세계를 여행하다 보면 일본의 치밀하면서도 광범위한 문화사업에 놀란다. 물론 일본은 박물관이 많은 나라이다. 역사, 전쟁, 천문, 과학, 예술, 해양 등 거의 다루지 않는 분야가 없다. 따라서 일본 어디를 여행하든 그리 멀지 않은 곳에 박물관이 있음을 알 수 있다.

일본 재단(財團), 국제교류기금은 전 세계에 다 있다고 해도 과언이 아니지 싶다. 그만큼 일본의 문화력(文化力)은 크고 작은 다양한 모습으로 지구촌 곳곳에 뿌리를 내리고 있다. 소프트웨어로 표현되는 문화 강국 역시 하드웨어인 군사 강국처럼 하루아침에 이뤄지지 않는다는 걸 실감한다.

가령, 세계 여행 중 누구나 관심이 있으면 일본 정원, 박물관, 미술관, 다리, 일본 음식, 의상 등 일본을 상징하는 문화재(文化財)와 시설을 직접 볼 수 있다. 미국은 물론, 캐나다, 멕시코, 브라질, 인도, 호주, 인도네시아, 태국, 필리핀, 베트남, 말레이시아, 라오스, 캄보디아, 이태리, 프랑스, 스페인, 러시아, 중국, 이집트, 짐바브웨, 케냐, 남아공, 탄자니아, 우간다, 헝가리, 영국, 페루, 칠레 등 수 없는 나라에서 나는 직접 일본의 어떤 형태든 그들의 문화시설(文化施設) 혹은 지원사업장(支援事業場)을 볼 수 있었다.

1997년, 우간다 나이로비 국제공항에 내렸다. 입국 절차를 밟기 위해 줄을 서 있었다. 하얀 와이셔츠를 입은 중년의 남자가 사무실에서 나오더니 나에게 급히 다가와 허리를 굽혀 대뜸 일본어로 “곤니찌와. 우간다에 요꼬소.”라고 했다. 난 바로, “아임 낫 저팬니스. 아임 코리언.”이라고 했더니, 이 직원은 아주 쌀쌀한 표정으로 힐끗 쳐다본 뒤 자기 사무실로 되돌아갔다.

난 도저히 그의 태도를 이해할 수 없었다. 그의 표정과 태도는 모욕(侮辱)에 가까웠다. 입국 절차를 마친 뒤 그의 사무실로 갔다. 그 이유를 물었더니, 그는 간단히 말했다. 일본은 자기 나라에 많은 지원을 해주는 고마운 나라이기 때문에 반갑게 맞이한다는 것이다. 한국은 자기 나라에 도움을 준 적이 없다고 했다. 난 할 말이 없었다. 그 이후로 나는 왜 일본인들이 국제사회에서 좋은 대접을 받는지 알게 됐다.

이 같은 예는 한둘이 아니다. 안도라에서도, 마카오에서도, 리히텐슈타인에서도 수단, 모로코, 파키스탄, 인도, 괌, 페루…에서도 나는 우연히 일본인들과 함께 어울려 여행을 한 적이 있다. 난 수시(隨時)로 한국과 일본의 위상(位相)이 크게 다름을 느꼈다. 솔직히 숙소나 식당 등에서 내가 한국인임을 안 직원들로부터 언어나 태도 등으로 차별 대우를 받을 땐 약소국(弱小國)의 설움을 느끼지 않을 수 없었다. 나라는 무조건 부강(富強)해야 한다. 어쨌든, 일본인들은 분명히 세계로부터 일등 국민으로 대접을 받고 있었다.

오늘 나는 태국의 아유타야에서 또다시 일본의 저력(底力)을 실감했다. 부러웠다. 이곳에 있는 ‘일본인 마을 박물관’이 그랬다. 이곳은 약 400~500년 전, 아유타야 왕국 시절에 일본 상인(商人)들이 살았던 곳이다. 아유타야의 풍부한 유산(遺產)과 일본 상인들의 역할에 대한 자료를 보았다. 박물관은 벽에 거대한 아유타야 지도(地圖)를 걸어 놓았다. 이곳에는 일본 마을 사람들이 사용한 많은 공예품(工藝品)들도 전시되어 있었다. 일본 특유의 정갈하게 잘 꾸며진 정원(庭園)이 빠질 리 없다.

16세기에 일본인들이 아유타야에 정착(定着)한 이유와 그들의 삶과 활동을 자세히 보여주는 자료 등 볼거리가 많았다. 참으로 일본이 부럽고 돋보인 점은 동시대(同時代, 1500~1600)인 우리의 조선조(朝鮮朝)와 너무나 달랐기 때문이다. 조선조는 세상과 담을 쌓고, 허구한 날 양반 관료제의 폐단(弊端) 아래, 훈구파니 사림파니 붕당(朋黨)정치니 성리학이니 사문난적(斯文亂賊)이니 어쩌고저쩌고하면서 비겁하게 말싸움으로 날을 샐 때, 일본은 이미 서구(西歐) 세력과 더불어 아유타야에 진출해 교역사업(交易事業)을 한 것이다. 일본은 이미 500년 전에 국제정세를 꿰뚫어 보는 열린 마음과 혜안(慧眼)이 있었다.

현재도 그렇다. 일본은 항상 그러하듯 국제정세에 민감하다. 일본은 이미 미국과 함께 중공을 주적(主敵)으로 설정, 미·일 간 우주 협력은 물론, 양국(兩國)은 사이버 안보나 우주에서의 군사동맹으로 21세기판 안보 상황에 공동 대처하고 있다. 한마디로 일본은 세계 최강의 미국과 손을 잡고 공공의 적인 중공과 북한과 대처하면서 국익(國益)과 안보를 다지고 있다. 한편 한국은 어떤가? 400~500년 전의 조선조와 달라졌는가? 여전히 국제정세엔 눈을 감고, 현대판 붕당정치로 비겁하고 비루(鄙陋)한 말싸움질로 날을 새고 있진 않은가? 이런 나라와 누가 군사동맹을 맺겠는가? 적과 아군을 구분 못 하니, 거짓말을 입에 달고 사는 정치인은 오늘도 국민의 약 절반의 지지를 받으면서 보란 듯이 뉴스의 주인공이 되고 있다. 이런 나라가 과연 성(盛)할 수 있을까?

아무튼, 아유타야에는 포르투갈과 네덜란드 마을도 있다. 당대(當代)의 무역대국(貿易大國)을 상징한다. 그 효력(效力)은 지금도 유효(有效)해서 세계가 무시하지 못한다. 난 상상해 봤다. 가령 이곳에 ‘조선의 마을’도 있었다면, 얼마나 기분이 좋을까. 그래서 나는 예나 지금이나 한(限)없이 앞서가는 강대국(強大國)이 좋고 부럽다. 인도(印度)에도 당대의 강대국들이 남겨놓은 유물과 유적지가 많다. 영국은 말할 것도 없지만, 포르투갈이 세운 ‘올드 고아’가 있는가 하면 일본이 건설한 무기고(武器庫)와 창고 교도소 등이 보존돼 있다(안다만섬). 전세계(全世界)가 일본을 부러워하면서도 두려워하는 이유이다. 단, 한국만이 일본을 우습게 본다. 그럴만한 근거가 있는지 난 아직 모르겠다. 당신은??

People met on my backpacking120 – Japanese Village Museum in Ayuttaya

I was surprised by Japan's meticulous and extensive cultural work during my world trip. Of course, Japan is a country with many museums. There are various museums such as history, war, astronomy, science, art, and the ocean. Therefore, wherever I traveled in Japan, I could see that there were museums nearby.

I think the Japanese foundation, the International Exchange Fund, is all over the world. As such, Japan's cultural power is taking root throughout the world in various forms, large and small. I realized that the cultural powerhouse expressed in software is not achieved overnight like the military powerhouse, which is hardware.

For example, anyone can easily see Japanese cultural assets and facilities symbolizing Japan, such as Japanese gardens, museums, art galleries, bridges, Japanese food, and costumes, while traveling around the world. I've been able to see their cultural facilities or supportive workplaces in any form of Japan directly in many countries. The United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, Brazil, India, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, China, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Hungary, Britain, Peru, Chile, etc.

I got off at Nairobi International Airport in Uganda in 1997. I was standing in line to go through immigration counter. Then a middle-aged man in a white shirt came out of his office and hurried up to me, bent down, and suddenly said in Japanese, "Hello. Welcome to Uganda." I told him right away. "I'm not a Japanese. I'm Korean." Then he looked at me with a very chilly look on his face and went back to his office.

I've never had this kind of experience. His expression and manner were more of an insult to me. I went to his office after completing my entry process. When I asked him why, he simply said, " Japan is a grateful country that gives a lot of support to my country, so we welcome them. However, S. Korea has never helped my country. That' it." I had nothing to say. Since then, I have learned why Japanese people are treated well in the international community.

There are many examples like this. Andorra, Macau, Liechtenstein, Sudan, Morocco, Pakistan, India, Guam, Peru, etc. In these countries, I happened to travel with the Japanese. I often felt that the status of Korea and Japan was greatly different. To be honest, if employees at accommodations and restaurants knew I was Korean, they treated me differently with language and attitude. At times like this, I felt the sorrow of a small country a lot. My opinion is that Korea must be rich and strong. Anyway, the Japanese were clearly being treated as the first class people in the world.

Today, I realized Japan's great potential again in Ayutthaya, Thailand. So envious of them. The Japanese Village Museum here looked like that. This is where Japanese merchants lived about 400-500 years ago during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. I saw a lot of data on Ayutthaya's rich heritage and the active role of Japanese merchants. The museum has a huge map of Ayutthaya hanging on the wall. Many artifacts used by Japanese villagers were also displayed here. Of course, there was also a neatly decorated garden unique to Japan.

There were many things to see, including the reasons why the Japanese settled in Ayutthaya in the 16th century and materials showing their lives and activities in detail. The reason why Japan stood out to me is that it was so different from our Joseon Dynasty at the same time. The Joseon Dynasty were nothing but frogs in the well. They were always tied to the aristocratic bureaucracy and engaged in a power game. They wasted their time and energy with cowardly quarrels. At that time, Japan had too entered Ayutthaya with Western powers and engaged in trade business. Japan already had an open mind and insight to see through the international situation 500 years ago.

Japan, as always, is still sensitive to the international situation. Japan has already set the CCP as its main enemy along with the United States. In addition to space cooperation between the U.S. and Japan, the two countries are jointly coping with the 21st-century security situation through cyber security or military alliances in space. In short, Japan has joined hands with the world's strongest U.S. They are strengthening their national interests and security while dealing with public enemies, the CCP and N. Korea. Meanwhile, how is Korea? Is it different from the Joseon Dynasty 400 years ago? Aren't they still closing their eyes to the international situation? Then who would form a military alliance with such a lazy and cowardly country? Koreans can't tell who is who. Cheater criminal politicians are still supported by about half of the people today. Can Korea like this survive?

Anyway, surprisingly, there are also Portuguese and Dutch villages in Ayutthaya. They also symbolize the trade power of the time. Its effect is still valid in the world. I would have been so happy if there was also 'the village of Joseon'. That's why I like a great power that is always ahead. India also has many relics and historic sites left by the great powers of the time. Not to mention Britain, there is an "Old Goa" built by Portugal, while military facilities and prisons built by Japan are preserved (Andaman Island). This is why the whole world can't ignors but fears Japan. However, only Korea is not afraid of them. I don't know if there's any basis for that. Do you know?
