Poeple met on my backpacking138 – Is a woman a tree?

Today's story is about a Swiss I met a while ago. This gentleman was also a member of the long-term stay hotel we were staying at. Most of the guests here were retired Westerners in their 60s or so. Also, most of them were singles. They were all men. Some of them sometimes had a local lover here, but in reality, it's rare. Since they were originally from a culture that enjoyed conversation, so they only seemed to get along well with local women. One of the interesting things was that there were no single womon of retirement age here, including Koreans and Japanese. That doesn't mean that the elderly in the West don't travel. However, most of them travel in groups. The only single woman I've ever seen was a Dutch I met five years ago. She was living in a room on the eighth floor rooftop of the hotel where we stayed. I spoke to her for a moment and she said she had been traveling since she broke up with her lifelong travel partner. She looked fine of course.

Asked the Swiss I met today first. "Is it cold in Switzerland right now? He said that it's very cold. I told him that Seoul was also very cold in winter, and especially my wife was sensitive to cold, so we came to Pattaya together. He said, "I'm envious of you." When I asked why, he said that he always came here and spent three months because he didn't like the cold in winter. But his wife hated the heat and had never come to Pattaya with him. That's why he's so jealous when he saw a couple together like us. When I said traveling with someone who could share memories would be quite better, he then nodded.

Generally, I don't talk about personal life, especially when I meet Westerners, but sometimes there are exceptions. Resently I met a German. He was curious about my wife just like a Swiss. He asked if I was her boyfriend. I told him she was my wife. He then told me that he didn't come to Thailand with his wife as if he was telling me a secret. The reason was funny. "A woman is a tree. Trees do not move. Therefore, women are trees." I told him you were saying something wrong, completely out of date. Still, he said, "We should never move trees. The tree is the safest and happiest when it stands in place," he grinned.

I said, "There was a time when Korea had that stereotype but now it's impossible. They are immediately divorced." He raised his eyebrows at my remark and asked back if it was true. I said. "Of course. Unlike in the past, Koreans now divorce immediately. Times have completely changed. And as you said, if a woman is a tree, a man is the wind, so in Korea, a man who has an affair is called a Casanova. It means that the wind is always moving. There's a song, too, called 'Men Are Ships, Women Are Ports' and it's a very popular song. After all, the relationship between ship and wind is the same as the between tree and port. Agree?" "Absolutely." he replied. Well, I think we can find something in common when we talk about all sorts of things. Mostly it's something that most men share.

I'll tell you about the Swiss next time.

Thank. No great Korea, no Korean passport power!
