호텔 라운지에 앉아 있다 한 젊은이가 오토바이 헬멧을 들고 나가는 것을 보고 말을 걸었다. 그는 영국 런던에서 온 오토바이 여행자였다, 6개월 동안 태국을 중심으로 동남아를 돌고 있단다. 나는 이런 친구들을 보면 정말 부러울 뿐만 아니라 묻고 싶은 게 많다. 내가 그동안 여행 중에 만난 오토바이 여행자들 가운데 가장 인상 깊고 부러웠던 친구들은 1996년, 튀니스 공항에서 만난 두 독일인 젊은이들이었다. 이들은 당시만 해도 미들급 이상으로 치던 벤츠 300CC급을 타고 한 달간 사하라 사막을 포함 튀니지 전역(全域)을 돌았던 것이다. 내가 이 이야기를 이 영국 친구에게 했더니 그도 언젠가는 아프리카에 도전(挑戰)하는 것이 꿈이라고 했다.

사실 내가 꼭 하고 싶었던 것 중 하나는 大韓民國 최초의 세계 여행가 김찬삼 씨의 오토바이 남미(南美)여행이었다. 물론 그분은 오토바이로 아프리카와 캐나다는 돌았지만, 미국에서 에콰도르 적도(赤道)까지의 계획은 실현되지 않았다. 나는 60년대부터 일간지(日刊紙)에 실리기 시작한 그분의 세계여행기는 물론, 그것을 묶어 컬러사진과 함께 70년대 초에 출간(出刊)된 한국 최초의 세계여행기도 구입해 틈만 나면 보고 또 보고했던 기억이 새롭다. 당시엔 문자 그대로 세계 여행은 그림의 떡이었다. 그러나 막연했지만 꿈을 포기한 적은 없었다. 내가 미국에 있을 때 멕시코를 거쳐 남미를 간 적이 있다. 그때 오토바이로 김찬삼씨가 제시한 루트를 따라 가보려 했지만, 솔직히 용기가 없어 못 했다. 대신 그분이 했던 것처럼 볼리비아의 아마존강에서 피라냐의 위험을 무릅쓰고 수영(水泳)은 했다. 또한, 오토바이를 타고 필리핀과 남아공의 케이프타운을 돌기도 했다. 이처럼 여행 중 만나는 세계인들은 항상 나에게 옛 추억을 되새겨줘서 고맙다.

내가 이 친구에게 서울의 물가(物價)도 만만치 않지만, 런던에 비하면 아직은 괜찮은 편이라고 하니, 그는 나에게 런던 경험을 해봤냐고 묻더니, 내 대답은 듣지도 않고, 오늘날 런던 생활은 정말 어렵다고 했다. 높은 물가(物價) 상승률은 말할 것도 없고, 일자리는 물론 식품 자체가 태부족(太不足)이란다. 이 모든 것이 브렉시트 (Brexit) 탓이란다. 영국이 EU를 탈퇴한 것은 정치인의 책임도 크지만 국민들, 특히 다수의 기성세대(旣成世代)가 문제란다. 자유와 개방을 원하는 젊은 세대와 안정과 전통을 원하는 구세대(舊世代)와의 생각 차이가 이런 결과를 낳았다는 것이다.

브렉시트의 단점 중 가장 큰 것이 있다면 무엇이냐고 했더니, 그는 금융시장의 위축(萎縮)으로 자신의 일자리를 잃었다는 것과 예전과 달리 유럽 여행을 자유롭게 할 수 없다는 것이라고 했다. 직접 피해자라는 뜻. 어쨌든 이런 문제를 푸는 것도 정치권의 몫인데, 그 가능성이 보이느냐고 했더니, 이 친구 왈, 별 희망이 없단다. 여야(與野)를 막론하고 정계(政界)의 요직을 독식한 엘리트 정치인의 타협할 줄 모르는 뿌리 깊은 배타적(排他的) 문화가 바뀌지 않는 한 어렵단다. 그럼, EU 탈퇴를 처음 공약(公約)한 케머런 총리와 최종 마무리를 지은 보리스 총리 중 누구에게 더 큰 책임이 있냐고 했더니, 그는 잠시 생각하더니 보리스 총리라고 했다. 그렇다면 당시 EU 회장국인 독일의 메르켈 총리는 어떻게 생각하느냐고 했더니 그는 그냥 고개만 흔들었다.

오토바이 여행을 하다 보면 의외(意外)의 사고도 생기기 마련인데 그런 에피소드가 있느냐고 물었더니, 이 친구는 베트남에서 몇 번의 사고가 날 뻔했단다. 영국과 주행(走行) 방향이 다르기 때문에. 영국은 차량이 좌측통행인 데 반해서 베트남은 우측통행이기 때문이다. 나도 남아공과 일본, 태국, 인도, 등에서 경험했지만 이처럼 차량 통행 방향이 다른 나라에서는 정말 정신을 바짝 차려야 한다. 지금쯤 이 친구는 싱가포르를 향해 달리고 있을 것이다. 행운을 빈다.

As I was sitting in the hotel lounge, a young guy appeared with a motorcycle helmet. He was a motorcycle traveler from London, England. He had been traveling to Southeast Asia, mainly Thailand, for six months. He looked so cool. The most impressive of the motorcyclists I've met during my trip were two German guys I met at Tunis Airport in 1996. They traveled all over Tunisia, including the Sahara Desert, for a month on the Mercedes-Benz 300CC class, which was equivalent to the middle class. When I told him this story, he also said that his dream was to challenge Africa someday.

In fact, one of the things I really wanted to do was travel to S. America on a motorcycle that Korea's first world traveler Kim Chan-sam wanted to do. Of course, he rode a motorcycle around Africa and Canada. However, he failed in his plans from the USA to Ecuador's equator. I really enjoyed reading his travels around the world in daily newspapers in the 1960s. Of course, I've read throughly Korea's first world tour, which he published in the early 1970s. At that time, traveling around the world was literally pie in the sky. But I never gave up my dream. When I was in the U.S., I went to S. America via Mexico. At that time, what I wanted to do was to ride a motorcycle what Kim Chan-sam had wanted to do. But, frankly, I didn't have the courage to. Instead, I swam in the Amazon River in Bolivia at the risk of piranha, as he did. Also, I traveled the Philippines and Cape Town in S. Africa by motorcycle. Like this, I am so grateful to them for always reminding me of my old memories.

When I told him that Seoul's prices were quite high, but it's still okay compared to London. Funny, he asked me if I had experienced London but he skipped my answer and said that life in London today was really crazy. He said that London had a lack of food as well as jobs, not to mention high inflation rates. He blamed it all on Brexit. "Politians are responsive for Britain's exit from the EU, but the public, especially the older generation, is a more problem." He argued that his generation's desire for freedom and openness while the old generation's desire for stability and tradition.

When I asked what was the biggest disadvantage of Brexit for him, he said that he lost his job due to the contraction of the financial market and also he couldn't travel freely to Europe unlike before. anyway I thought it's also the responsibility of politicians to solve these complex problems and so I asked him if it was possible. He said, there's little hope. He said elite politicians who dominated important political positions, regardless of the ruling and opposition parties, should be replaced first. Then, I asked who was more responsible, Cameron, who promised to leave the EU for the first time, or Boris, who finished the final round and he thought for a while and said Boris. I Asked him again what he thought of German Chancellor Merkel, who was then the EU's president at the time. Instead of answering, he just shook his head.

Asked him if he had any episodes about motorcycle travel. He said several accidents were almost close call in Vietnam. The problem was the different direction of driving in Vietnam from the UK. I had the same experience in S. Africa, Japan, Thailand, India, etc. As such, I desperately felt that driving in a country with a different direction of vehicle traffic had to be alert. By now, this friend must be running towards Singapore. I had my fingers crossed for his motorcycle trip.
