Pandemonium breaks out as an unexpected third reader, a 'professor' from Petersburg, immediately takes the stage in his place. Apparently delighted by the disorder, the new orator launches into a frenzied tirade against Russia, shouting with all his might and gesticulating with his fist. He is eventually dragged off stage by six officials, but he somehow manages to escape and returns to briefly continue his harangue before being dragged off again. Supporters in the audience rush to his aid as a schoolgirl takes the stage seeking to rouse oppressed students everywhere to protest.
  
  In the aftermath, Pyotr Stepanovich (who was mysteriously absent from the reading) seeks to persuade a traumatized Julia Mikhaylovna that it wasn't as bad as she thinks and that it is essential for her to attend the ball. He also lets her know that the town is ringing with the news of another scandal: Lizaveta Nikolaevna has left her home and fiancé and gone off to Skvoreshniki with Stavrogin.
  
  Despite the disaster of the reading, the ball goes ahead that evening, with Julia Mikhaylovna and Andrey Antonovich in attendance. Many of the respectable public have chosen not to attend but there is an increased number of dubious types, who make straight for the drinking area. Hardly anyone is dancing, most are standing around waiting for something to happen and casting curious glances at the Von Lembkes.

  그 직후에 Pyotr Stepanovich는 신비하게도 낭독회에 불참하였다. 충격을 받은 Julia Mikhaylovna를, 사태는(it) 그녀가 생각하는 것만큼 그렇게 나쁘지 않으며 그녀가 무도회에 참석하는 것이 필수적이라고 설득시키려고 한다. 그는 또한 도시가 또 하나의 추문(scandal) 소식으로 시끄럽다는 것을 그녀에게 알려준다: Lizaveta Nikolaevna가 그녀의 집과 약혼자를 버리고 Stavrogin과 함께 Skvoreshniki 저택으로 갔다는 것이다.
  
  詩 낭독의 파멸에도 불구하고 그날 저녁에 무도회는 Julia Mikhaylovna와 Andrey Antonovich가 참석한 가운데 진행된다. 상당한 지위에 있는 많은 사람들(respectable public)은 참석하지 않았지만 많이 늘어난 수의 수상한 사람들(types)이 술이 차려져 있는 곳으로 직행한다. 아무도 거의 춤을 추지 않고 뭔가 일어나기를 기대하면서 둘러서서 Von Lembkes에게 호기심 어린 눈길을 던진다.

  Stepan Trofimovich의 온후하고 추상적이고 모호하고 무해한 '담론'은 그의 아들 Peter Stepanovich이 이끄는 그룹에서는 냉소적이고 고의적이고 파괴적인 활동으로 변질된다. Stepan Trofimovich의 神과 국가와 인민에 대한 자유로운 개념은 추악한 희롱으로 타락한다. 단순한 생각에 불과하였던 신성모독은 聖像(성상) 뒤에 죽은 쥐를 집어넣거나 성경 판매인의 자루 안에 淫畵(음화)를 숨겨놓는 신성모욕 행위로 바뀐다. 여성을 바르게 인정해 주지 않는 기독교에 대한 Stepan Trofimovich의 비판은 결혼을 자유롭게 조롱하는 것과, 도박에서 돈을 잃어서 남편으로부터 벌 받는 것을 '자유롭지 못하게' 겁을 내고 있는 젊은 여자를 납치하는 것으로 바뀐다. Stepan Trofimovich의 신성모독적인 말이 실제 행동으로 나타난다. 생각으로만 머물던 불경한 개념들이 구체적인 사악한 행동으로 나타나는 것이다.
  
  Peter Stepanovich의 조종을 받고 있는 Julia von Lembke 집단의 조악한 성분이 Stepan Trofimovich의 고매한 자유주의를 쳐부수고 이긴다. 그녀 주위에 모인 세력이 그녀의 통제력으로부터 빨리 빠져나가고 있는 사실에도 불구하고 Julia von Lembke는 그녀의 고매한 이상이 급진주의자들을 정복하게 될 것이라고 착각하고 있다. 그녀는 이들 전복세력은 아이들에 불과하다고 믿는다. 그녀는 이들의 악의 능력과 가공할 파괴력을 간과하고 있는 것이다. Julia von Lembke는 급진 사회주의자들은 순치와 화합과 협동이 불가능한 악령들이라는 사실을 인식하지 못함으로서 참담한 패배를 자초하고 만인의 웃음거리가 되는 것이다.
