부하라(Bukhare)에서 우리가 묵은 숙소는 10인실도 안 되는 조그만 곳이었다. 위치도 약간 비탈진 곳에, 길도 좁아서 썩 호감(好感)이 가는 곳은 아니었다. 그런데도 이곳을 선택한 것은 ‘부라하’의 하이라이트인 ‘콜론 미나렛’이 가까이 있었기 때문이다. 일본인과 서구인들 단체 관광객들은 거의 다 평지에 있는 호텔에 묵었다. 이곳 올드타운의 특징은 다 옛 건물이어서 호텔도 레스토랑도 2~3층 이상 되는 곳을 볼 수 없었다는 것.

우리 숙소에는 현지인 대학생이 알바를 하고 있었다. 그는 21세로 대학 3학년생. 아주 근면(勤勉)하고 성실(誠實)했다. 한가한 시간을 이용해 궁금한 점을 몇 개 물었다.

Q: 학생은 이곳에서 알바를 하면 좋은 점이 뭐에요?

A: 좋은 점은 딱 하나입니다. 외국인과 대화 할 기회가 많으므로 영어를 배울 수 있다는 겁니다. 나에겐 영어가 꼭 필요하거든요.

Q: 그렇군요. 전공이 뭔데요?

A: 러시아어입니다. 러시아어 교사가 되고 싶었거든요. 그런데 생각이 바뀌었습니다. 아무리 생각해도 역시 미래는 러시아어권이 아니라 영어권임을 알게 된 거죠.

Q: 늦었다고 생각될 때가 가장 빠르다는 말이 있지요. 생각을 바꾼다는 게 쉬운 게 아닌데~~. 암튼, 어떤 결정적 계기가 있었나요?

A: 물론입니다. 전공과 상관없이 영어 실력이 좋으면 취업이 잘 되고, 임금도 높다는 걸 뒤늦게 알게 된 겁니다. 미국에서 살다 온 사람한데 직접 들었습니다.

Q: 실례지만 이곳에선 대졸자의 월급이 어느 정도인지 물어봐도 될까요?

A: 보통 200달러~400달러인데요, 문제는 일자리가 없다는 겁니다. 그래서 우즈벡 사람들이 한국을 포함 외국으로 많이 나가려고 합니다. 그것도 매우 어렵지만요. 비자 받기가 하늘의 별 따기입니다. 한국인은 우즈벡을 무비자로 오지만, 우린 그게 안 됩니다. 정말 굉장히 힘들어요. 옛날엔 한국이 우즈벡보다 훨씬 못 살았다는데…. 정말 부럽습니다.

Q: 그 말은 맞아요. 우리도 나라가 가난할 땐 그랬거든요. 지금은 다릅니다. 한국 여권이면 세계 174개국을 무비자로 갈 수 있어요. 그러나 실망하지 마세요. 우즈벡은 땅도 넓고 자원도 많으므로 곧 성공한 나라가 될 겁니다.

A: 그렇게 생각하세요? 그런 희망이 안 보이는데요. 만약 우즈벡 사람도 한국인들처럼 무비자로 자유롭게 세계 여행을 할 수 있다면 소원이 없겠습니다만.

Q: 만약 그렇게 된다면 어느 나라를 제일 먼저 여행하고 싶으세요?

A: 당연히 미국입니다. 내가 지금까지 들었던 대로 미국이 정말 그렇게 크고 다양하고 위대한 지 직접 가서 확인하고 싶은 겁니다.

Q: 결혼 문화에 대해서 궁금한 게 있습니다. 내가 알기론 모슬렘의 결혼은 연애결혼을 허용하지 않는다고 하던데 그게 사실인가요? 그리고 결혼 적령기를 여자는 17~19세, 남자는 20~22세라고 하던데 정말인가요? 그리고 또 있습니다. 인도 여행 때, 무슬림 남자와 식사를 함께 하면서 들은 얘기인데, 남자에겐 지참금(Dowry)이 가장 큰 부담이라고 하던데, 여기도 그런가요?

A: 아닙니다. 많이 변했습니다. 옛날엔 결혼을 친인척을 포함한 가족 공동체의 행사로 간주했기 때문에 개인이 결정할 수 없었습니다. 지금은 아닙니다. 적어도 우즈벡은 아니라고 생각합니다.

Q: 우즈벡 사람들의 결혼 비용은 얼마나 들어요? 가령 한국의 경우, 살림집을 장만하는데 가장 큰돈이 들거든요.

A: 우즈벡 사람들은 결혼 비용을 주로 남자가 부담하는데, 집이 문제가 아니라, 결혼식 그 자체의 비용이 제일 많이 들어요. 말하자면 결혼식 후 베푸는 손님 접대 잔치가 그렇습니다. 가문의 체면을 중시하기 때문인데요. 이건 정말 아니라고 생각합니다. 그러나 이것이 아직 우즈벡의 전통이고 관습입니다. 이것도 곧 변할 것으로 믿습니다.

Q: 우즈벡에서는 외국인 여행자가 한 곳에 3일 이상 체류하면 거주 등록을 해야 한다고 하는데, 이건 너무 오래된 제도 아닌가요? 사실 우리가 17년 전에 러시아에 갔을 때도 그런 말은 들었지만 실제로는 그것을 요구하는 걸 못 봤거든요. 그리고 중국에서도 가령 1900년대에는 러시아처럼 거주 등록을 요구한 건 아니지만 외국인은 반드시 호텔에서만 묵어야 한다는 강제규정 때문에 불편이 많았습니다. 그러나 그런 제도는 러시아도 중국도 다 공산주의 국가였으니까 그렇다고 생각했지요. 물론 지금은 다 없어진 거로 압니다. 하여튼 우즈벡에서 아직 이런 제도를 고수(固守)한다는 게 매우 어색합니다. 어쨌든 우리도 이곳에 3일 이상 묵으므로 거주 등록을 해야지요?

A: 걱정 마세요. 물론 거주 등록증을 발급합니다만, 아직 그 문제로 피해를 보았다는 말을 들은 적은 없습니다. 공항에서 출국할 땐 가끔 확인한다는 말을 듣긴 했지만요.

아마 내가 세계 여행 중 그들과 대화를 시도하지 않았다면, 이곳 우즈벡 부하라의 젊은이는 물론 파키스탄과 인도네시아 그리고 아르헨티나와 남아공 등, 수많은 세계인으로부터 대한민국을 그토록 부러워하는 줄 몰랐을 것이다. 나는 그런 기분 좋은 말을 계속 듣기 위해서도 그들과의 대화를 멈출 수 없을 것 같다.

The hotel we stayed at in Bukhara was a small one with fewer than 10 rooms. The location of the hotel was a bit steep, and the road was narrow, so it wasn't a very pleasant place. Nevertheless, we chose this hotel because it was close to the 'Colon Minaret', a highlight of Buraha's attractions. Groups of Japanese and Westerners mostly stayed in hotels on flat ground away from the Minaret of Colon. The characteristic of the old town here was that it was all old buildings, so I couldn't see any hotels or restaurants higher than the 2nd or 3rd floor.

A local college student was working part-time at our hostel. He was 21 years old and a junior in college. He was a very hardworking and sincere guy. I used his free time to ask him some questions.

Q: I wonder what the benefits are to you if you work part-time here as a student.

A: There is only one good thing about it. I can learn English because I have many opportunities to talk with foreigners. I really need English, you know.

Q: Very true. What’s your major?

A: Russian. I wanted to become a Russian teacher. But I changed my idea. When I thought about it again, I realized that the future world where I will be active is not a Russian-speaking area but an English-speaking one.

Q: I remember the saying that when we think it's too late, it's the fastest. Well, I think it's not easy for someone to change their fixed mind. Anyway, what was the decisive factor?

A: Surly. Regardless of my major, I found out belatedly that if my English skills are good, I will get a good job, and my pay will be high. I heard it from someone who lived in the United States.

Q: Well, may I ask what’s the salary of a college graduate here in Uzbekistan?

A: It's usually between $200 and $400 a month, but the problem is that there are no jobs. That's why many Uzbeks are trying to go abroad, including to Korea. It's also very difficult. Sadly, as you know, getting a Korean visa is almost impossible. Koreans come to Uzbekistan without a visa, but we are not allowed to do that. It's really, really hard. I know that Korea was much worse than Uzbekistan in the past. So I know you’re all proud of your country, Koreaa.

Q: You’re right. We were like that when Korea was poor. It's different now. With a Korean passport, I can visit 174 countries around the world without a visa. But don't be discouraged. I’m sure Uzbekistan is vast and has many resources. It means that your country will soon become a successful Uzbek. Moreover, you have a great history in the past.

A: You think so? Well, hopefully, Uzbeks dream of traveling around the world without a visa, just like Koreans.

Q: Trust me. Anyway, if so, which country would you like to travel to first?

A: Of course it’s the United States. I want to go see for myself if America really is as big, diverse, and great as I've been told.

Q: Another question about your marriage culture. As far as I know, Muslim marriages don’t allow love marriages. Is that true? And they say that the age of marriage is 17–19 for girls and 20–22 for boys, right? When I was traveling in India, I heard a new story while having a meal with a Muslim man. According to him, a man's dowry is the biggest burden. Is that the case here too?

A: No. Not any more. In the old days, marriage was considered an event for the family community, including relatives, and could not be decided by individuals. Not now. At least not Uzbeks, I think.

Q: How much does an Uzbek wedding cost? For example, in Korea, it costs the most money to get a house to live in.

A: In Uzbekistan, men usually pay the cost of marriage, but the wedding itself costs the most, not the house. In other words, it is the reception for guests after the wedding. It's because we value the face of the family. I think this one, too, should go away quickly. Anyway I think it’s still an Uzbek tradition and custom. Maybe it’ll soon be gone too.

Q: In Uzbekistan, foreign travelers are required to register for residence if they stay in one place for more than 3 days. Isn't it a very old system? Actually, I heard that when we visited Russia 17 years ago, we didn't see anyone actually asking for it. And in China, for example, in the 1900s, residence registration was not required as in Russia, but there was a lot of inconvenience due to the forced regulation that foreigners must stay only in hotels, no guesthouse. However, I thought it was because Russia and China were both communist countries. Of course, I know that those systems are gone now. Anyway, it’s very awkward that Uzbekistan still adheres to this system. Anyway, we will be staying here for more than 3 days, so we have to register for residence, right?

A: Don't worry about it. Of course, I will issue you a resident registration card, but I’ve not yet heard of any damage caused by it. However, I’ve heard that they sometimes check foreigners to see if they have it or not when leaving Tashkent Airport. So it's better to have it ready just in case, I think.

If I hadn't had conversations with people around the world while traveling abroad, I wouldn‘t have known that many young people from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Argentina, and S. Africa were so envious of Korea. So, I’ll keep talking with them and hearing from them that Korea is amazing and great
