- 사기꾼에 걸려든 멍청한 이야기 6 -

(이 와중에도 M.TV 카메라 앞에 섰다.)

여태껏, 짬나는 대로 자유롭게 세계 배낭여행을 했지만, 이 정도로 멍청한 짓에 말려든 적은 없었다. 아니 이런 경우를 들어 본 적도 없었다. 그런데 나는 오늘 이렇게 얼간이가 되고 말았다. 굳이 변명하자면 그들의 표현대로 말끝마다 붙이는 '마이 브라더'란 말과 한국을 좋아하는 듯한 표정에 약했던 것이다. 교언영색(巧言令色)을 언중유언(言中有言)쯤으로 치부(置簿)했으면 됐는데, 그만 판단력이 흐려져 언중유향(言中有響)으로 받아들인 것이다. 결국, 스스로 해의포화(解義抱火:옷을 벗고 불에 뛰어들다), 혹은 비아부화(飛蛾赴火:나방이 불로 날아들다)를 한 셈이다.

굳이 변명하자면, 나는 그가 던진 결정적 한 마디에 넘어간 것이다. 즉, “이건 한국인 친구에게 보낼 엽서인데, 여기에 한국어로 주소를 좀 써줄 수 있느냐?” 나는 이 부탁을 뿌리치지 못했다. 아니 뿌리칠 수가 없었다.

나는 흔히 외국에서‘메이드 인 코리아’만 보면(오늘날에도 그렇지만 당시엔 눈물이 날 정도로 감격, 아니 실제로 눈물이 핑 돈 적이 한두 번이 아니다.) 그것이 새것이든 중고(中古)이든, 가령 자동차나 냉장고 등…. 하찮은 중고 신발에서부터 가방 옷가지 등까지(파키스탄 등)…그것이 우리 한국산(韓國産)이라는 것 하나 때문에 가슴이 찡하는 감격을 느끼곤 한다. 그런데 하물며 한글을 써달라는 이 같은 부탁을 받았을 때야 오죽하랴. 사람을 의심하자면 끝이 없는 법, 그래서 이런 말도 있지 않은가. 배중지사영(杯中之蛇影:의심을 품으면 끝이 없다). 그러나 어쨌든 나의 경조부박(輕佻浮薄: 침착성 결여와 가벼운 행동)은 구명도생(苟命徒生:구차하게 사는 삶)하는 자의 잔꾀조차 감지하지 못한 것이다. 자괴지심(自愧之心)인 이유다.

일언가파(一言可破:한 마디로), 그들이 말하는 '마이 브라더'는 우의(友誼)라거나 우애(友愛)를 나누자는 진의(眞意)가 아니었다. 교활한 위선에 불과했다. 내 진작 교천언심(交淺言深:사귄 지 얼마 되지 않은데 심중의 말을 함부로 지껄임)을 경계했어야 했는데…. 암든, 천박스럽고 가증스런 녀석들, 호구지책(糊口之策)으로 고작 외국인 등이나 처먹는 일을 업(業)으로 삼다니…. 세계를 정복하고 천하를 호령하던 너희 조상들의 의기(義氣)와 기개(氣槪)는 다 어디로 갔단 말이냐. 너희들의 소행은 조상의 은혜를 저버리고 나아가 배신하는 행위(背恩忘德)와 전혀 다르지 않다. 부끄럽지도 않은가. 암튼, 내 너희를 반드시 잡고야 말겠다. 교아절치(咬牙切齒:이를 갈 만큼 분하다)!치사한 놈들!

저녁 8시쯤 알제리인 친구, 크헤릴(알제리 난민, 전직 수학교사, 당시엔 모로코,튀니지에 알제리 난민들이 많았다)이 왔다. 그는 나를 보자마자 무슨 일이 있었느냐고 물었다. 그에게 오늘 있었던 일을 소상히 얘기했다. 그런데 이 친구 엉뚱하게도 내 얘기를 다 듣고 난 뒤 대뜸 내 어깨를 두들기며 나보고 행운아란다. 그들은 내 돈만 빼앗았지 몸에 상해(傷害)를 가하진 않았다는 것이다. 차라리 그렇게 고도(高度)의 지능범(知能犯)들에게 당하는 게 낫지 어설픈 불량배들에게 걸리면 반드시 사람도 해치거나 죽인다는 것이다. 실제로 그런 일들을 본다고 했다. 이런, 세상에! 또다시 모골(毛骨)이 송연(悚然)해진다. 이 친구의 말을 듣고 보니 아닌 게 아니라 천만다행이란 생각도 들긴 드는데….

그도 그럴 것이 일단 나는 그들을 믿은 터라 그들이 가자는 대로 졸졸 따라갔으니…. 그야말로 그들이 마음만 먹으면 무슨 짓인들 못 했겠는가. 그렇다. 난 어리석기 짝이 없는 짓을 하고 만 것이다. 지자불혹(智者不惑:사물의 이치를 알면 잘 속지 않는다)이라 했거늘…. 이 친구는 내 침대 위에 놓인 그 잘 포장된 술병을 확인하더니 피식 웃는다. 프랑스산 포도주인데 가격은 1~2$짜리란다. 쓴웃음이 나지 않을 수 없었다.

그런데 갑자기 호스텔 주인이 우리 방에 들어왔다. 그리고 하는 말이 지금 모로코 M.TV에서 나와 인터뷰를 하러 온다는 것이다. 아니 이건 또 무슨 뚱딴지같은 소린가. TV 인터뷰라니. 내용인즉슨, M.TV 방송국에서 아시안 배낭족과 인터뷰를 하고 싶은데 그런 여행자가 있느냐고 문의가 와서 있다고 했다는 것이다. 나와 일본인 친구를 두고 한 말이다. 그러자 잠시 후 진짜 라운지에서 어수선한 소리가 나기 시작했다. 함께 나가 보니 제작진들이 들어와 조명을 설치하는 등 분주하다. 이야말로 아닌 밤중에 홍두깨 아닌가. PD가 내게 다가와 인사를 한다. 관광 홍보용 스팟 뉴스물을 제작하는데 응해 주면 고맙겠다며 메모 쪽지를 건네준다. 내용은 다음과 같다.

“모로코는 아름다운 나라입니다. 특히 카사블랑카는 여행하기에 가장 좋은 곳이며, Casa사람들 또한 매우 친절하고 관대해서 좋습니다. 이곳에 오니 숙소도 충분하고 모든 것이 아주 편리하고 안전합니다.”

PD는 이 내용을 영어로 말하지 말고 자국어(한국어)로 해 달란다. 자막 처리되기 때문이란다. 그리고 방송은 3일 후에 나간단다. 참으로 어이가 없다. 도대체 어찌 된 영문인가. 마치 잘 짜인 한 편의 드라마? 혹시 처음부터 이 순간까지 각본에 의한 연출? 그렇지 않고야 어떻게 이처럼 사건이 척척 이어진단 말인가? 하여간 뭐에 홀린 기분이다. 그토록 아름답고 친절하다는 당신네 나라에서 나는 이렇게 수모를 당하고 비분강개(悲憤慷慨:분통이 복받침)하고 있는데 어떻게 이런 좋은 말을 해 달란 말인가?

아무리 생각해도 마음이 내키지 않았다. 오히려 울화가 치밀었다. 오늘 있었던 얘기를 PD에게 다 털어놓고 사양(辭讓)하고 싶은 마음뿐이다. 옆에 서 있던 크헤릴 친구가 내 표정을 보면서 나에게 하는 말은 간단했다. 지난 일은 다 잊어버리고 그냥 응해 주라는 것이다. 왜냐면 모로코인들은 민족주의 성향이 너무 강하고 독특하기 때문이란다. 그들에겐 나쁜 점을 지적해 줘봐야 오히려 그들의 기분만 상하게 할 뿐, 결국 좋을 것이 하나도 없다는 것이다. 그는 재차 나에게 오늘 일은 다 잊어버리란다. 결국, 나는 이 친구의 말을 받아들이기로 했다.

이렇게 해서 나는 마음에도 없는 TV 카메라와 조명 앞에 선 것이다. 세 번을 반복한 뒤에야 촬영을 끝냈다. 물론, 일본인 친구도 응했다. 참으로 희괴망측(稀怪罔測)한 체험이 아닐 수 없다. 이 방송이 나갈 때쯤이면 그 녀석들은 어디에선가 TV에 나오는 나의 모습을 볼 것이다. 그리고 끽끽 대며 비웃고 조롱할 것이다. 정말 생각하면 할수록 화도 나고 한심한 생각이 든다. 아, 코리언의 수치! 아무튼, 크헤릴의 말에 의하면 그들은 100$ 정도면 최소한 몇 주(週) 이상은 먹고 산단다. 그들은 돈이 다 떨어질 때까지 공원에 나타나지도 않지만 나타난다 해도 같은 장소엔 안 나타날 테니 그들을 잡으려는 생각은 버리는 게 좋다는 충언이었다. <계속>

Because I was weak with their expression "My Brother" and their expression of liking Korea. It would have been better if I took his words as a joke, but I didn't. The problem was that I was deceived by the decisive words he said. "This is a postcard to send to a Korean friend, can you write an address in Korean here?" I couldn't resist his request. No, I couldn't shake it off.

I used to be very moved when I saw the brand of 'Made in Korea' during my trip abroad. I actually even cried. Whether it's new or old, for example cars or refrigerators. From petty second-hand shoes to bags and clothes (such as in Pakistan). Therefore, it was natural for me to feel happy when he asked me to write Korean on his post card. As a result, I was foolish enough to take his word too easily.

I belatedly learned that the "My Brother" they cried out for was not a friendship or a genuine intention to share friendship. I should have been wary of talking too much about personal matters with the first person I met. Anyway, I thought they were very servile and shallow. It was because they were professionals who lived by deceiving foreigners. Because they clearly had a great ancestor who conquered the world. They have sinned against the honor of their ancestors. Anyway, I made up my mind to catch them.

Around 8 p.m., my Algerian friend, Kheril, returned to our guesthouse. He was an Algerian refugee and a former math teacher. At that time, there were many Algerian refugees in Morocco and Tunisia. As soon as he saw me, he asked me what had happened. I told him what happened today in detail. However, after hearing all of my stories, he suddenly tapped me on the shoulder and said I was lucky. Because they only took my money and didn't attack my body. If they were clumsy bullies, I would certainly have suffered more. Even more, they could have killed me. He said there were actually such incidents. Oh, my God! I felt terrible again.

Then suddenly the hostel owner came into our room. He said that the reporters of M.TV would come to have interview me. “What? You must be joking. Then a little later, the staff of the M.TV came in. They installed lights in the lounge. The PD came up to me and said hello. He said he would appreciate it if I would agree to make spot news for tourism. He handed me a note. The contents were as follows.

“Morocco is a beautiful country. Especially, Casablanca is the best place to travel for me and I like the Casa people because they are also very kind and generous. When I came here, there were enough rooms for staying and everything is very convenient and safe.”

The PD asked me to do this in Korean instead of speaking English. Because it's subtitled. And the interview would be aired three days later, he said. It was absolutely ridiculous. What the hell was going on? It was like a well-organized drama. I couldn't understand the situation anyway. It was because I was deceived by a swindler in your country. So, I couldn't say such a good thing.

The Algerian friend, who was standing next to me, looked at my expression and told me briefly. He asked me to forget about the past. In the end, I decided to accept his words.

This is how I unintentionally stood in front of the TV camera and the lights. I finished filming after repeating three times. Of course, a Japanese friend also filmed. It was truly a bizarre experience. By the time this broadcast aired out, they would watch me on TV somewhere. And they might laugh at me and mock me. The more I thought about it, the more I got angry. This was definitely a disgrace to Koreans! Anyway, according to Kheryl, they could live on for at least a few weeks at around $100. He said they wouldn't even show up at the park until they ran out of money. Even if they would appear in the park, they would never appear in the same place. So, he told me just forget it the idea of arresting them.
