먼저 엄청난 지진의 피해로 가족을 잃은 유가족에게 심신의 위로 말씀을 전합니다. 아직 구원의 손길을 애타게 기다리고 있을 존귀한 생명을 위해 간절히 기도 올립니다.

뉴스에 의하면, 윤석열 대통령은 9일 오후 튀르키예 지진 희생자들을 추모하기 위해 주한튀르키예 대사관을 찾아 “튀르키예 국민들이 좌절과 슬픔을 극복하고 일어날 수 있도록 우리나라가 최선을 다해 돕겠다” “튀르키예는 우리의 형제국이자 혈맹”이라고 했다.

나는 우리나라 대통령들은 물론 국민도 마치 약속을 한 듯이 터키를 피를 나눈 혈맹이요 형제의 나라하고 할 때마다 내가 경험했던 에피소드가 되살아난다.

2003. 8. 러시아 여행 중 이르쿠츠크에서 있었던 일이다. 어느 식당 앞을 지나다 우연히 식당 안을 들여다봤는데 식당 내부에 특히 천장(天障)에 이스라엘 국기(國旗)인 다윗의 별이 많이 걸려 있었다. 매우 인상적이었다. 물론 이스라엘인들의 국기 사랑이 어느 정도인지는 이스라엘에서 직접 보기도 했다. 어쨌든 식사도 할 겸 들어갔다. 마침 벽 TV에서 축구 경기가 진행되고 있었다. 내가 자리에 앉자마자 TV를 보던 사람 중 한 명이 내게 말을 걸었다.

A: 일본인입니까?

B: 아니요. 한국인입니다.

A: 그렇군요. 마침 잘 됐습니다. 그렇지 않아도 한국 사람에게 꼭 물어볼 말이 있었거든요.

B: 그래요? 뭔지 모르겠지만 기대됩니다.

A: 나는 2002년 한국에서 있었던 월드컵을 TV로 봤어요. 인상적이었던 경기는 한국과 터키의 3~4위전이었습니다. 왜냐면 한국인들의 거의 절반이 터키 국기를 흔들며 터키를 열렬히 응원해요. 정말 이상한 장면이었습니다. 상대 팀에게 저렇게 많은 사람이 그 나라의 국기를 흔들며 응원을 하다니. 그런데 중계방송에서도 그런 장면이 특이해서였는지 해설을 하더군요. 한국인들은 터키를 형제의 나라라고 생각해서 저런 모습을 보인다고요. 그 이유는 터키인들이 한국 전쟁에 참전한 혈맹(血盟)이기 때문이라고 해요. 난 그 말을 듣고 오히려 더 궁금해졌지요. 왜냐면 그런 이유라면 한국 전쟁에 참전한 모든 나라가 다 형제의 나라가 돼야 하고요. 더더욱 이해가 안 되는 건 한국 전쟁에서 가장 많은 희생자를 낸 나라가 미국인데 미국을 형제의 나라라고 하지 않는다고 해요. 그 이유가 궁금한 겁니다.

B: 사실 나도 비록 한국인이지만 그 점에 대해서 궁금하긴 마찬가지입니다. 왜 유독 터키만 혈맹이고 형제의 나라인지 그리고 미국과 다른 참전국 15개국은 혈맹이라거나 형제의 나라라고 하지 않는지. 그 근거가 뭔지. 혹시 한국전에 투입한 병력의 수와 장비를 기준으로 했다? 전쟁 중 가장 피를 많이 흘린 부상자와 전사자를 낸 나라를 기준으로 했다? 한국전에서 가장 중요한 요지(要地)를 사수하며 치열한 전투를 한 국가를 기준으로 했다? 등, 여러 상황을 상정(想定)해 봤지만, 역시 답이 아닌 것 같거든요.

A: 그렇다면 역사적 근거가 있는 걸까요? 혹시 생각나는 것이 있다면 듣고 싶습니다.

B: 글세요. 나 역시 이 문제를 역사나 문화적 관점에서 보려고 했지만 객관성이 없어요. 가령, 오늘날 터키인의 조상인 먼 옛날 6세기에 등장했던 돌궐이 한때 고구려와 인연을 맺은 적이 있다거나, 인종적으로 황인종(黃人種)에 속한다거나, 언어적으로 어순(語順)이 비슷한 우랄 알타이 어족에 속한다거나 혹은 일부 터키인들에게도 몽고점이 있기 때문이라는 등 나름대로 합당한 근거를 찾아보지만, 나로서는 곧 한계를 느꼈습니다. 왜냐하면, 이 범주에는 몽골인, 만주족, 일본인, 핀란드인 마자르(헝가리)인 그리고 멀리 남미의 잉카족까지 연결되기 때문입니다. 좀 더 알아봐야겠어요. 어쨌든 좋은 지적 감사합니다.

<참고2: 실제로 나는 볼리비아 여행(1997) 중 그곳의 일일(一日) 투어에 참여해 중세(中世) 유적지를 돌아본 적이 있다. 이때 현지 가이드가 자국(自國) 역사를 소개하면서 몽골인들의 몽고점이 볼리비아인들에게 있다는 말을 들었기 때문이다.)

왜 한국인들은 유난히 터키만을 형제의 나라요, 피를 나눈 혈맹(血盟)의 나라라고 하는지, 이런 궁금증을 가진 외국인이 있다는 것도, 또 그런 질문을 내가 직접 러시아의 이르쿠츠크에서 만난 유대인으로부터 받았다는 것도, 내가 하는 세계여행의 재미라면 재미다.

이번 윤석열 대통령도 전직 대통령들처럼 터키를 언급할 땐 형제의 나라 혹은 피를 나눈 혈맹의 나라라고 했다. 아마 지금쯤 지구촌 어디선가 내가 이르쿠츠크에서 유대인으로부터 질문을 받았던 것처럼, 똑같은 질문을 한국인 누구에겐가 하고 있을지 모른다. “왜 한국인들은 터키인들에게만 피를 나눈 혈맹이라고 합니까?”

First of all, I would like to convey my condolences to the bereaved family who lost their family members in the devastating earthquake in Turkiye. I pray earnestly for the precious life that is still waiting anxiously for the hand of salvation.

According to today's news, President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the Turkiye Embassy in Seoul to commemorate the victims of the Turkiye earthquake on the afternoon of the 9th and said, "We will do our best to help the people of Turkiye overcome frustration and sadness." "Turkiye is our brother country and blood alliance."

Whenever Korean presidents as well as Koreans share Turkey's blood as if they had made a promise, the episodes I experienced come back to me.

It happened in Irkutsk during my trip to Russia. Looking inside the restaurant while passing by a restaurant and there were many stars of David, the Israeli flag, hanging from the ceiling. Very impressive to me. Of course I've seen their flag love on a trip to Israel. Anyway, I entered the restaurant to eat. There was a soccer game on TV in the restaurant. When sat down, one of the people watching TV talked to me.

A: Excuse me. Are you Japanese?

B: No, I'm Korean.

A: I see. Nice to meet you. I had something to ask Koreans. Ok?

B: Sure. Go ahead. I like to talk. I enjoy it.

A: I watched the 2002 World Cup held in Korea on TV. The most impressive game for me was the match between Korea and Turkey. At that time, I saw almost half of Koreans waving Turkish flags and cheering Turkish team enthusiastically. It was a very strange scene for me. I couldn't believe so many people were waving not Korean flags but the Turkish flag and cheering for the Turkish team. And on the broadcast, they explained that it was a unique scene.

The broadcaster said Koreans consider Turkey a brotherly country. Because Turks were blood allies who participated in the Korean War. Listening to him I was rather more curious about it. If for that reason, I thought all the countries that participated in the Korean War should have been called brothers' countries. Why not? What was even more incomprehensible was that the USA has suffered the most in the Korean War. But strangely, however, Koreans don’t call America a brotherly country. Isn’t it strange?

B: Actually, I don't know why, even though I'm Korean. I also don't know why Koreans think Turkey is the only blood alliance and brotherly country and why Koreans don't call the U.S. and 15 other warring countries blood alliance or brotherhood countries. Is it based on the number of troops and equipment put into the Korean War? Based on the countries that lost the most blood in the war? Or because they fought a successful battle? I still don't know what the exact reason about it.

A: I see. Well then do you think there's any historical reason for that? If you have any idea of such a historical background, I'd like to hear you.

B: Well, I also tried to check out this issue from a historical or cultural view, but I couldn't get any answer either.

For example, the relationship between the Gokturk and Goguryeo, which emerged in the 6th century, the ancestors of today's Turks. They are racially the same as us and are linguistically similar to the Ural Altai languages. Or some Turks also have Mongolian spots. Like this, I tried finding out any reasonable basis in vain.

I think it’s because this category connects Mongolians, Manchurians, Japanese, Finnish Mazarians (Hungarians), and the Incas in S. America. That means I need more data. Anyway, thanks a lot for the good point.

Well, it’s fun for me to meet such a guy in Irkutsk, Russia, who was curious about why Koreans call Turkiye the country of blood alliance and brotherhood.

(Note2:In fact, I joined in a daily tour there during my trip to Bolivia (1997) and toured medieval sites. Becuse a local guide introduced the history of his own country and heard that the Mongolian people's Mongolian spot was in the Bolivians.)

I didn't know why Koreans call Turkiye a country of brothers and blood allies. It was also surprising that I received such a question from a Jew I met in Irkutsk, Russia. But I think this is one of the pleasures of my world tour.

President Yoon Suk Yeol also said, when referring to Turkiye, like former presidents, it's a country of brothers or blood-sharing. Maybe by now somewhere in the world, as I was asked by a Jew in Irkutsk, a Korean is receiving the same question from a foreigner. "Why do Koreans call Turkiye blood-sharing blood alliance?"
