Eventually Kirillov seems to be overcome by the power of his desire to kill himself and despite his misgivings he hurriedly writes and signs the suicide note taking responsibility for the crimes, and runs into the next room. But there is no shot, and Pyotr Stepanovich cautiously follows him into the darkened room. A strange and harrowing confrontation ends with Pyotr Stepanovich fleeing in a panic. A shot rings out and he returns to find that Kirillov has shot himself through the head.
  
  Meanwhile, Stepan Trofimovich, oblivious to the unfolding horrors, has left town on foot, determined to take the high road to an uncertain future. Wandering along with no real purpose or destination, he is offered a lift by some peasants. They take him to their village where he meets Sofya Matveyevna, a travelling gospel seller, and he firmly attaches himself to her. They set off together but Stepan Trofimovich becomes ill and they are forced to take a room at a large cottage. He tells Sofya Matveyevna a somewhat embellished version of his life story and pleads with her not to leave him. To his horror, Varvara Petrovna suddenly turns up at the cottage. She has been looking for him since his disappearance, and her ferocity greatly frightens both Stepan Trofimovich and Sofya Matveyevna. When she realizes that he is extremely ill and that Sofya Matveyevna has been looking after him, her attitude softens and she sends for her doctor. A difficult reconciliation between the two friends, during which some painful events from the past are recalled, is effected. It becomes apparent that Stepan Trofimovich is dying and a priest is summoned.

  Peter는 인간은 모두 악인이라고 생각한다. 다만 어떤 사람들은 자신은 물론 모든 사람이 악당이라고 믿고 있다. 이런 사람들은 현명한 악당이라고 하겠다. 적어도 자신의 정체성에 대해서 어느 정도 인식을 할 수 있으니까 바보는 아닌 것이다. 반면에 어떤 사람은 악인이면서도 악인이 아니라고 확신하고 있는 것이다. 이런 인간은 바보 같은 악당이다. 사회주의자들도 악당이다. 그들은 일종의 이상주의자들로서 미래에 대한 밝은 희망을 가지고 있지만 그 희망이 그들을 조금도 선하게 만들지는 않는다. 오히려 자신을 善人(선인)으로 착각하게 만들어 코믹한 바보 악당이 된다.
  
  Peter는 바보가 아니기 때문에 사회주의자가 아니다. 그는 미래의 사회는 Virginsky와 Liputin과 Shigalyov의 환상이 아니고 인간의 실질적 심리의 바탕 위에서 건설되어야 한다는 것을 알고 있다. 뜬구름 같은 환상이 아니고 냉엄한 실재에 근거하여 국가를 세워야 한다는 것을 알고 있다. 그는 인류 역사는 끊임없는 쟁투라고 생각한다. 인류 역사의 실재는 인간의지의 치명적이고 끊임없는 결투라는 것이다. 그래서 Peter는 오직 힘만이 쟁투하는 인간들을 통합할 수 있다고 생각한다. 神과 같은 힘만이 쟁투하는 인간들을 심리적으로 복종시키고 순종시켜 사회주의 국가를 건설하고 운영할 수 있다는 것이다. 그는 Stavrogin에게서 사회 통합을 강요할 수 있는 최고의 의지와 神적인 힘을 본다. 그 힘은 몰도덕적이다.
