"Kirillov, I could never understand why you wanted to kill yourself. I only know it¡¯s because of some conviction... some strong conviction. But if you feel the need to pour out your heart, so to speak, I¡¯m at your service¡¦ But we must keep track of time¡¦"

  "What time is it?"

"Oho, two o¡¯clock sharp." Peter Stepanovich said, looking at his watch and lighting a cigarette.

"It looks like we can still reach an agreement." he thought to himself.

"I have nothing to tell you." Kirillov muttered.

"I recall something about God¡¦ you once explained it all to me; even twice. If you shoot yourself, you¡¯ll become God, isn¡¯t that right?"

  "Yes, I¡¯ll become God."

Peter Stepanovich didn¡¯t even smile; he waited. Kirillov looked at him shrewdly.

"You¡¯re a political impostor and an intriguer; you want to get me talking about philosophy, make me enthusiastic, then bring about reconciliation to disperse my anger; and, when we¡¯ve made up, you¡¯ll ask me to sign a document saying I killed Shatov."

Peter Stepanovich replied with almost natural artlessness:

"Well, supposing I am such a scoundrel¡¦ does it really matter to you, Kirillov, in your last moments? What, pray, are we arguing about? You¡¯re one sort of person, I¡¯m another. So what? Besides, we¡¯re both¡¦"

  "Scoundrels."

"Yes, perhaps scoundrels. You know it¡¯s only words."

"All my life I¡¯ve wanted it to be more than any words. I¡¯ve gone on living because of that. Even now every day I want it to be more than just words."

  ---------------------------------------
"Give me a pen!" Kirillove shouted all of a sudden, completely unexpectedly, in positive inspiration. "Dictate; I will sign anything. I¡¯ll even say I murdered Shatov. Dictate while it still amuses me. I¡¯m not afraid of what supercilious slaves may think! You¡¯ll see for yourself: the whole mystery will be revealed! And you¡¯ll be crushed¡¦ I believe! I believe!"

Peter Stepanovich jumped up and instantly brought him an inkstand and paper and began to dictate, seizing the moment and trembling in his success.

  "I, Aleksei Kirillov, declare¡¦"

"Wait! No, no! To whom do I declare?"

Kirillov shook as if in a high fever. This declaration of his and the peculiar, unexpected idea of making it so suddenly seemed to engulf him entirely, as though it were some escape desperately sought by his tormented soul, if only for a single moment.

"To whom do I declare? I want to know."

"To no one, to everyone, to the first person who reads it. Why limit it? To the whole world!"*

"I, Aleksei Kirillov." Peter Stepanovich dictated forcefully and peremptorily, leaning over Kirillov¡¯s shoulder and following the formation of each letter made by a hand trembling with excitement. "I, Kirillov, declare that today, the¡ªth day of October, at eight o¡¯clock in the evening, I killed the student Shatov for his treachery, in the park, and for his denunciation concerning the pamphlets, and Fedka as well who was secretly staying with both of us at Filippov¡¯s house where he¡¯d been for ten days. I¡¯m also killing myself today with a revolver not because I repent or am afraid of you, but because when I was abroad I conceived the intention of taking my own life."
