  계속 이어진 내 생애(生涯) 즐거운 일들: 어느 날 오후, 나를 깜짝 놀라게 하는 일이 생겼다. 우리 가게에 키 큰 외국인 두 사람이 들어온 것이다. 한 분은 중절모자를 쓰고 옅은 색의 선글라스를 섰다. 다른 분은 보통 서구인(西歐人) 외모(外貌)였다. 직원이 얼떨떨하는 것을 보고 내가 나섰다. 간혹 외국인들이 팝송이나 클래식 레코드를 구입(購入)하러 오기도 하니까. 그런데 두 양반 가운데 모자를 쓴 분이 나에게 미소를 지으며 물었다. “혹시, 지난주 한밤중에 저 언덕에서 잠깐 만난 분 아니세요?”
  
  그때에야 나는 알아차렸다. “아, 생각이 나요. 그날 밤은 비가 오는 아주 어두운 밤이었지요. 그리고 당신은 그때 두 명의 동네 애들과 우산을 가지고 놀고 있었어요. 그땐 모자를 안 쓰고 있었구요” “맞아요. 그때 당신은 내게 이곳에 가게를 가지고 있는 사장이라고 하면서 언제든지 놀러 오라고 했어요. 그래서 오늘 난 내 친구와 함께 놀러 왔어요.” “잘 오셨습니다. 여기 편안히 앉으셔도 됩니다. 그날 밤 제가 말씀을 드렸듯이 이곳에서는 제가 보스니까요, 하하.” 이렇게 대화는 이어져갔다.
  
  A: 밤에 만났던 외국인, B: 함께 오신 외국인, C: 나
  
  C: 그날 밤, 집에는 잘 들어가셨나요?
  A: 물론이지요. 우리 집은 바로 근처에 있어요.
  C: 바로 근처라면 혹시 서강대학교를 말씀하시는 건가요?
  A: 맞아요.
  C: 그러시군요. 그럼, 서강 대학교 교수님이시네요.
  A: 네, 맞아요. 나는 거기서 학생을 가르쳐요.
  
  C: 그럼, 당신도 서강대 교수이신가요?
  B: 네, 그렇습니다. 저는 이 친구로부터 당신의 이야기를 들었어요.
  C: 그래요? 무슨 이야기를 들었는데요?
  B: 이 친구가 말했어요. 영어를 잘하는 젊은 한국인 사장을 만났다고요.
  A: 맞아요. 내가 학교 친구들에게 당신 이야기를 많이 했어요.
  
  알고 보니 이분들은 40대 후반의 미국인들이고 또한 신부님들이며 교수(敎授)였다. 한 분은 사학과 교수이고 또 한 분은 영문학과 교수였다. 이렇게 첫 만남이 있고 난 뒤 이분들이 내 가게에 들르는 횟수가 점점 늘어났다. 물론 어떤 때는 세 분이 혹은 네 분이 올 때도 있었다. 그리고 언제나 나는 이분들을 환영했다. 하던 일도 멈추고 대화의 장을 열었다. 어떤 때는 가게 안에서 맥주를 마시며 대화를 즐겼고, 또 어떤 때는 아예 근처의 전기통닭(당시 유행) 생맥줏집에서 저녁 늦게(통금 직전)까지 얘기하고 놀았다.
  
  이때 내가 알게 된 건 술을 마시면 희한하게도 영어가 술술 잘 나왔다는 것. 이분들의 공통점은 한국에 온 지 몇 개월 되지 않았다는 것이고, 아직 한국말은 기초 수준에 머물러 있었다는 것. 이분들은 나에게 묻는 것이 많았다. 주로 한국의 음식, 인사법, 물건 사는 법 등이었다. 어떤 분은 사투리만 모아서 특히 경상도 사투리만 적어 와서 물어보기도 했다. 내 말투가 경상도 사투리니까. 그러나 이분들은 나와 친해지면서 내가 어떻게 일찍 기술을 배우고 또 사장이 됐으며, 영어는 언제 어디서 어떻게 배웠는지에 더 관심이 많았다.
  
  정말 자주 만났다. 몇 개월이 지난 어느 날, 이분들 가운데 한 분인 짐 신부님이 나에게 전혀 예상치 못한 제안을 했다. 아니, 너무나 뜻밖이라서 나는 놀라움과 동시에 혹시 날 놀리는 게 아닐까 하는 의심도 했다. 왜냐면 그동안 나는 그분들에게 많은 대화를 통해 나에 관한 이야기를 다 털어놓았기 때문이다. 물론 대학은커녕 야간 중학교도 다니다 그만뒀다는 이야기를 포함해서.
  
  내용은 이랬다. 서강대학교에는 미국인을 포함한 아일랜드계 필리핀계 독일계 신부님들이 많은데 그분들 가운데 한 분이 한국어 개인지도를 받고 싶다고 해서 나를 소개했다는 것이다. 사실, 알고 봤더니 한국에 오는 외국인들은 대부분 연세 한국어 학당에서 혹은 광화문의 명도원(후에 폐원함)에서 한국어를 배웠다. 그러나 가끔 시간상 어려움 때문에 혹은 수업 진도를 따르지 못해서 한국인에게 개인지도를 받는 경우가 더러 있었다.
  
  조건은 이러했다. 시간은 하루에 한 시간씩 주(週) 5일, 장소는 서강대 본관 내(內)의 사제관(司祭館) 내빈실(來賓室)에서. 보수(報酬)는 얼마 등 이런 내용이었다. 나는 무조건 ‘OK’라고 하고 싶었지만, 자신이 없었다. 이런 분야엔 전혀 경험도 없었고 특히 귀가 따갑게 들었던 학벌(學閥) 중시 사회의 현실을 감안(勘案)할 때 선뜻 응할 수 없었다.
  
  이 문제 때문에 마음이 내키지 않는다고 내 입장을 솔직히 얘기했더니, 이분은 웃으면서 한마디로, “노, 프라브럼. 대학이 왜 필요해요? 당신은 이미 한국말도 영어도 잘해요. 그것이면 충분해요.”였다. 마치 그동안 나를 꾸준히 관찰했다는 뜻으로 느껴졌다. 어쨌든, 나는 이 말에 용기를 얻어 응낙(應諾)했다. 나는 이날부터 가슴이 두근거려 일이 손에 잡히지 않았다. 과연 내가 할 수 있을까??? (7부 계속)

  Big turning events in my life continued: one afternoon, something unexpected happened. Two tall strangers came inside my shop. One of them was wearing a soft hat and light-colored sunglasses. The second individual appeared to be a typical Westerner. I came up to them after seeing the personnel puzzled. Foreigners occasionally visited to purchase hit tunes or vintage redords. But one of the two gentleman in caps smiled and inquired. "Aren't you the person I met last week on that hill in the middle of the night?“
  
  
  It was only then that I realized, "Oh, that's right. That night was incredibly gloomy and wet. At the time, you were playing with an umbrella with two local kids. You weren't wearing a cap at the time." "That's correct. You informed me at the time that you had a store here and invited me to come over whenever I wanted. So I dropped by today with a friend of mine." "Welcome. You can sit here comfortably. I'm in charge here, like I said that night." The dialogue continued as follows:
  
  A: a foreigner I met late at night, B is A's friend, and C is mine.
  
  C: Did you arrive safely home that night?
  A: Sure. My residence is only a few steps away.
  C: Do you mean Sogang University, which is close by?

  C: So you must also be a professor at Sogang University, right?
  B: I am, indeed. He told me about your story.
  C: Is that so? I wonder what he told you about me.
  B: He stated that he met a young Korean boss who is fluent in English.
  A: That's correct. At school, I told my friends a lot about you.
  
  It found out that these gentlemen were priests and academics from the United States, both in their late 40s. The first was a history professor, while the second taught English. These individuals began visiting my shop more frequently after our initial interaction. Occasionally, three or four showed up, of course. They were always welcome, too. I stopped what I was doing and started talking. Sometimes we talked while drinking beer in my store, and other times we talked till late at night in a nearby restaurant serving draft beer. (Sinchon Rotary at the time had a large number of electric-grilled entire chicken bars.)
  
  At the time, I noticed that when I drank, my English came out of my mouth quite nicely. They had one thing in common: they had only been in Korea for a few months. They said that their Korean was still at a basic level. They bombarded me with questions. It was mostly about Korean food, greeting people, and purchasing items. Some just collected dialects, particularly the Gyeongsang-do dialect, and posed questions. Because they were already aware that I was from Busan, Gyeongsang Province. However, as they became closer to me, they were more interested in how I obtained my talents and became boss, as well as when, when, and how I learned English.
  
  We met frequently. Several months later, one of them, Father Jim, made me an entirely unexpected idea. No, it was so unexpected that I was both astonished and suspicious that he was making fun of me. Meanwhile, I've told them everything they need to know about me in several chats.   The facts were as follows: There were several Irish, Filipino, and German priests, as well as Americans, at Sogang University. One of them required Korean instruction. As a result, he introduced me to him. In reality, as I noticed, the majority of foreigners who visited Korea learned Korean at Yonsei Korean Language Institute or Myeongdowon in Gwanghwamun. However, owing to time limits or challenges, some students could be unable to keep up with the lesson. In certain circumstances, such persons got specific guidance from Koreans.
  
  The following were the conditions: The timing was one hour every day, five days a week, and the location was the guest room of the priest's residence at Sogang University's main building. What was the tuition, etc. I wanted to say 'OK' without hesitation, but I wasn't sure. I had no expertise in this subject, and given the reality of Korean culture, which prized academic achievement, which pricked my ears, I couldn't immediately answer.
  
  When I informed him honestly about my lack of confidence on this topic, he grinned and stated, "No, problem. What is the point of going to college? You are fluent in both Korean and English. That is enough." It seemed to imply that he had been watching me all along. Anyway, I gathered up the confidence to say it and agreed.
