알고 보니 이 양반은 스위스 출신으로 중년(中年)까지 루체른에서 살다가 직장을 따라 오스트리아로 옮겼다. 은퇴 후에도 계속 오스트리아 크렘스에 살고 있었다. 스위스와 오스트리아는 세계적으로도 유명한 관광대국(觀光大國)인데 그런 곳에서 태어나고 살았으니 당신은 행운아 아니냐고 했더니, 그는 긍정 반 부정 반 고개를 끄덕였다. 이는 마치 시골 사람이 서울 사람에게 당신은 123층의 롯데타워 등 볼거리가 많은 곳에 사니 복도 많다고 말하는 사람을 바라보는 표정과 비슷. 암튼, 그게 무슨 의미냐고 했더니 그는 무엇보다도 자기는 추위에 약한 체질(體質)이라서 일 년에 약 절반 정도는 불편하단다. 문제는 자기 아내라고. 자기와 정반대의 체질이라 더위는 질색(窒塞)이란다. 더 묻지는 않았지만, 이들 부부의 신뢰와 사랑은 대단해 보였다. 그 이면(裏面)에는 그들의 합리적 사고(思考)라고 할까, 독립된 개인 영역의 범위를 상호 존중하는 기본이 잘돼 있다는 인상을 받았다.

그가 내게 말했다. 자기는 우리 부부(夫婦)를 처음 볼 때 중국인으로 생각했다고. 흔히 있는 일이다. 우리도 얼굴만으론 서구인의 국적(國籍)을 구분 못 하니까. 그가 나에게 중국에 대한 생각을 묻기에 난 한 마디로 모든 공산주의자는 싫다. 특히 중공, 러시아, 북한은 더 싫다고 했다. 이 양반은 의외라는 듯 내게 그 이유를 물었다. 난 한마디로 인류 역사상 사람을 가장 많이 굶겨 죽이고 때려죽이고 학살(虐殺)하고 탄압(彈壓)한 자들이 모두 공산주의자들이기 때문이라고 했다. 이 양반 표정을 보니 확신을 못 하는 것 같아서 난 바로 내 스마트폰으로 ‘the Blackbook of Communism’을 검색해 영문자료(英文資料)를 보여주었다(한글 자료도 있지만, 그들에겐 무의미하니까).

중공이 6500만 명을, 소련이 2000만 명을, 북한이 200만 명을, 캄보디아가 200만 명을, 에티오피아, 아프칸, 동유럽, 베트남, 남미 등 순으로 학살당한 사람들의 숫자들이 나열되어 있었다. 그는 이 자료를 본 뒤 심각한 표정으로 나에게 중국을 가보았느냐고 물었다. 그렇다고 하니 그는 곧 자신의 경험담을 털어놓았다. 자기는 친구와 함께 2008년 북경 올림픽 때 그곳에 갔는데 감시(監視)와 통제(統制)가 너무 심해서 다시는 생각조차 하고 싶지 않은 나라가 됐다는 것이다. 그의 얘길 들어 보니 내가 경험한 것과 비슷했다. 당시엔 스마트폰이 없던 때니까 이메일 체크 등 인터넷을 이용하려면 소위 말하는 PC방(왕빠網巴)에 가야만 했다. 문제는 그들이 내 여권(旅券)을 요구하고 인적(人的) 사항을 노트에 다 기록하고 사용 목적을 묻는 등 이루 말할 수 없는 불편과 불이익을 줬다. 자유가 몸에 밴 사람에겐 견디기 어려운 순간들이었다. 나는 그 이후론 중국에 발을 끊었다고 했더니, 이 양반은 한술 더 떠 아예 중국 공산당이 사라질 때까진 절대로 안 간단다. 직접 경험한 자와 그렇지 않은 자와의 명확한 차이는 이럴 때 나타나는 법.

내가 그에게 스위스와 오스트리아에서 꼭 봐는 할 곳이 있다면 어디를 추천하겠느냐고 물었다. 그는 답 대신 나에게 스위스와 오스트리아에서 무엇을 보았느냐고 되물었다. 내가 가보았던 곳을 하나하나 말했더니 그는 나에게 고개를 끄덕이며 그 정도면 더 이상 안 가도 된단다. 그렇게 비싼 나라에 가느니 이곳 태국이 훨씬 좋단다. 참 솔직 담백한 친구였다. 내가 그에게 말했던 곳은 오스트리아의 비엔나, 짤즈부르크, 인스부르크, 크렘스, 멜크, 그라즈 등이었다. 스위스는 바젤, 제네바, 마터호른, 루체른, 베른, 인터라켄, 그린델발트, 융프라우 등이었다. 그는 내가 만약 멜크를 안 가봤다면 그곳과 루체른을 추천하려고 했단다. 멜크를 가봤다는 건 멜크 수도원을 가 봤다는 거고, 루체른을 가봤다는 건 ‘빈사(瀕死)의 사자상(獅子像)’을 봤을 것으로 믿기 때문이란다. 관점의 차이가 있긴 했지만 공감했다.

정말 스위스인 당사자에게 재확인하고 싶은 건 바로 이것이었다. 핵전쟁 대피소. 내가 인터라켄 게스트하우스에서 묵을 때다(1996). 숙소 주인에게 핵 대피소가 진짜 있느냐고 물었더니 그는 그렇다며 그 대피소가 있는 장소를 손가락으로 가리켜준 적이 있다. 이번에 만난 그에게도 똑같은 질문을 했다. 그 역시 당연히 있다며, 자기가 살던 집에는 8인용 대피소가 있었단다. 필수 준비물은 환풍기, 식수, 용변기, 식품, 비상약, 건전지 라디오 등이라고 했다. 대피소 벙커문 두께는 자기 팔을 뻗쳐 보이며 그 정도라고 했다. 자기 가족은 4인이었지만 8인용으로 한 건 어떤 규정에 해당된 지역이었기 때문이란다. 그래서인지 오늘날에는 전 국민을 수용하고도 남을 정도여서 지역에 따라선 핵전쟁 대피소 시설이 법적 의무사항에서 해제된 것으로 안다고 했다. <계속>

He was born in Switzerland and lived in Lucerne until his middle age before moving to Austria. He kept on living in Krems Austria, after his retirement. He meant that he didn't like both countries because of the cold weathe in winter. About half a year was hard for him but not for his wife. His wife on the contrary enjoyed the cold weather. I didn't ask him more but the couple's trust and love seemed great. I thought that they respect each other for the scope of the independent personal domain.

He thought we were Chinese when he first saw us. It happens. We too can't tell the difference just by looking at the faces of Westerners. When he asked me what I thought of China, I said deffinetely that I hated all communists but especially CCP, USSR, and N. K. He unexpectedly asked me why. In short, I told him that it's because all the communists who starved people to death, killed, slaughtered and suppressed people the most in human history. Judging from his face, he didn't seem sure, so I immediately searched 'the Blackbook of Communism' on my smartphone and showed him English data (although there were Korean data, it's meaningless for them).

According to the data, the Chinese Communists killed 65 million people. The number of people who were massacred was listed in the order of the Soviet Union (20 million), N. K. (2 million), Cambodia (2 million), Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Eastern Europe, Vietnam, and S. America. After seeing this data, he asked me with a serious look if I had been to China. It was this that I really wanted to reconfirm with the Swiss. It's a nuclear war shelter. When I stayed at Interlaken guest house (1996), I asked the owner of the G.H if there was a nuclear shelter. He said yes and pointed his finger to the place where the shelter was. I asked him the same question I met this time. He gave the same answer. There was an eight-person shelter in his house. Essential supplies included ventilators, drinking water, toilet bowls, food, emergency medicine, and battery radios. He said the thickness of the bunker door at the shelter was about as thick as his arm was stretched out. That's why I thought they didn't have to worry about it too much.
