학생들의 전공이 국제학이어서 그런지 이들의 영어 구사력도 상당했다. 이들은 우즈베키스탄에 여행 온 한국인들이 영어로 길을 묻고 관광지에서 물건값을 흥정하는 모습 등을 많이 본 것 같았다. 다음 질문에서 그것이 잘 나타난다.

Q: 한국인들은 모두 당신처럼 영어를 잘하나요? 그렇다면 그 비결은 무엇인가요?

A: 다는 아니지만, 한국의 젊은이들은 학생들처럼 영어를 잘해요. 세계가 개방된 이후 나타난 현상이지요. 한마디로 국제사회에서 통용되는 영어를 못하면 우선 답답하고, 재미도 없다는 걸 깨달은 거지요. 또한, 심적이든 물적이든 피해를 보기도 하고요. 지금 당장 우리만 봐도 세계어인 영어의 덕을 독특히 보고 있잖아요. 왜냐면, 우리도 지금 영어 덕택에 서로의 생각과 가치관을 말할 수도 있고 또 배우기도 하니까요. 이는 곧 문화교류이며 민간외교로 발전함을 의미합니다. 그런 의미에서 학생들과 나는 자기 나라에 큰 애국을 하고 있는 겁니다. 암튼, 내 생각에 세계 여행을 할 때, 가능한 한 사람을 많이 만나는 겁니다. 만남에는 길든 짧든, 내용이 뭐든 대화가 있게 마련이고, 그러다 보면 영어는 저절로 익숙해진다는 게 나의 경험입니다. 덤으로 애국자라는 선물도 받으니 얼마나 좋아요.

Q: 세계 여행을 항상 부인과 하시나요? 지금까지 몇 개국을 여행했으며, 다시 가고 싶은 나라가 있다면? 혹시 버킷 리스트에 아직 지워지지 않은 나라가 있다면 어디인가요?

A: 물론 함께 여행하지 못할 때도 많아요. 나라 수는 별 의미가 없는 것 같은데…글쎄요 아마 100개국 정도는 될 거에요. 그러나 버킷 리스트 목록은 계속 남아 있을 것 같습니다. 왜냐구요? 하나 지우고 나면 곧 또 다른 곳이 그 자리에 올라가니까요.

Q: 어떤 스타일의 여행을 좋아하나요? 체류형? 이동형? 자연친화적? 문명도시? 역사 유적지? 예술의 도시? 등등.

A: 역시 좋은 질문입니다. 그런데 유감스럽게도 내가 제일 좋아하는 이름이 빠졌네요.

Q: 정말이요? 그게 뭐에요?

A: 익스트림 스포츠라고나 할까. 가령, 사막 오토바이 타기, 사막 승마, 번지점프, 산악자전거, 암벽타기, 워터스키와 스노스키, 제트스키, 래프팅, 고산병 도전하기, 빙하트레킹, 절벽 다이빙, 등등. 그러나 아직 못해 본 게 더 많아요. 가령, 스카이다이빙, 행글라이딩, 급류래프팅, 빙벽타기, 서핑, 등등.

Q: 그저 정말 위험한 거 아닌가요? 그것도 부인과 함께 하나요?

A: 아니요. 혼자일 때만 합니다. 위험한 건 무조건 싫어하니까요. 물론 사고를 내니까 그렇습니다만.

(이쯤에서 내가 일방적으로 질문자가 되기로 했다.)

Q: 이제 내 순서일 것 같은데요. 괜찮겠지요?

A: (학생이 당황한 듯, 잠깐, 뜸을 들인 후). 네. 좋아요.

Q: 학생들은 대학을 선택하고 전공을 선택할 때 누구의 도움을 받나요? 아니면 자신이 직접 결정하나요?

A: 네. 제가 선택했어요. 부모님이 간섭하지 않았어요. (다른 학생들도 다들 고개를 끄덕인 걸 봐 직접 선택을 하는 것 같았다.)

Q: 국제학을 전공하는 특별한 이유가 있나요?

A: 물론입니다. 국제사회, 문화, 정치를 알아야 나도 발전하고 우리나라도 발전한다는 걸 절실히 느꼈기 때문입니다. (다른 학생들에게도 같은 질문을 했는데 역시 Me, too. 였다)

Q: 만약 외국 여행을 간다면 어느 나라를 먼저 가고 싶나요?

A: 미국이요.(이 질문을 받은 여섯 학생 중 정확히 세 명은 미국을, 나머진 한국을 택했다. 미국을 선택한 학생들은 세계 최강의 미국을 직접 가 보고 싶다는 이유였다. 한국은 달랐다. 자기 친인척 중 혹은 가까운 사람들로부터 한국에 대한 좋은 말과 한국의 성공 비결에 관한 얘길 듣고, 언젠가 직접 가 볼 결심을 했다는 것이다. 미국을 선택한 학생들에게 미국 어디를 먼저 가고 싶냐고 물었더니 이상하리만큼 다들 뉴욕의 자유의 여신상이라고 했다. 갑자기 꿈많은 어린 소녀들의 모습을 보는 듯했다.)

(그런데 이때, 한 학생이 내게 엉뚱한 질문을 했다.)

Q: 나는 이곳에서 태어났고 지금까지 우리나라 우즈벡에 대한 자부심은 한 번도 흔들린 적이 없는데요. 평화를 사랑하는 진짜 아름다운 나라이거든요. 그래서 우즈벡을 떠날 생각은 추호도 없습니다. 혹시 나처럼 당신이 만약 우즈벡에서 태어난다면 그런 자부심으로 우즈벡을 떠나지 않고 끝까지 지킬 의지가 있나요?

A: 물론이지요. 그건 선택이 아닌 필수지요. 누구나 자기 나라를 끝까지 지킬 의무가 있으니까요. 그러나 우물 안 개구리는 곤란해요. 더 넓고, 더 자유롭고, 더 번영하고, 더 아름다운 나라를 볼 수 없기 때문입니다. 비교 대상을 찾지 않거나, 찾지 못한다는 것은 곧 더 이상의 발전은 없다는 뜻입니다. 결국, 자신이 그토록 소중히 여기는 조국의 발전에 전혀 도움이 안 돼요. 그건 진정한 애국이 아닙니다. 사람은 죽을 때까지 배워야 합니다. 세계를 배워야 해요. 고대(古代) 페니키아에서 그리스 로마 그리고 중세를 거쳐 오늘날까지 세계의 중심에 우뚝 선 나라들은 배움의 행렬을 멈춘 적이 없어요. 물론 세계 여행도 포함됩니다. 목적은 하나. 부강한 힘을 바탕으로 문명을 꽃피우는 진짜 선진국이 되기 위해서입니다. 저기 서 있는 여러분의 영웅 ‘이미즈 티무르’의 기마상을 보세요. 얼마나 멋지고 든든해요. 만약 저분이 세계의 흐름에 눈을 감고 있었다면, 목숨 걸고 세계를 배우며 조국을 위해 싸우지 않았다면, 오늘날 여러분이 자랑스럽게 생각하는 이 아름다운 우즈베키스탄이 지금까지 존재할 수 있었을까요? 갑자기, 순간 다들 침묵 모드로 바뀌는 듯했다.

I thought that those students were very good at speaking American English due to their major being international studies. And I thought they seemed to have seen many Koreans who traveled to Uzbekistan asking the locals for directions and bargaining for goods in English at tourist attractions. I could fully imagine it in their next question.

Q: Are all Koreans good at English, like you? If so, what is the secret?

A: Of course, young people in Korea speak English as well as you. That's what happened after the world opened up. In short, it's frustrating if we can't speak English, which is common in the international community. It's not fun. Also, it can be damaged mentally or physically. I think right now we are uniquely benefiting from English, the world language. We can now know each other's thoughts and values through English. This means cultural exchange and the development of civilian diplomacy. In that sense, you and I have great patriotism for our countries. Well, I think one of the best ways to learn English is to meet as many people as possible when you travel around the world. Because meeting people means conversation. Any talk, long or short, is fine. That way, I think you get used to English.

Q: Do you always travel around the world with your wife? How many countries have you traveled to so far, and is there a country you want to visit again? Which country is still on your bucket list?

A: Of course, there are many times when we can't travel together. I didn't count the number of countries because it doesn't seem to mean much, but I think there are about 100 countries. But the bucket list is likely to remain. Why? If I erase one, another will soon be there.

.Q: What kind of travel style do you like? Staying type? Moving type? Nature-friendly? Civilized city? Historical sites? City of Art? And so on.

A: That's a good question, too. Unfortunately, my favorite name is missing there.

Q: Really?  What's that?

A: Extreme sports. For example, riding a motorcycle in the desert, horseback riding in the desert, bungee jumping, mountain biking, rock climbing, water skiing and snow skiing, jet skiing, rafting, challenging alpine diseases, glacial trekking, cliff diving, etc. But there's more I haven't done yet. For example, skydiving, hang gliding, torrent rafting, ice wall climbing, surfing, etc.

Q: Isn't it just really dangerous? Do you do that with your wife?

A: No. It's only possible when I'm alone. My wife hates dangerous things, no matter what.

.(At this point, I decided to be a questioner myself.)

Q: I think it's my turn now. Is it OK?

A: (a few minutes later) Yes. No problem. 

Q: Where do you get help with choosing a college or a major? Or do you decide for yourself?

A: I chose it. My parents didn't interfere. (Other students seemed the same as her.)

Q: Is there a special reason why you majored in international studies?

A: Of course. It's because I felt desperately that not only I but also my country would develop if I knew the international community, culture, and politics. I asked other students the same question, and they agreed.

Q: If you travel abroad, which country do you want to go to first?

A: The United States.

(Exactly three of the six students who were asked this question chose the United States, and the rest chose Korea. Students who chose the U.S. wanted to visit the world's strongest country in person. Others were different. After hearing good things about Korea and the secret of Korea's success from their relatives or close friends, they decided to go there one day. When I asked the students who chose the U.S. where they wanted to go first, they said it was the Statue of Liberty in New York. Suddenly, they appeared to be dreamy little girls.)

(But at this time, a student asked me an unexpected question.)

Q: I was born here, and my pride in Uzbekistan has never been shaken. It's a really beautiful country that loves peace. If you were born in Uzbekistan like me, would you be willing to keep Uzbekistan until the end without leaving it like me?

A: Of course. It's a necessity, not a choice. Everyone has a duty to protect their country until the end. But the life of the frog in the small pond is not desirable. This is because frogs cannot see a wider, freer, more prosperous, and more beautiful country. If you don't find a comparison target, it means you don't want any further development. After all, it doesn't help the development of the country you cherish so much. That is not true patriotism. People should always learn. We have to learn about the world. From ancient Phoenician to Greek, Roman, and medieval times, the world's leading nations have never stopped learning. Of course, it includes traveling around the world. There is only one purpose. It's to become a truly advanced country that blooms civilization based on its rich power. Look at the equestrian statue of your hero, Imizu Timur, standing there. It's so cool and reliable. If he had closed his eyes to the flow of the world, if he hadn't risked his life to learn the world and fight for his country, would this beautiful Uzbekistan that you are proud of today exist? (All of a sudden, everyone was quiet.)
