- 사기꾼에 걸려든 이야기 4 -

(죽기 아니면 까무러치기로~)

조카란 녀석은 시종일관(始終一貫) 선글라스를 쓰고 앉은 채 말이 없다. 술도 많이 안 마신다. 도대체 인석의 정체는 뭘까. 분명 대학생 면모를 보이는 건 틀림없는데. 순간순간 의문도 일고 답답도 했지만 더 이상 의심을 않기로 했으니 무시해 버렸다. 한편 나세르는 여전히 대화 중간중간에 나에게 아무 부담 갖지 말고 오늘 저녁 파티에 간다, 혹은 안 간다의 단답(單答)만 내리라는 것이다. 갈등의 폭은 걷잡을 수 없는 상황. 만약 그의 말이 진실이라면 나는 진짜 모로코인의 전통문화를 체험하는 행운아(幸運兒)가 되는 것이고, 만에 하나 범죄에 걸려든다면 이건 생각만 해도 너무나 끔찍한 일이기 때문이다.

나는 대답을 못 주고 계속 망설였다. 맥주를 더 시켰더니 이 친구 왈(曰), 더 이상 마시면 안 된단다. 7시의 파티는 자기를 위한 것이기 때문에 본인이 술을 마시고 들어가면 예법(禮法)에 어긋난다는 것이다. 그리고 조카는 아직 학생이니 더 이상 술을 마시면 안 된다는 말도 덧붙였다. 이 친구 말은 너무나 그럴 듯해서 의심(疑心)의 여지가 없었다. 마치 나는 이곳 아프리카 땅에서 한국의 오랜 미풍양속(美風良俗) 가운데 하나인 집안 어른에 대한 존중 문화를 보는 듯했다.

술값을 계산하고 자리를 일어나는 순간 나세르는 나에게 다시 물었다. 만약 내가 시간이 있어 7시 파티에 갈 마음이 있으면 지금 얘기를 해 달라는 것이다. 그래야 자기 이모에게 미리 연락하여 손님을 맞을 준비를 할 수 있다는 것이다. 그것도 듣고 보니 일리가 있었다. 결국, 나는 쫓기는 듯한 심리적 갈등 속에 그의 제안(提案)을 뿌리치지 못하고 "OK" 하고 말았다. 이때의 심정(心情)은 속된 말로 ‘죽기 아니면 까무러치기다.’였다.

“그래 호랑이를 잡으려면 호랑이 굴에 들어가야지. 모험과 도전 없는 성취감은 있을 수 없다. 암, 그렇고말고.” 흥분과 긴장이 교차하는 순간이었다. 그때 나세르는 마치 기다렸다는 듯이 내 말이 떨어지기가 무섭게 자기 조카에게 뭐라고 얘길 했다. 그리고 인석은 곧 자리에서 일어나 나가 버렸다. 그리고 나세르는 내게 자기만 따라오면 된다며 밖으로 나왔다. 조카는 어딜 갔느냐고 물었더니 자기가 이모 집에 미리 보냈단다. 새 손님이 늘었으니 가서 이모에게 알리고 같이 준비하도록 시켰다는 것이다. 역시 의심의 여지가 없는 말인 듯싶었다.

한 10여 분을 걸었을까, 나세르가 갑자기 나에게 US$ 100불이 있느냐고 묻는다. 전혀 생각지 못했던 질문이었다. 나에겐 항상 비상금(非常金)으로 20불짜리 석 장과 10불짜리 두 장의 캐시가 있었다. 왜 그러느냐고 물었더니 이 친구 말이 또한 그럴 듯했다. 즉 모로코의 관례상(冠禮床) 친구 집에 첫 방문을 할 땐 고급 양주(洋酒) 한 병과 예쁜 꽃을 한 다발 사 가야 하는데 자기에겐 아까 말한 대로 환전(換錢)을 못 해서 미국 달러가 없기 때문이란다. 역시 듣고 보니 그것도 이상할 게 없었다. 나는 더 이상 묻는 건 오히려 어색할 것 같아서 그만두었다.

바로 주머니에서 캐시를 다 꺼냈다. 맞춰보니 85불. 1불짜리 몇 장과 모로코 돈 다르함까지 몽땅 꺼내 보태어 주었다. 이처럼 나는 마치 그의 최면(催眠)에 걸린 양 그의 요구대로 움직이고 있었다.

이는 일단 한 번 믿기로 하면 전적(全的)으로 신뢰(信賴)하는 나의 성격 탓이다. 아무튼, 내 돈을 거머쥔 이 친구는 조금 더 걸어가더니 멈췄다. 길 건너(도로 폭 20m정도)의 상점을 가리키며 거기서 양주를 사 온다는 것이다. 상점에 진열된 것을 보니 분명 수입품을 취급하는 곳이 틀림없었다. 이 친구와 함께 상점에 들어가려고 하니 나보고 그냥 밖에서 기다리란다. 이유인즉슨 외국인은 저런 술집에서 술을 거래할 수 없다는 것이다. 걸리면 큰일난단다. 역시 그럴듯했다. 그는 얼른 사 올 테니 잠시만 기다리라며 상점 안으로 쏙 들어갔다. <계속>

-Challenging should be a do-or-die affair. - 4

His nephew said nothing at all but sitting on the chair with his sunglasses on. He didn’t drink much. What on earth is this guy’s identity? A real college student? Strange enough but I just ignored him. On the other hand, Nasser was still in the midst of the conversation and didn’t have any burden on me. My conflicts were in a situation where I couldn’t get out of hand. If his words were true, I would be a lucky guy who experienced the real traditional Moroccan culture, and if not? It could be a horrible thing to even think about.

I couldn't answer him and kept hesitating. I ordered more beer, but he said, "We can't drink anymore." Since the party at 7 o'clock was for him, he shouldn't drink just before back home because it was against their etiquette. And he added that his nephew was still a student, so he shouldn't drink anymore. This guy's words were so plausible that no needed to doubt him. It was as if I were watching a culture of respect for the elders of the family, one of Korea's long-standing beautiful customs. Not in Korea but in the land of Africa.

Soon after I got up after paying for the drink, Nasser asked me again if I had time to join him going to the party at 7 o'clock. If I said Ok, then he said that he could contact his aunt in advance for preparing to greet a new guest. That made sense, too. In the end, I couldn't resist his proposal and "OK" in the psychological conflict that seemed to be pursued. The sentiment of mine at this time was in a word, “Challenging should be a do-or-die affair.”

Said to myself, "Ok, if I want to catch a tiger, I have to go into the tiger's den. No challenge, no gain, of course." It was a moment of excitement and tension. At that time, Nasser said something to his nephew soon after my words fell out as if he had waited. And then his nephew soon got out of his seat and left. And Nasser came out to me, saying, "All you have to do is follow me." When I asked him where his nephew went, he replied he sent him to his aunt's house in advance. Since a new customers visited, his nephew went to inform his aunt and made her prepare together. It seemed to be a word without doubt.

Walked for about 10 minutes, Nasser suddenly asked me if I had US$100. I was surprised at his asking. As usual I kept three $20 cash and two $10 cash in emergency funds. When asked him why he needed that money then he said, "Don't worry. It's nothing." He said to me, "It's customary to buy a bottle of high-quality liquor and a bunch of pretty flowers when visiting a friend's house for the first time in Morocco. But he told me that he didn't have US dollars because he couldn't exchange money. Well, it seemed to me nothing strange about him. No needed for me to doubt him.

I took all the cash out of my pocket right away. I collected some dollars kept in my pocket with a few of 85-dollar bills. I even took out all the Moroccan money I had and gave it to him. Like this, I was moving according to his demands as if I were hypnotized by him.

Thinking of it now, it was a kind of my fixed personality, which I trust all once I decide to trust. Anyway, this guy who grabbed my money walked a little further and stopped walking. He pointed to a shop across the street (about 20 meters wide) and told me that he would buy liquor from there. It looked like an imported liquor selling shop. I was going to enter the shop with him, but he told me to just wait outside. The reason was that foreigners were not allowed to buy any licquor in such kind of shops. He said I would be in big trouble if I got caught by the cop. I just trusted him whatever he said. He then quickly jumped into the shop after told me to wait there for a while.
