(공원에는 사기꾼들이 많다고 했는데...)

- 사기꾼에 휘말려 들기 전의 상황 1 -

모로코의 카사블랑카 시내에 있는 모하메드 5세 공원에서 일어났던 이야기

.

아침 일찍 숙소를 나왔다. 아침마다 그러하듯 오늘도 게스트하우스 앞의 카페로 직행, 따끈한 차 한 잔으로 시작한다. 현지인들과의 가벼운 인사는 일상사(日常事)처럼 됐다. 낯익은 사람들이 꽤 생겼다는 뜻. 오늘따라 날씨가 유난히 좋다. 뭔가 좋은 일이 생길 것 같은 예감이다. 하늘엔 구름 한 점 없는 것이 마치 에메랄드빛과 사파이어 빛을 섞어 놓은 듯하다. 이 같은 현상은 지중해성(地中海性) 기후로 북아프리카 지역의 공통이지만 이곳 카사블랑카의 날씨는 특히 더 아름다운 것 같다.

발걸음은 나도 모르게 마호메트 5세 공원으로 향하고 있었다. 어제 이곳을 잠깐 들려보았지만, 뭔가의 여운(餘韻)이 남았기 때문이다. 나선 김에 오늘은 유엔 광장을 거처 아랍 연맹 공원 등 카사블랑카의 유명 공원들을 다 가 볼 생각이다. 이곳 마호메트 5세 공원을 걷다 보면 마치 산림욕(山林浴)을 하는 듯한 상쾌한 기분을 느낄 수 있다. 아름답고 다양한 수목(樹木)과 화초(花草)로 가득하기 때문이다. 유럽의 여느 공원 못지않은 넓고 아름다운 매력 만점의 공원이 아닐 수 없다.

물론 공원의 어두운 면이 없는 건 아니다. 어디나 그러하지만, 공원엔 부랑아(浮浪兒) 노숙자(露宿者)등 나쁜 사람들도 많이 모이는 곳이기 때문이다. 그것을 증명이라도 하듯 이곳 공원을 걷다 보면 여기저기서 불쑥 튀어나와 손을 내미는 사람들이 한둘이 아니다. 벤치에 앉았다 하면 금방 옆에 누군가가 와 앉는다. 그러나 이 정도는 양호(良好)한 편이다. 상당히 말쑥하게 차려입은 젊은이들이 바짝 달라붙어 괴롭힐 땐 정말 대책이 안 선다. 진(津)이 다 빠질 정도다.

이들에겐 주로 상냥한 말투와 매너로 접근한다는 공통점이 있다. 공원 내를 걷다 보면 전후좌우(前後左右) 여기저기서 '헤이(hey)' '굿모닝(Good morning)' '헬로우 마이 브라더(Hello, my brother)' 메아이 헬프 유 서?(May I help you, sir?)' 혹은 '자파니?(Japanese?)' '아유 저패니?(Are you japanee?)' 또는 “헤이 지나(Hey China.)” “아유 지나? 자파니(Are you China? Japanee?)” 등의 소리가 귓전에 때린다. 이는 특히 혼자 다니는 동양계 이방인(異邦人)에게 집중적으로 쏟아지는 현상이다.

다행히 나는 이 같은 환경에 어느 정도 익숙한지라 일일이 대응을 안 하면서도 무난히 헤쳐나가는 편이다. 물론, 때에 따라선 담담(淡淡)한 표정으로, 혹은 단호(斷乎)한 행동으로 대응할 필요도 있다. 암튼, 얻는 것이 있으면 잃는 것도 있는 법(trade off), 나름대로 세계 배낭여행을 즐겁고, 보람되게 하려면 상황대처능력(狀況對處能力)은 필수(必須)! <계속>

- A situation before being dragged into a fraud -

- Today's story is about the Mohammed V Park in Casablanca, Morocco. -

As always, I went out early in the morning. I went straight to the cafe in front of my guesthouse today. I started the day with a cup of hot tea as usual. The light greetings of "Hi." with the locals became like everyday life to me. That meant I had quite a few people familiar with me. However, the weather was exceptionally good today. I felt like something was going to happen. It seemed as if there was no cloud in the sky, it was like mixing emerald light with sapphire light. This was a Mediterranean climate, common in North Africa, but the weather here in Casablanca was especially beautiful.

My steps were unconsciously heading towards the Mahmed 5th Park. It’s because I dropped in here yesterday for a while but felt something amazing there. Well, anyway, then I was planning to visit all the famous parks of Casablanca, including the Arab League Park through UN Plaza after here. If I walked through this park, I could feel the refreshing feeling of being in a deep forest. It was filled with beautiful and varied trees and plants. It was a park that was as big and attractive as any park in Europe.

Of course, as everywhere else, this park had also a dark side. For example, a public park was a place where many strange guys such as street roughs and tricksters gather. As proved it, there were not a couple of guys who walked around the park here and there and came up to me. As soon as I sat on the bench, they sat on next to me. But this was not a big deal to me. The serious problem was when middle - age gentlemen in fairly good clothes cling to me. It was a real headache problem.

Fortunately, I was familiar with this kind of environment thanks to many backpacking experiences. So, I didn’t respond to them every time, but I was easily able to get through. Of course, sometimes I needed to respond with a kind look or with strict action. Anyway, there was something to lose if I had something to gain. I tried to make my world backpacking trip enjoyable and rewarding, considering this principle (trade off). Yes, it’s very important to make the ability to deal with crisis situations.
