아가 그 엄청난 광고비를 들여 뉴욕 타임스 스퀘어 전광판을 통해 이 문제를 세계에 알리지 않았던가. 그 결과 아직 미진(微塵)하지만, 어느 정도 우리의 주장이 반영돼 ‘동해(East Sea)’와 ‘일본해(Sea of Japan)’가 병기됐다. 그런데 왜, 상대가 중국이면 정부(대통령)는 물론 온 국민이 입도 뻥긋하지 못하는 비겁하다 못해 비열하고 비굴한 굴욕적 모습을 계속 보이느냐다.
  
  암튼, 난 이 친구의 생각은 어떨까 싶어 물었다. “이 해역(海域) 절반은 당신네 ’황해‘이고, 이쪽 절반은 우리의 ’서해‘이다. 그런데 왜 당신네 지도에는 ’황해‘만 있고 ’서해‘는 없다고 생각하나?” 그는 한 마디로 “난 ’서해‘라는 말을 처음 듣는다. 우리에겐 ’서해‘ 그 자체가 없다.”라고 했다. 웬 억지인가 싶었지만, 곧 내가 한 방 얻어맞은 기분이었다. 실제로 그들은 평생 ‘서해’라는 명칭을 본 적도 들은 적도 없기 때문이다. 그들의 교과서와 지도엔 오직 ‘황해’(黃海)와 ‘동중국해’(東中國海) 그리고 ‘남중국해’(南中國海)뿐이었다.
  
  말이 난 김에, 이 또한 내가 인도 여행 중 인도인한테 받은 질문인데, 난 답을 못했다. 즉 한국 바다 이름엔 왜 한국이란 나라 이름이 없느냐는 것. 가령, 일본해, 중국해, 필리핀해, 인도양, 안다만해, 보르네오해, 아라비아해, 노르웨이해, 에게해, 영국해, 북극해 지중해, 홍해, 카리브해 등 한 번만 보거나 들어도 금방 그 바다가 어느 나라의 바다인지 안다. 그러나 그냥 ‘동해’ ‘남해’ 혹은 ‘서해’라 하면 어느 나라의 바다인지 전혀 알 수 없다. 왜냐면 동해, 서해, 남해는 대부분 나라에도 있기 때문이다. 한국인, 일본인, 중국인, 인도인, 필리핀인 앞에 세계지도를 펼쳐놓고 자기 나라의 ‘동해’가 어디냐고 물으면 각자 100%, 정확히 자국(自國)의 동쪽을 찍을 것이다.
  
  이는 너무나 당연한 얘기다. 한국인이 찍은 동쪽은 일본인에겐 서쪽이고, 중국인이 찍은 동쪽은 우리에겐 서쪽이다. 그래서 이 혼란을 피하고자 각국은 자국 바다에 국명을 붙인다. 사실 한국도 일본도 중세 이전부터 그냥 동해니 서해니 쉽게 불렀다(지구가 둥근지 몰랐으니까). 1602년 마테오 리치가 ‘일본해’로 고쳐줬고, 1871년 일본이 ‘조선해(朝鮮海)’로 고쳐줬다. 그 뒤 양국의 바다 명칭은 명확해졌다. 그러나 한국은 이를 거부하고 옛날 옛적 그대로가 좋다며 오늘까지 그냥 ‘동해’를 고집하고 있다. 이는 이성적 판단일까? 감성적 판단일까? 국제(경쟁)사회에서 감성(感性)이 이성(理性)을 이긴 적은 없다고 알고 있다.
  
  하여튼, 70년 이상 우리 ‘서해’가 중국의 ‘황해’로 표기돼 있음에도, 일본에 대한 태도와는 전혀 다르게, 이에 대한 정부든 학계든 언론이든 시민단체든, 중국에 공식 항의를 했다거나, 시민이나 대학생들이 중국 대사관 앞에 달려가 시정을 요구하는 피켓과 현수막을 걸어놓고 연일, 아니 단 하루라도, 미.일 대사관 앞에서 그러했듯이, 주먹 쥐고 고함치며 집단 항의를 한 적이 없다. 왜일까? 무식해서? 화낼 줄 몰라서? 정의감이 없어서? 애국심이 없어서? 아니다. 상대에 따라 다를 뿐이다. 우리의 동맹국인 미국이나 우방국인 일본이 그랬다면 난리가 났을 것이다.
  
  그런데 이상하게도 북괴와 함께 한반도를 거의 공산화 직전까지 몰고 갔던 실질적인 우리의 용서 못할 적(敵)인 중국엔 그저 상전(上典) 대하듯 재빨리 노예 자세를 취한다. 어떻게 아냐고? 지금까지 그랬으니까. 이처럼 정작 우리의 동맹국과 우방국에겐 무서운 한국 호랑이가 웬일인지 실질적으로 우리의 적국이었고(6.25 남침때), 지금도 사드 배치를 하지 말라는 등 사사건건 대한민국의 주권을 침해하는 중국인 앞에만 서면 갑자기 순(順)한 양(羊)으로 돌변한다. 이런 한국인의 야비(野卑)한 이중성(二重性, 노예근성)을 중국도 알고 일본도 알고 세계도 안다. 과연 한국을 겁내는 나라가 있을까? 어느 쪽이 더 비열하고 비겁하고 비굴한지 되돌아보게 된다. <계속>

  6) For world travel, world maps are of great help. This story is about the Chinese I met in Shenyang and the Yellow Sea marked on the Chinese map (2002). A large world map was hung on the wall of the hotel where I stayed. There, our "West Sea" was marked as "Yellow Sea" The "West Sea," our maritime territory, had disappeared. The map was made in China. Of course, one of the complaints and questions I usually had was why there's no "West Sea" in Korean maps and textbooks, but only the Yellow Sea. However, the name for domestic use was normally written as "West Sea." {let's say: West Coast Expressway, West Coast Sunset-West Coast Travel-West Coast Attractiveness, West Sea Bridge, West Sea Beach, West Sea Aquaculture Center, etc.}
  
  Strangely, however, we can't use the name "West Sea," which means our territorial waters, in maps and textbooks. This means that we acknowledge that China unilaterally marks only the Yellow Sea. This is not right. Of course, it must be written here as "West Sea" and "Yellow Sea" like "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan." When Japan unilaterally erased our "East Sea" and marked it as "Sea of Japan," our government and the whole nation protested to the Japanese government in anger. Of course, we also announced this to the International Hydrographic Organization, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and the CIA World Factbook. Furthermore, we brought this issue to the world through the Times Square electronic display in New York at the enormous cost of advertising. As a result, although it is still incomplete, "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" were written together as our arguments were reflected to some extent. However, if it's China, not only the Korean government (president) but also the whole nation just shut up. It's nothing but only a cowardly, mean, and servile humiliating attitude of the weak.
  
  Anyway, I was curious about his thoughts on this so I asked. “As you can see, half of this sea is your 'Yellow Sea', and this half is our 'West Sea'. But why do you think there is only 'Yellow Sea' and no 'West Sea' on your map?" In one word, he said, "It's news to me the word 'West Sea' for the first time. We don't have a ‘West Sea’ itself.” He was right. In fact, they have never seen or heard of the name ‘West Sea’ in their entire lives. There is no sea to the west of Chinese territory. Their textbooks and maps show only the ‘Yellow Sea’, ‘East China Sea’ and ‘South China Sea’.
  
  In addition, this is a question that an Indian asked me during my trip to India, but I couldn't answer it. In other words, his question was why there was no Korean name in the name of the Korean sea. For example, Sea of Japan, the Chinese Sea, the Philippine Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Andaman Sea, the Borneo Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Norwegian Sea, the Aegean Sea, the British Sea, the Arctic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Caribbean Sea. In this way, everyone quickly knows which country's sea it is. However, if you just say "East Sea," "South Sea," or "West Sea," no one knows which country's sea it is. Because the East Sea, West Sea, and South Sea are mostly in countries.
  
  If you spread a world map in front of Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, Indians, and Filipinos and ask them where their country's "East Sea" is, each will point to the exact east of their country. Of course, the east pointed by Koreans is the west for the Japanese, and the east pointed by the Chinese is the west for Koreans. So, to avoid this confusion, countries named their own seas. In fact, both Korea and Japan easily called it the East Sea or the West Sea even before the Middle Ages (because they didn't know the earth was round). Matteo Ricci from Italy corrected it to "Sea of Japan" in 1602, and Japan corrected it to "Chosun Sea" in 1871. Since then, the names of the two countries' Seas have become clear. However, S. Korea refuses to do so and have insisted on just "East Sea" until today, saying Koreans want it as it used to be. Is this a rational judgment or an emotional judgment? I know that in an international (competitive) society, emotions have never beaten rationality.
  
  Anyway, for more than 70 years, our "West Sea" has been marked as China's "Yellow Sea." But South Korea is completely different from its attitude toward Japan so far, and no one is protesting against China on this matter. The government, academia, the media have never made an official protest against China. Of course, the university students have never rushed to the Chinese Embassy to shout and protest collectively. Why? Because they don't know how to be angry? They don't have a sense of justice? They're not patriotic? No. Koreans only act differently depending on who the other person is. Koreans would not have put up with it if our allies, the United States or Japan, had done so.
  
  Unbelievably, however, Koreans quickly take a slave attitude toward China, which is practically our unforgivable enemy who drove the Korean Peninsula to the brink of communism with N.Korea. How do I know? Because it's been like that until now. As such, Korea is a scary tiger for our allies, but not for China. China was practically our enemy (during the Korean War), and even now China is an enemy who violates the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea, saying not to deploy THAAD to S. Korea. Nevertheless, Korea suddenly turns into a pure sheep in front of the Chinese. China, Japan, and the world know about this despicable duality of Koreans. Is there a country that is afraid of Korea? I don't know if Koreans know what they are doing and where they are going right now rationally.
