사마르칸트의 대표적 볼거리는 레기스탄 광장과 비비하눔 모스크일 것이다. 실제로 와 보니 고개가 절로 끄덕여졌다. 일단 두 곳의 공통점은 엄청난 규모의 건축물(모스크)이란 점. 다른 점은 전자(前者)는 마드라사(이슬람 신학교) 즉 학문(이성)의 전당(殿堂)이고, 후자는 러브스토리가 담겨있는 인간적(감성) 영역이란 점이다. 이처럼 순애보(殉愛譜)와 관련된 역사물은 세계사에서 한둘이 아니다. 우선, 타지마할이 그렇다. 인도 샤자왕(1592~1666)이 왕비 ‘뭄타즈 마할’을 위해 아그라에 세운 것이 그렇고, 이집트의 장제전(葬祭殿)도 그렇다. 이 거대한 축조물은 ‘하트셉수트’ 여왕(BC1507~BC1458)의 연인(戀人)이 만들었다. 그는 여왕의 딸을 가르치던 가정교사이자 천재 건축가였던 페르시아인 센무트(Senmut)였다. 나는 이 두 곳을 1990~2010년 사이 두 번씩 직접 가보았다.

‘아미르 티무르’(Amir Temur-1336~1405)는 제국(諸國)을 통치한 유명한 정복(征服) 군주들(알렉산더, 시저, 칭기즈칸, 아틸라, 오스만, 나폴레옹…)중 한 명이다. 그는 재위 기간 35년 중 정작 자신의 제국(帝國)인 사마르칸트에 머문 기간은 불과(不過) 2~3년 정도. 한번 원정(遠征) 나갔다 하면 3~7년. 대부분 정복자처럼 그의 일생(一生)도 내내 정복사업에 바쳤다(델리를 포함 바그다드, 다마스쿠스, 이스파한, 앙카라 등 몽골 제국과 오스만제국을 초토화하고 이도 부족해 아프리카와 중국 러시아까지 일부 먹었거나 넘봤다). 당시 세계를 공포로 몰아넣은 칭기즈칸과 진배없었다.

**우즈벡을 포함 이탈리아 마케도니아 몽골 터키 포르투갈 스페인 프랑스 영국 네덜란드 등, 이 나라 사람들로부터 성공한 대한민국을 부러워하거나 칭찬을 들을 때, 나는 항상 이렇게 말했다. “감사합니다. 한편 나는 진정 당신의 나라가 부럽습니다. 세계 무대에서 당신네처럼 정복 국가의 지위(地位)를 누려본 역사가 없기 때문입니다. 나는 지금도 한국인들 스스로가 우리 역사에서 한국은 외침을 960번이나 받았다는 말을 제일 듣기 싫어합니다. 너무 자존심이 상해서요. 피해의식의 노예근성과 다름없거든요.”

본론: 이 거대한 비비-하눔 모스크(Bibi-Khanym Mosque)는 약 10,000명을 수용할 수 있는 중앙아시아에서 가장 큰 모스크이다. 이것이 탄생한 배경에는 순애보(殉愛譜)적 러브스토리가 담겨있다. 우선 ‘우아하고 지혜로운 여인’이란 의미의 ‘비비 하눔’이란 이름이 예사롭지 않다. 매우 시적(詩的)이며 신비의 전설이 녹아 있다. 전설에 따르면 티무르는 10여 명의 부인을 뒀는데 그들 중 유독 비비 하눔만을 지극히 아끼고 사랑했다고. 이에 대한 감사의 징표(徵表)로 비비 하눔은 티무르가 인도(印度) 원정을 떠나 있는 5년 동안 세상에서 가장 크고 위대한 모스크를 지어 위대한 정복왕 티무르왕이 돌아올 때 그에게 깜짝 선물로 진상(進上)하려고 했다. 그녀는 국내외(國內外)에서 가장 유명한 건축가와 조각가와 석공 등 500여 명과 잡부 5000여 명 그리고 코끼리 100여 마리를 작업에 투입했다.

이 거대한 모스크는 공기(工期)에 차질없이 진행됐다. 왕비는 보기만 해도 흐뭇했다. 가로 167m, 세로 109m의 사각형 회랑(廻廊)에 50m 높이의 거대한 미나렛(첩탑)은 압권이었다. 또 다른 주요 부분인 거대한 돔(dome)도 음영(陰影)의 신비를 지닌 푸른색 타일로 장식(粧飾) 완료됐다. 이제 내부 바닥과 벽에 대리석과 테라코타(terra cotta)와 윤기 나는 모자이크 그리고 푸른색과 금색으로 그려진 프레스코의 마무리 작업만 남았다. 그런데 웬일인지 여기서부터 작업 속도가 나지 않았다. 티무르왕이 당당히 개선(凱旋)할 날은 코앞에 다가오는데. 비비 하눔 왕비가 총책(總責)인 건축가를 불러 그 이유를 물었다. 황당한 답을 들었다. 즉 그 건축가는 왕비를 보는 순간, 연정(戀情)에 빠졌다는 것. 지금껏 용케 견뎠는데 이젠 한계에 도달했다는 것. 일이 손에 잡히지 않는다는 일종의 고해성사(告解聖事)를 한 것이다.

그를 돌려보낸 왕비는 곧 서너 명의 몸종들과 함께 몇 개의 달걀에 각각 다른 색깔을 칠해놓고 그를 다시 불렀다. 그에게 계란을 보여주며, “보다시피 겉모습은 달라도 껍질을 벗기고 보면 속은 다 같소이다. 그러니 여기 있는 시녀(侍女)나 왕비인 나도 속은 같다는 뜻이오. 괘념(掛念)치 말고 이들 중 아무나 선택하는 게 좋을 듯하오. 말없이 되돌아간 그는 곧 두 개의 물컵에 물을 담아 와서 말했다. “우아하고 지혜로우신 왕비시여, 이 두 개의 잔 속에 있는 물은 보기는 같으나 맛은 다릅니다. 이건 설탕물이고 이건 맹물이기 때문입니다. 혜량(惠諒)하여 주옵소서.” 말싸움에서 이길 자신이 없다고 생각한 왕비는 그가 원하는 키스(입맞춤) 대신에 볼맞춤을 허락했다. 단 왕비의 손으로 자신의 볼을 덮은 손등에만 하는 키스였다. 그 손등맞춤 키스는 너무나 강렬하고 뜨거워서 한동안 떨어지지 않았다. 소원성취한 그는 약속대로 기대 이상의 세기의 명물(名物), ‘비비 하눔 모스크’를 창조해냈다.

인도(印度) 원정을 마치고 개선(凱旋)한 티무르 왕은 비비 하눔 왕비로부터 받은 여태껏 보지 못한 거대하고 우아한 모스크에 감동했다. 한동안 모스크를 바라본 뒤 왕은 왕비의 볼에 키스를 하려는 찰라, 왕은 왕비의 볼에 입술 흔적이 있음을 보고 깜짝 놀라 한발 물러섰다. 그러자 입술 흔적이 사라졌다. 다시 다가가 볼에 키스를 하려고 하면 또 입술 흔적이 나타났다. 왕비의 볼에 남아 있던 건축가의 강렬하고 뜨거웠던 키스의 흔적이 화학적 반응을 보인 것이다. 왕은 노발대발했다. 그 건축가를 참수(斬首)하기 직전 왕은 분(忿)을 못 이겨 왕비와 그를 카펫으로 둘둘 말아 50m 높이의 미나렛에서 내던지라고 명령했다. 내던져진 왕비와 건축가는 펼쳐진 카펫을 타고 그 첨탑과 돔 주위를 세바퀴 돈 뒤 땅에 내려 왕에게 삼배구고두례(三拜九叩頭禮)한 뒤 카펫을 타고 사라졌다.

그녀와 그는 명(明)나라 출신이었다. 그들의 모습을 본 뒤 뒤늦게 후회한 왕은 왕비와 건축가의 인간적 러브스토리에 감동, 그들이 남긴 세기(世紀)의 걸작품을 ‘비비 하룸’(우아하고 지혜로운 여인)이라고 부르도록 명했다고 한다. (내가 이곳 현지인들과 이곳을 방문한 외국인 관광객으로부터 들은 얘기도 이 범주에서 크게 벗어나지 않는다. 엄청난 관광객 수에 놀랐다. 역시 러브스토리의 힘은 언제 어디서든 수퍼파워였다. 믿거나 말거나.)

Registan Square and the Bibi-Khanum Mosque, in my opinion, are the most iconic sights in Samarkand. It all made sense when I got there. First and foremost, the two locations had one thing in common: they were both massive structures (mosques). The distinction is that the former was a madrasah (Islamic seminary) or a hall of learning (reason), whereas the latter was a human (emotional) world, including love stories. There are numerous historical works in world history that are related to this love story. The Taj Mahal in India and the Egyptian funeral house are identical. It was created in Agra by King Shah Jahan of India (1592–1666) for his queen, Mumtaz Mahal. The funeral hall in Egypt was created by Queen Hatshepsut's lover (BC 1507–BC 1530).

'Amir Temur' (1336-1405), was one of the empire's great conquering rulers (Alexander, Caesar, Genghis Khan, Attila, Osman, Napoleon, and others). During his 35-year rule, he spent just two to three years in Samarkand, his own dominion. It took him three to seven years to complete a trip. He committed his entire life to conquest, as most conquerors do (he destroyed the Mongol Empire and the Ottoman Empire, including Delhi, Baghdad, Damascus, Isfahan, and Ankara; he also took sections of Africa, China, and Russia). He was not unlike Genghis Khan, who frightened the world at the time.

**Italy, Macedonia, Mongolia, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, France, England, the Netherlands, and other countries are included in my thoughts. I always said when people from these countries expressed jealousy or praise for Korea's growth. "Thank you. On the other hand, you make me envious. Because I've never felt that my country, Korea, had the majesty of a conquering nation on the international stage." Even now, I dislike hearing Koreans assert that Korea has been attacked 960 times by foreign countries throughout its history. Because it's embarrassing for me. To summarize, I abhor victim mentality and enslavement.

Body: This huge Bibi-Khanym Mosque is the largest one in Central Asia and can be prayed for by about 10,000 people. The background of this birth contains a pure love story. First of all, the name Bibi-Hanum, which means "elegant and wise woman," is unusual. It is very poetic and contains a mysterious legend. Legend has it that King Timur loved Bibi-Hanum, one of his ten wives. As a token of gratitude for this, Bibi-Hanum built the world's largest and greatest mosque during Timur's five years on an expedition to India and tried to give him a surprise gift when the great conquest king Timur returned. She enlisted the help of almost 500 people, including some of the world's most distinguished architects, sculptors, and masons, as well as 5,000 more laborers and 100 elephants.

This massive mosque went off without a hitch. Just gazing at it made the queen happy. The massive minaret with a height of 50 meters in particular was a work of beauty. Another key component, the massive dome, was likewise finished with tiles of the enigmatic hue blue. The finishing touches of marble, terra cotta, gleaming mosaics, and blue and gold frescoes on the interior floors and walls were all that remained. However, for some reason, the work did not accelerate from here. The day when King Timur would triumph magnificently was approaching. Queen Bibi Hanum summoned the chief architect and inquired as to the reason. She received an insane response. In other words, the architect fell in love the moment he saw the queen. He's come this far, but he's reached his breaking point. He made a sort of confession to her.

After he was returned, the queen, together with three or four maids, painted additional colored eggs and summoned him again. "As you can see, the outside looks different, but when you peel it off, the inside is the same," she says as she shows him the eggs. So the lady-in-waiting and the queen here are likewise the same on the inside. You should pick one of these without hesitation. He returned without saying anything and soon returned with two glasses of water, saying, "My elegant and wise queen, the water in these two cups looks the same, but tastes different." Because there is sugar water and plain water. Please bear with me." His brilliant suggestion was approved by the queen. The queen agreed. Instead of the kiss he desired, the queen allowed him to kiss him on the cheek. The kiss was merely on the back of the queen's hand, which was covering her cheek. The back of the hand kiss was so powerful and hot that it stayed on for quite some time. After fulfilling his dream, he built the 'Bibi Hanum Mosque,' a century-old landmark that exceeded expectations.

King Timur, who had returned from his journey to India, was amazed by the massive and exquisite mosque built by Queen Bibi Hanum, which he had never seen before. After looking at the mosque for a bit, the king was going to kiss the queen on the cheek when he noticed a weird lip mark on her cheek. The remnants of the lips then vanished. When he approached her and attempted to kiss her on the cheek, traces of his lips resurfaced once more. The architect's powerful and heated kiss left traces on the queen's cheek, indicating a chemical reaction. The king was enraged. In a moment of wrath just before executing the architect, the monarch ordered the queen and him to be wrapped in a carpet and hurled from the 50-meter-high minaret. After being thrown out, the queen and architect climbed on the unfolded carpet, circled the spire and dome three times, landed on the ground, bowed to the king, and vanished on the carpet.

He and her were both from Ming. The story of the queen and the architect's human love touched the king, who ordered the mosque of Bibi-hanum (a graceful and wise woman) to be the masterpiece of the century they left behind. The stories I heard from locals and foreign tourists who came here were identical to mine. The large number of tourists who came here startled me. The power of love stories has proven to be great whenever and wherever, as expected. Whether you believe it or not.
