이번에 상클라부리를 10년 단위로 세 번째 와보니 크게 달라진 것과 전혀 달라지지 않는 것이 있었다. 큰 변화는 재래시장을 감싸고 있는 주변의 분위기다. 상당 규모의 가게들이 생겼다는 것. 전자제품, 의류, 약국 등. 더 놀라운 것은 큰 규모의 세븐일레븐 등 편의점이 세 개나 생기고 또한, 시장 주변에 게스트하우스가 여러 개 생겼다는 것. 그리고 무슨 캠프니 리조트니 하는 시설이 많이 생겼다는 것. 규모는 작으나 자랑스런 미니 태극기를 줄줄이 걸어놓은 한국 식당도 있었다는 것이다.

전혀 달라지지 않은 것은 2002년 처음 왔을 때처럼 상클라부리 버스터미널의 위치와 열악한 환경 그리고 버스터미널 바로 옆의 정겨운 재래시장 정도다. 또한, 20년 전 당시에 우리가 묵었던 두 곳의 숙소도 그대로 있었다. 하나는 버스터미널에서 걸어 약 20~30분 걸리는 몬교(몬족이 세운 木橋) 근처의 계곡에 있는 것이고 또 하나의 숙소는 더 아래로 약 15분쯤 더 내려가면 전망이 좋은 카오램 호숫가에 자리잡은 숙소였다.

우리가 20년 전(2002) 상클라부리에 처음 왔을 땐 스마트폰이 없던 시대였다. 배낭여행자 대부분은 ‘론리플래닛(Lonely Planet)’을 가지고 다녔다. 나는 항상 현지에서 사람들에게 직접 물어서 정보를 얻었기에 무거운 책자(册子)를 가지고 다닐 필요가 없었다. 물론 오늘날엔 영어사전은 물론 숙소 예약 등 스마트폰 하나로 다 해결되는 정말 꿈같은 시대에 살고 있다. 그만큼 여행이 편해졌지만 반면에 낯선 곳에 갈 때 생기는 긴장감과 흥분 그리고 감동의 비중은 떨어지는 것 또한 사실이다. 얻는 만큼 잃는 셈이다(得必失).

우린 20년 전 처음에 묵었던 몬교 옆의 대나무집 숙소를 찾아갔다. 혹시나 당시의 주인장이 있나 싶어서. 다행히 여주인과 종업원 한 명이 있었다. 우리가 처음 본 그들은 아직 20대 젊은 부부였다. 부인은 태국인이고 남편은 호주인. 귀여운 꼬맹이 딸과 함께. 그것도 후미진 계곡에 대나무로 엮어 만든 방 7개로 게스트하우스를 운영하고 있었다. 이들은 식당도 겸했다. 그러나 이들은 잠시도 노는 틈이 없었다. 특히 호주인 젊은 남편은 손에 망치와 톱 등 연장을 들고 다니며 숙소와 그 주변을 수선하고 관리하느라 얘기할 틈도 없었다.

당시에 우리가 묵었던 대나무방 다음다음 방에는 한 달 동안 묵고 있다는 60대의 싱가포르인 남자가 있었다. 그는 낮엔 호수에서 낚시를 즐겼다. 그와 나눴던 많은 얘기 가운데 아직 또렷이 기억에 남는 말은 말라카해협과 남중국해에 대한 그의 지식과 국가 간에 얽혀있는 이해관계(利害關係)였다. 지금 생각해보니 그는 마치 오늘날의 무지막지한 습근평이 등장해 완력(腕力)으로 중국몽(일대일로)이니 해양굴기(남중국해 9단선)니 하면서 세계 질서를 흩트려놓을 걸 예감(豫感)했던 것 같다. 특히 한국과 일본의 원유 및 수출입 물동량(物動量)의 대부분이 자유롭게 통과하는 공해상(公海上)의 길목을 불법과 무력으로 통제할 그의 계략을 꿰뚫어 보는 예지력(豫知力)이 있지 않았나 싶다.

옛 식당에 도착했다. 점심시간임에도 손님은 없었다. 알고보니 아직 코로나 여파로 외국인 여행자들은 거의 없고, 주말에 찾아오는 현지인들 정도로 겨우 현상 유지하고 있었다. 아내가 태국인 여주인에게 20년 전에 찍었던 그녀와 그녀의 어린 딸 그리고 강아지의 사진을 스마트폰에서 꺼내 보여주었다. 그녀는 깜짝 놀라며 만면(滿面)에 웃음꽃을 피우더니 옛이야기를 풀어놓기 시작했다. 먼저 호주인과 결혼하게 된 동기와 결혼까지의 시련(試鍊) 그리고 자기 딸 이야기였다.

자기는 비교적 부유한 집안에서 자랐고 대학을 마친 후 교사 생활을 했단다. 자기 여동생도 대학을 나왔단다. 어느 날 자기는 ‘농카이’에 볼일 보러 갔다가 지금의 남편인 호주인 여행자를 만났단다. 그때 그는 22살이었고 자기는 25살이었단다. 처음 만나 대화를 나눈 장소가 어디였냐고 했더니 쇼핑숍의 레스토랑에서였단다. 당시 그 호주인은 배낭여행자로 미얀마를 가기 위해 태국에 들렀단다. 그는 남달리 미얀마에 대한 관심이 많은 청년이었다고. 하지만 그는 미얀마 대신 오늘의 자기를 선택했다는 것이다. 실은 결혼이 성사되기까지 가족들의 반대가 심했단다. 특히 자기 여동생이 더 했단다. 우리 식으로 말하면, “언니는 뭐가 부족해서 그런 무일푼의 떠돌이와 결혼을 하니?”였다. 자기는 적극적으로 호주인 청년을 방어했단다. 22살 나이에 어떻게 돈을 벌 수 있냐고. 그녀는 이 말을 우리에게 여러 번 반복했다. 우린 당연하다고 맞장구를 쳤다.

자기는 가족들에게 보란 듯이 남편과 열심히 노력해서 게스트하우스와 식당을 운영하면서 딸도 잘 키우고 사업도 성공했다는 것이다. 태국판 인간승리(人間勝利)였다. 지금 그 딸은 어디 있느냐고 물었더니 호주에서 직장생활하고 있으며, 국적도 자기 아빠의 국적에 따라 호주란다. 호주와 태국을 오가면서 초등학교부터 대학까지 다 마쳤단다. 학비는 누가 댔느냐고 물었더니 마담은 당당한 표정으로 자기가 다 댔단다. 그래서 자기는 딸에게 할 말이 많단다. 그게 무슨 뜻이냐고 했더니, 자기는 딸과 함께 살고 싶단다. 그런데 남편의 생각은 다르단다.

지금 딸의 애인은 일본인인데 도요타 호주 지점에 근무하는 능력 있는 사윗감이라며 노골적으로 자랑했다. 그런데 갑자기 마담의 표정이 심각해졌다. 자기가 딸에게 결혼해서 아기를 낳으면 자기가 다 키워줄 것이며 자기의 사업체도 다 념겨준다고 했더니 그 말은 듣고 있던 딸이 냉정한 어투(語套)로 일언지하(一言之下)에 “노”라고 했다는 것이다. 엄마가 싫어서가 아니라 시골 생활이 싫어서. 그리고 더 화나는 것은 결혼해도 아이는 안 가질 것이라고 했다는 것이다. 이미 젊은 세대의 가치관이 바뀐 결과가 아니겠냐고 했더니, 이 마담이 하는 말은 아이가 없으면 웃을 일도 없고 돈을 벌어도 재미도 없다는 것이다. 결국, 재미없는 인생은 건강을 해치게 되고 삶의 의욕도 잃게 된단다. 이를 딸에게 아무리 강조를 해도 소용이 없는 듯해서 걱정이 태산 같다고 했다. 아내가 마담에게 말했다. 딸과 함께 호주에 가서 살면 되지 않으냐고. 마담은 말이 없었다.

내심(內心) 나는 그 호주인 남편이 나타나기를 바랐는데 결국 보이지 않았다. 궁금해서 물었다. 그는 지금 어디에 있느냐고. 마담 왈, 코로나 이후로 일 년에 절반 이상을 호주에서 돈벌이를 한단다. 코로나가 완전히 끝나면 예전처럼 이곳의 게스트하우스와 식당 운영만으로도 매우 바쁠 것이라고 했다. 과연 코로나의 위력은 대단했다. 이들 부부 사이의 금실(琴瑟)도 떼어놓았으니. 암튼, 딸 문제가 해결되면 곧 이어진 다음 걱정거리는 무엇이었는지, 만약 10년 뒤에 상클라부리든 호주든 다시 만난다면 꼭 듣고 싶다.

Sangkhlaburi has changed a lot. In fact, there was little change between 2002 and 2012. There was an old friendly traditional market right next to the Sangkhlaburi Bus Terminal. One lodge in the forest near Mon Bridge, which took about 20 to 30 minutes on foot from the bus terminal. Another one was located by the Khaolaem Lake with a good view of the Lake, which was about 15 minutes down.

What remained unchanged for the third time was the bus terminal and the traditional market right next to it. Everything else seemed to have changed. The area around the traditional market was full of big shops. Electronics, clothing, pharmacies, etc. What's more surprising was that there were three big 7-Eleven and other convenience stores. The most interesting thing for us was that there were several guest houses around the market and many different camp and resort facilities. A Korean restaurant with the cute Taegukgi(Korean National flag) hanging on the roof.

When we came to Sangkhlaburi 20 years ago (2002), there were only two lodges for backpackers to stay. As you know, there were no smartphones, so most backpackers had "Lonely Planet." in their hands. I didn't do it because I always got info I needed directly people there. Of course today is a dream-like era in which not only English dictionaries but also accommodation bookings are solved with one smartphone. But it’s not free. I mean that I lost some exciting and emotion. In other words, I lose as much as I gain.

We visited the bamboo lodge next to Mon Bridge, where we stayed 20 years ago. Cause we wanted to meet the owner of 20 yrs ago and she was there. The couple in the lodge we saw 20 yrs ago were a young couple in their 20s. His wife was a young Thai and his husband was a young Australian, they had a cute little girl. They were running a guest house with seven rooms made of bamboo. However they had no time to rest. The young husband carried tools such as hammers and saws in his hands in order to fixing something around.

At that time, there was a Singaporean man in his 60s at the lodge we stayed at. He enjoyed fishing in the lake during the day. One of the stories I had with him was still clearly memorable. It was his knowledge of the Strait of Malacca and the S. China Sea. Now that I think about it, he seemed to have foreseen that today's reckless Xi would come up and break the world order with his power. In particular, he seemed to have had the foresight to see through Xi's plan to control the path of the S. China Sea, where most of Korea and Japan's crude oil and import and export volumes pass freely.

There were no people except her emproyee in the restaurant. Because there were few foreign travelers since the COVID-19. My wife took out a picture from her smartphone. It's of her, her little daughter and her dog 20 years ago. She showed it to the Madam. She was surprised at it and started to tell us her own history vividly. About her marriage and her daughter.

She grew up in a wealthy family and became a teacher after college. Her sister also graduated from college. One day, she went to Nongkai to do something and met her current husband, an Australian traveler. He was 22 and she was 25. I asked her where she first talked to him. She said it was a restaurant in a shopping shop. At that time, the Australian stopped by Thailand to go to Myanmar as a backpacker. He really loved Myanmar. But he gave up Myanmar and married her. In fact, there was a lot of opposition from her family until they got married. Especially her sister was strongly opposed. Saying in Korean, "You must be crazy. Why do you marry such a poor wanderer?" She actively defended her husband. Saying that all 22 year old guys had no time to make money. We agreed to her.

She said she worked hard with her husband to run the guest house and restaurant, raising her daughter well and made her business successful. It was like a Thai version of human victory. I asked where her daughter was. Her daughter worked in Australia and her nationality was Australia like her father. The daughter finished from elementary school to college in Australia and Thailand. When I asked who paid the her tuition. She said she did it with a firm look. So she seemed to have a lot to say to her daughter. She meant that she wanted to live with her daughter.

Madame boasted that her daughter's lover was a Japanese guy who was a capable, worked at Toyota's Australian branch. But suddenly Madame's face became serious. She told us that she would take care of her daugher's baby and would handed her business over to her daughter after her daugher married but the daughter who was listening said "no" in a cold tone. Not because she didn't like her mom, but because she didn't like country life. And what's even angrier for the madam was that her daughter said she would have no baby even if she got married. I said to her that it’s common for the young generation. But the madam said that without kids, there was nothing to laugh about and no meaning to make money. Eventually, a boring life can ruin people’s health and lose their motivation to live. She said that no matter how strong she emphasized her idea to her daughter in vain. When my wife advise her to live with her daughter in Austrailia, the madam said nothing. I still don't know what's that meaning.

I really wanted to talk with the Australian husband but no shown up. Curious, I asked where he was now. Madame said he had been making money in Australia more than half a year since the coronavirus. Madame said that once COVID-19 was completely over, the operation of guest houses and restaurants there will be as busy as before. Indeed, the power of COVID-19 was harsh. Cause it made such a wonderful couple separated for a long time. Anyway, I wonder what her next worry will be after solving her daughter's issue. Hopefully, I'd see her another ten years later no matter where in Sangkhlaburi and Australia.
