One morning news of outrageous and revolting sacrilege spread through town. At the entrance to our enormous market square stands the ancient church of Our Lady¡¯s Nativity, quite a remarkable piece of antiquity in our ancient town. Recently a large icon of the Virgin was placed in the wall behind a grating near the gates of the enclosure. Then one night this icon was stolen, the glass of the case broken, and the grating smashed; several stones and pearls, I don¡¯t know how valuable, were removed from the crown and setting. But the main thing was that in addition to the theft, an incomprehensible and mocking sacrilege was perpetuated: the next morning it was reported a live mouse was found behind the broken glass of the icon.

Now, four months later, it¡¯s positively been established that this crime was committed by the convict Fedka; but for some reason it was also said that Lyamshin had a part in it. No one said anything about Lyamshin at the time, and no one suspected him, but now everyone confirms that it was he who released the mouse. I recall that our authorities were somewhat at a loss. A crowd had been gathering at the scene of the crime since that morning. There was still a crowd, though not a large one, only about a hundred people. Some arrived while others left. The ones who arrived crossed themselves and bowed down to the icon. They made contributions; a collection plate appeared, and with it , a monk. Only around three o¡¯clock in the afternoon did the authorities realize that they could order the people not to stand around in a crowd; after saying their prayers, bowing to the icon, and making a contribution, they were supposed to move along.

This unfortunate incident produced a very gloomy impression on von Lembke. As I was told afterwards, Yulia Mikhailovna said that from that ill-fated morning she¡¯d begun to notice a strange dejection in her spouse which persisted until his departure from town some two months ago due to illness, and which, it seems, afflicts him even now in Switzerland, where he continues to recuperate his brief career in our province.
