the two faces of Seoul

.

Yesterday I went to Acha Mountain with some of my friends who used to climb mountains around Seoul on weekends. In fact, it is always so crowded on weekends such as Bukhansan, Dobongsan, and Gwanak Mountain in Seoul. Anyway, I rushed there soon because I was curious about the Gwanghwamun rally around 4 p.m. after getting off the mountain.

.

The rally led by Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon had already ended. Only two places had a small number of people gathered and shouted for the arrest of the former president, Moon Jae In. However, on the roads in front of Kyobo Building(BookStore) and on the Seoul City Hall side, they were still shouting slogans such as "President Yoon Suk Yeol's resignation" and "First Lady Kim Gun-hee" through large speakers and large screens.

.

In Gwanghwamun Square, hundreds of young people dressed in black were marching in front of the Kyobo building with all kinds of slogans such as "restoration of democracy," "no sex discrimination," and the survival of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family." Perhaps because they were young people, it was definitely different from the atmosphere of the Taegeukgi(Korean national flag) rally. It was overwhelming enough to attract the attention of the surroundings.

.

Just one day before, North Korea fired hundreds of ballistic missiles into our territorial waters, the East Sea and the West Sea. If it were Japan, an emergency would have been put on and evacuation drills would have continued immediately.

.

In fact, they soon stopped running trains when North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan into the Pacific Ocean a few days ago. The university conducted missile bombing drill. The area was ordered to evacuate. However, Korea was completely different from Japan. South Koreans were not interested in North Korea's missile attacks, not the government or the people. Instead, I saw two faces of heaven and hell on a completely different level in Seoul.

.

Acha Mountain was like heaven, wearing nice hiking clothes and backpacks, laughing, talking, sharing food, and taking pictures like people on a spring picnic. On the other hand, Gwanghwamun was the opposite. The shout of opposition to the ROK and anti-democracy, which were so terrible that my hearing was falling apart, was about to overturn the whole world.

.

More than 430 years ago, Yasuhiro Tachibana, a Japanese envoy, came to Joseon (Korea). I remembered what he said then. When he was passing through a village in Joseon and saw a guard holding a spear. "You have a very short handle of spear," he said, and after he arrived in Seoul, he was treated to a welcoming party given by the government. He saw the disorderly attitudes of waitresses and musicians at the party and spoke. "Your country is about to collapse. As all the rules and manners have been broken like this, it must be ruined soon." After that, the Japanese Invasion of Joson(Korea) took place in six years later.

.

I thought he would say the same thing if he saw the two images of Seoul I saw today. No, he is probably dumbfounded to see Korea more divided and confused than it was 430 years ago he saw. He was likely to say this after a thoughtful silence.

.

Korea is indeed a rare country. Koreans have no reason. It's a weird country full of emotions. It's even stranger to me how a country like this isn't going down yet. It is much worse now than the chaotic situation of the Koreans I saw when I came to Korea 430 years ago. In fact, Korea is no different then and now. The owner is the one who steals Korea first. Well, this is no joke..."

.

Thank you.
