When Liza demands the truth from Stavrogin, he replies that he was against the murder but knew it was going to happen and didn't stop the murderers. Liza rushes off in a frenzy, determined to get to the place of the murders to see the bodies. Stavrogin tells Pyotr Stepanovich to stop her, but Pyotr Stepanovich demands an answer. Stavrogin replies that it might be possible to say yes to him if only he were not such a buffoon, and tells him to come back tomorrow. Appeased, Pyotr Stepanovich pursues Liza, but the attempt to stop her is abandoned when Mavriky Nikolaevich, who has been waiting for her outside all night, rushes to her aid. He and Liza proceed to the town together in the pouring rain. At the scene of the murders an unruly crowd has gathered. By this time it is known that it is Stavrogin's wife who has been murdered, and Liza is recognized as 'Stavrogin's woman'. She and Mavriky Nikolaevich are attacked by drunk and belligerent individuals in the crowd. Liza is struck several times on the head and is killed.
  
  Most of society's anger for the night's events is directed toward Julia Mikhaylovna. Pyotr Stepanovich is not suspected, and news spreads that Stavrogin has left on the train for Petersburg. The revolutionary crew, however, are alarmed. They are on the point of mutiny until Pyotr Stepanovich shows them Lebyadkin's letter to Von Lembke. He points to their own undeniable involvement and tells them that Shatov is also determined to denounce them.

Mavriky Nikolaevich와 그녀는 쏟아지는 비 속에서 함께 시내로 간다. 살인 현장에는 통제 불능의 시민들이 모여 들었다. 이 때쯤에 피살자는 Stavrogin의 아내라는 것이 알려지고 Liza는 ‘Stavrogin의 여자’로 인식된다. 그녀와 Mavriky Nikolaevich는 군중 속에 있는 술에 취하고 호전적인 개인들에 의해 공격을 받는다. Liza는 머리를 몇 번 얻어맞고 살해된다.
  
  그날 밤 사건에 대한 사회의 분노는 Julia Mikhaylovna에게로 향한다. Pyotr Stepanovich는 의심을 받지 않고 Stavrogin은 기차로 Petersburg를 향해 떠났다는 뉴스가 퍼진다. 그러나 혁명대원들은 놀란다. 그들은 Pyotr Stepanovich가 Von Lembke에게 보내는 Lebyadkin의 편지를 보여줄 때까지 반란을 일으킬 시점에 와 있었다. Pyotr Stepanovich는 그들 자신의 부인할 수 없는 혁명참여(involvement)를 지적하고 Shatov가 그들을 반대할 뜻이 확고하다고 말한다.
  
  * 해설
  
  그 모임에서 Shigalyov는 미래사회의 본질에 관해서 차분하게 연설조로 전달한다. 그가 내리는 결론은―그의 평등사상과는 모순되게―미래 국가의 사회 10분의 9는 행복한 노예로 그리고 10분의 1은 이들을 지배하는 주인으로 구성될 것이라는 것이다. Shigalyov의 연설은 사회주의자들의 빛나는 소망의 深淵(심연)에 내재하는 악을 폭로하였기 때문에 그의 계획은 평등을 위해 회의에 참석한 회원들에게는 공공연한 모욕이 된다. Shigalyov는 연설 서두에서 “고대로부터 금년도까지 사회제도를 만드는 사람들은 모두 몽상가이고 거짓말쟁이이고, 바보였으며 이들은 자가당착적이었으며 자연과학에 대해서는 아무것도 이해하지 못하였고 저 인간이라고 부르는 이상한 동물이었습니다.”라며 평등세상을 위해 혁명하겠다는 사람들의 위선을 신랄하게 비판하고 있다. 이것은 물론 회의에 참석한 모든 사람들에게도 해당된다. 이런 모임 자체가 기만과 망상과 혼란을 증폭시키고 사회사상가들을 병들게 한다. 그러나 모임은 오합지중에게 단결과 응집을 가져오며 이런 응집력은 허무주의자, 무정부주의자, 사회주의자, 사회개혁가들에게 무기를 제공할 수 있다. 스탈린의 소련이나 모택동의 중공, 히틀러의 독일 같은 거대한 악의 제국도 세울 수 있는 무기를 제공할 수 있다.
