(여행 중 졸지에 이소룡 대접을 받을 줄이야...)

저녁 8시경 우리 숙소에 일본인 배낭여행자 두 명이 왔다. 한 명은 대학생이고 다른 친구는 직장인이다. 모처럼 보는 동양인 친구들이라 반갑다. 그들은 이미 남아공의 케이프타운과 요하네스버그에서 15일간 배낭여행을 하고 모로코로 올라온 것이다. 말하자면 아프리카 대륙의 최남단(最南端)과 최북단을 종단(縱斷)한 것이다. 이 얼마나 멋진 코스인가. 분명 신출내기들은 아닐 것이란 짐작에 혹시 하고 물어보았더니 역시 그랬다. 물론 내가 만나 본 많은 일본 배낭여행자들도 그랬다. 즉, 배낭여행 경력들이 탄탄했다는 말이다.

암튼, 부럽다. 첫째, 난 아직 안 해본 코스라서 그렇고. 둘째, 우리의 젊은이들과 비교해봐도 그렇다. 세계를 누비는 젊은이들이 많다는 것은 우선 그 나라의 국력(國力)과 정비례(正比例)함을 알 수 있다. 그도 그럴 것이 세상을 많이 돌아본 젊은이들이 그렇지 않은 젊은이들(우물 안 개구리)보다 개인적으로 한발 앞서가는 것이 틀림없기 때문이다. 이는 선진국이나 강대국의 공통점이다.

세계 배낭여행자들(거의 20대 초반의 서구인과 일본인들)을 만나면 나는 거의 습관적으로 질문이 있다. 그들의 여행경비(旅行經費)조달 방법과 또 기간이다. 그런 걸 물어보는 이유는 그들은 우리의 사고방식과 생활 패턴이 확연히 다르기 때문이다. 이 친구들에게도 물어보았다. 대답은 항상 간단했다. 보통 일 년 동안 아르바이트를 하여 스스로 여행비용을 마련한다는 것. 부모에게 경비 협조를 부탁하지도 않고 또 받아 주지도 않는다는 것. 모든 책임(責任)과 권리(權利)는 자신의 것이라는 점을 절대 빠뜨리지 않는다는 것.

그들이 세계 배낭여행을 가고 안 가고는 전적으로 자신이 결정한다. 보모의 동의나 승낙이 필요치 않다. 그런 생각조차 없는 게 보통이다. 보기에 따라선 부모와 자식 간에 인정머리라곤 일 푼어치도 없는 듯하다. 그러나 그들은 그렇게 가르치고 또 길들여진다. 일본인들과 대화를 하다 보면 서양인으로 착각할 때가 많다. 그들의 피부(皮膚)만 표백(漂白)시켜 놓으면 감쪽같이 속을 만큼 서양적이기 때문이다. 그들의 사고(思考) 체계는 서양의 합리주의와 실용주의 그리고 개인주의에 못지않다.

일례로 그들의 철저한 개인부담원칙(個人負擔原則)은 찬바람이 날 정도다. 이 원칙은 어느 곳에서든 적용된다. 한 번은 말레이시아 ‘클랑’에서 일본인 가족(부친과 두 아들)과 한 식당에서 만났다. 그들이 계산할 때 각자가 먹은 걸 냈다. 그것이 옳으냐 그르냐를 떠나 한 가지 분명한 사실은, 그와 같은 비용부담(費用負擔) 원칙을 채택한 나라들이 오늘날 세계를 좌지우지(左之右之)하는 일류(一流) 강대국들의 공통된 모습이란 점이다.

이는 곧 그들은 자신의 사고(思考)와 행동에 있어 독립적이고 자주적(自主的)임을 뜻한다. 그들은 그렇게 세계 구석구석을 섭렵(涉獵)하고 또 그렇게 세계를 배운다. 우물 안에서는 절대 보이지 않는, 아니, 볼 수도 없는 세계를 그들은 직접 체험하면서 보고 듣고 배운다. 나는 세계인들과 대화를 나누면서 항상 느끼는 것이 있다. 즉 선진강대국(先進强大國)은 어느 날 갑자기 우뚝 솟는 것이 아니라는 것. 그들에겐 주인의식 즉, 주체(主體)적이고 독립적인 사고로 세계를 배우는 탄탄한 젊은 층이 많다는 것이다.

저녁 9시쯤, 알제리인 친구 크헤릴이 왔다. 우리는 이미 3일간 같이 지내며 많은 대화를 나눈 사이다. 그는 나에게 오늘은 어디를 구경했는가를 묻곤 한다. 거리에서 있었던 일이나 극장에서 있었던 일을 말하면 그냥 웃어넘기기도 하고 한두 마디 조언을 덧붙이기도 한다. 오늘 내가 모스크에 갔다 온 얘길 하니 잘했단다. 그렇지 않아도 자기가 꼭 추천(推薦)하고 싶은 곳이었단다. 매우 사려(思慮) 깊은 친구가 아닐 수 없다.

잠시 후 일본인 친구들이 다시 내 방에 들어왔다. 우리와 합석(合席)은 했지만 도통 대화가 안 된다. 문제는 일본인 친구들의 영어 발음이다. 이들이 말하면 크헤릴은 한 번에 알아듣지 못하고 꼭 나에게 다시 묻는다. 이 같은 일이 계속 반복되자 일본인들은 조용히 일어나 나가 버린다. 자존심이 상해서일까 아니면 상대에게 폐(弊)를 끼친다고 생각해서일까. 아무튼, 가끔은 이 같은 일본인 친구들의 행동도 보게 된다. 그러나 언어 구사력(驅使力)과 관계없이 적극적으로 대화에 참여하는 일본인 친구들도 꽤 많이 봤다.

크헤릴은 이번 기회에 한국을 더 알고 싶은 모양이다. 한일(韓日) 관계에 대해서도 묻는다. 나의 역사관(歷史觀)과 민족관(民族觀)에 대해서도 묻는다. 누구에게나 민족의식, 민족주의 그 자체엔 별문제가 없다. 단, 무엇이나 그러하듯 지나치면 문제가 된다. 말하자면 폐쇄적(閉鎖的) 민족주의가 개방적(開放的) 민족주의를 압도(壓倒)하는 현상 등이 그렇다. 나는 이 점에 있어 민족주의든 종교적 이념이든 예외가 아니라고 했다. 내 말에 고개를 끄덕인 그에겐 남다른 조국애(祖國愛)가 있었다. 종교적 이념(내전內戰에 가까운 종교분쟁)에 의한 자신의 조국 알제리가 혼란에 빠져 있기 때문이다.

오늘 아침 식사도 호스텔 앞의 노상 카페에서 빵과 커피로 했다. 이제 그 분위기에도 익숙해졌다. 편안하다. 종업원과 간단한 눈인사도 나누고 담배를 나누어 피우기도 한다. 동네 꼬맹이 녀석 서너 명이 내 앞에 나타났다. 어떤 녀석은 장난기 어린 표정으로 싱글벙글하며 나를 쳐다본다. 그런가 하면 어떤 녀석은 심각한 표정이다. 눈도 깜박하지 않고 내 얼굴을 뚫어지라 쳐다본다.

그런데 뒤늦게 나타난 제법 덩치가 큰 녀석이 나에게 '부루스 리'(이소룡)라고 부른다. 내가 웃고만 있으니 인석이 제법 내 코앞까지 다가와 계속 '부루스 리'를 몇 번 외쳤다. 상황이 이러니 종업원도 그렇고 옆에 앉아 있는 다른 사람들도 다 내 얼굴만 쳐다본다. 나에게 뭔가 보여 달라는 신호다.

더 이상 뜸 들이지 말고 빨리 뚜껑을 열라는 은근한 압박이다. 재미있는 현상이 아닐 수 없다. 사실, 단독(單獨) 세계 배낭여행을 하다 보면 이 같은 경우를 더러 만난다. 때에 따라선 곤욕(困辱)을 치르는 경우도 있지만(인도, 영국 등에서), 대개는 기분 좋은 해프닝으로 끝난다. 다행히 나에겐 약간의 태권도 실력이 있기 때문이다.

군생활(軍生活) 3년 동안 익혀둔 선물이다. 대개는 이 친구들에게 기본 동작에 약간의 기술만 추가해 보여 주면 상황 끝! 한 마디로 효과 100%다. “와~~, 야~~, 예~~, 굿, 멋있다!, 최고다!!.” 등 한두 마디 찬사(讚辭)와 함께 환호(歡呼)가 쏟아지기 일쑤다. 손뼉까지 치는 경우도 적지 않다. 역시 한국의 태권도는 대단하다.

대체로 정복자(征服者) 침략자(侵略者)들은 손에 칼과 총을 들었다. 그들에게 무기 없는 싸움은 있을 수 없었다. 맨손은 패배(敗北)나 굴복(屈伏)을 뜻했기 때문이다. 그런 살상적(殺傷的) 무기(武器) 문화에만 익숙한 그들이 맨손으로 싸우는 모습을 보고 신기해하는 것은 어쩌면 당연한지 모른다. 그런 의미에서 '부루스 리(이소룡)는 우리 아세아인(亞世亞人)들, 특히 한국의 태권도와 관련하여 한국의 이미지 상승에 큰 몫을 한 셈이다.

군복무(軍服務) 3년, 그때 배운 태권도가 세계 여행 중 간간(間間)이 그 실력을 보여 줄 때가 올 줄이야 누가 알았겠는가! <계속>

People met on my backpacking 102

- I willingly had to play the role of the Bruce Lee -

At about 8pm, two Japanese backpackers checked into our hostel. One was a college student and the other was an office worker. Very glad to see them, Asian guys.

What they surprised me was that they had already backpacked for fifteen days in Cape Town and Johannesburg in S.Africa and had just arrived in Casa from JoBurg. That meant that they finished traveling from the southernmost to the northernmost of the African continent.

Great! I thought they were not beginners in backpacking and it was right. In other words, they had many backpacking experiences. Anyway, I was envious of them. First, I had not tried it yet. Second, compared to our young guys in Korea.

.

The fact that where there were many young people who travel the world has been directly related to the national power of the country. It’s because young guys who have looked around the world must be one step ahead of other young guys (frogs in the well) personally and nationally. It’s the common point of the so-called advanced countries or superpowers.

I used to ask questions when I meet world backpackers (early 20s of Westerners and Japanese). About their travel expenses and how to prepare for it. The reason I asked them was because they were fundamentally different from the way of our life patterns. So, I asked these guys the same thing. Their answers were always short and simple. They usually spend a year on a job and set themselves up for travel. They don’t ask their parents to help. Instead, they think it’s their own responsibility and rights to do it.

It was up to them to go backpacking around the world. They didn’t need parental consent. This phenomenon, in some ways, seemed to have no humanity among them. But their kids were growing up to be real adults educated from their parents. When I talked to Japanese guys, I often mistook them for Westerners. The Japanese looked like very Westerners. Their thinking system was similar to Western rationalism, pragmatism, and individualism.

For example, their strict personal responsibility principle was strict. This rule had been applied everywhere. One time, I ate at a restaurant with a Japanese family (father and two sons) in Klang, Malaysia. When they paid for the food, each paid what they ate. It wasn't a matter of good or bad. One thing was clear: the countries that had adopted such each cost-paying principle have been the first-class powers that dominate the world order today.

The fact that they have been independent in their thinking and behavior. They were learning something important for their future all over the world like that. Even today, they see, hear, and learn the world they never see or can’t experience in a small world. I have always felt something when I have a conversation with people around the world. I mean the superpowers are never built up in a day. For them, there are a lot of young people who learn the world in a subjective and independent way of thinking.

At 9pm, Algerian guy, Cahiril came in. We’ve already been together for three days and had many conversations. He used to ask me where I visited today. When I told him about what happened on the street or what happened at the theater, he could just laugh and added a few words of advice. Today I told him I went to the Hasan ll Mosque and he was glad to hear me. He surely was one of them I met most thoughtful and kind guys in Morocco.

After a while, the Japanese guys came back into our room. They joined us but the mood was not so good. The problem was their English pronunciation. When they spoke English, Cahiril couldn’t get it at once and always asked me again what they had said. With this kind of mood, the Japanese quietly stepped away. I didn’t know the reason why they went out. Maybe it hurt their feelings, or they didn’t want others feel uncomfortable. Anyway, sometimes I saw this kind of behavior of Japanese. Of course, there were quite a few Japanese guys who actively participated in the conversation regardless of their language skills.

Cahiril wanted to know more about Korea. He asked me about the relationship between Korea and Japan. About my view of history and nationalism. I thought that national consciousness, nationalism itself was not a problem at all. However, I told him if we overdid something like that, it became a problem. In other words, I said the closed nationalism overwhelms open nationalism. I said that neither nationalism nor religious ideology was not an exception. He agreed with me with blue face. It’s because his country Algeria was in turmoil by religious ideology (religious conflict near civil war).

This morning, I again had bread and coffee for my breakfast in the street cafe in front of the hostel. Being used to the atmosphere and felt comfortable. Sharing a simple greeting to each other at the cafe and enjoying tobacco. Then three or four of the local boys appeared in front of me. Some looked at me with a playful look and a smile. Others were serious facial expressions. Some kids looked at my face without blinking. However, a big guy who just showed up approached me with saying, “Bruce Lee”. And standing up to my nose and kept shouting ‘Bruce Lee’ again. Well, he made everybody around me look at me.

It was as if I should show them something of Taekwondo. It was another kind of funny phenomenon to me. Actually, I had a few cases like this when I was backpacking around the world alone. In some cases(in India, England, etc.). But usually, it ended up with a pleasant mood. Fortunately, you know, I learned Taekwondo basic skills while in the army for three years. So, usually, I only needed to show them a little skill in basic operation! Bingo! In a word, the effect was 100%. “Wow~~, Yhe~~, Good, perfect, great...” with a few praises from them and cheers were often poured out to me. Korean Taekwondo was very popular with them. It certainly made me stand tall in front of them as a Korean.

Generally speaking, the conquistadors or invaders held swords and guns in their hands. Without them, they couldn't fight. It meant bare hands defeated and succumbing. It’s perhaps natural for them I mean they were only accustomed to such a lethal weapon culture. In that sense, 'Bruce Lee (Lee So-ryong) has contributed to the rise of Korea in relation to our Asian people, especially Korea's Taekwondo.

Serving in the military for 3 years, I never dreamed that the time would come when the Taekwondo I learned at that time would show off my skills while backpacking around the world!
