마침내 며칠 후 서강대 사제관 내빈실에서 당사자 분을 만났다. 50대 필리핀계 미국인 신부님이었다. 너무나 밝고 환한 얼굴과 미소에 긴장감이 순식간에 사라져버렸다. 교재는 명도원에서 사용했던 것과 예일대의 한국어 교본(敎本)을 쓰기로 했다. 중간중간에 가끔 교재의 예문(例文)을 응용하긴 했지만, 주로 묻고 답하는 대화체(對話體)를 기본으로 했다. 한국어로 말하는, 언어 소통력을 키우는 것이 우선이었기 때문이다.
  
  정말 재미있는 현상은 이분은 말끝마다 고개를 저으며, “한국말 너무 어려워요. 너무 복잡해요. 머리가 아파요”였다. 그러면 나는, “아니요. 한국말은 아주 쉬워요. 한두 달만 연습하면 누구나 다 한국말을 읽고 쓰고 말할 수 있어요. 제 말을 믿어 보세요. 진짜 어려운 건 영어에요. 영어는 너무 어려워서 아무리 연습해도 금방 까먹고 발음도 잘 안 돼요. 발음 구조도 복잡하고요. 특히 한국어에는 없는 발음을 하려면 너무 힘들어요.” 물론 이런 얘기는 서로 영어로 했다.
  
  내가 이런 말을 하면 그분은 곧바로 되받아서 다시 말했다. “아니요. 영어가 제일 쉬워요. 영어는 아주 간단해요. 예를 들어볼게요. 영어로 ‘나’는 ‘아이’/ ‘당신’은 ‘유’/ ‘여자’는 ‘쉬’/ ‘남자’는 ‘히’/ ‘우리’는 ‘위’/ 이렇게 하나만 알면 돼요. 맞지요? 영어는 이렇게 간단하고 쉬워요. 그러나 한국어는 자기를 나/저/내/자신/본인/소저/소자/소생/…그리고 ‘당신’을 너/네/당신/니/댁/선생/임자/자네/자기/…아이구 너무 복잡하고 어려워요. 내 말이 맞지요?”라고 강조했다. 사실, 나는 이와 같은 내용을 다른 외국인들을 가르칠 때도 들을 수밖에 없었다.
  
  (참고:가장 설명하기 힘든 한국어 단어 중 하나는 ‘기분’이었다. 예일대 ‘한국어 교본’ 첫 장에도 기분이란 단어가 소개돼 있을 정도였다. 한국인과 잘 지내려면 꼭 ‘기분’의 뜻을 먼저 배워야 한다고 기술돼 있었다. ‘한국인은 기분에 살고 기분에 죽는다’, ‘한국인의 기분을 상하게 하면 될 일도 안 된다.’라는 예문까지 실려 있었다. 물론 ‘보약’, ‘눈치’, ‘한(恨)’, ‘대충’, ‘그냥이요’, ‘배가 아프다’, ‘쌤통이다’, ‘고소하다’ 등의 단어도 이해시키기 어렵다. 서로 기본 정서(情緖)가 너무 다르기 때문이다. 한국인에게 이성(理性)과 감성(感性)의 비율이 3:7이라면, 그들은 정반대이기 때문이다.)
  
  나는 여태껏 외국인에게 한국말을 가르쳐보기 전에는 한국어가 얼마나 복잡하고 어려운지 몰랐다. 존칭어(尊稱語), 겸양어(謙讓語), 하대어(下待語), 공대어(恭待語) 그리고 복잡한 인칭대명사(人稱代名詞) 등이 그렇다. 이는 결국 모든 외국어는 다 배우기가 쉽지 않다는 걸 의미한다. 미국인이 영어를 쉽다고 하는 것이나, 한국인이 한국어를 쉽다고 하는 것이나 본질은 같다. 자기 나라 말을 외국인에게 가르쳐 볼 필요가 있다는 것이 내 생각이다. 유럽인들도 남몰래 영어를 열심히 배운다. 나와 함께 여행했던 친구들 가운덴 스위스인, 스페인인, 스웨덴인, 프랑스인 등 비영어권 친구들도 많았다. 이 친구들도 수시로 나처럼 주머니에서 두툼한 영어 사전을 꺼내 (스마트폰 없던 시절) 단어를 찾아가며 대화를 했다. 이들 역시 영어를 골치 아파했다.
  
  나는 내 생애 처음으로 선생님이란 칭호(稱號)를 들었다. 그것도 진짜 선생님으로부터. 아니 진짜 박사님들로부터. 이분들은 모두가 미국 명문대 학위 소유자였다. 나와 비 오는 날 밤 신촌고개에서 처음 만난 짐 신부님은 예일대 사학과, 하버드대 심리학과 그리고 로욜라대 미술사 박사학위 소유자였다. 나는 외국인에게 한국어를 가르치기 시작하면서 내가 필요한 자료도 찾고 공부도 할 겸 서강대학교 도서관(한국 최초의 완전 개가식開架式)에서 살다시피 했다. 내가 궁금한 건 그 안에 다 있었다. 가끔은 청강(聽講)도 했다. 참으로 행복한 나날이었다. 돈을 벌 때의 기쁨과 보람과는 또 다른 차원의 가치(價値) 발견이었다.   -Koreans live and die by their emotions-
  
  Finally, a few days later, I ran across the individual in question in the guest room of the Sogang University priests' residence. He was a 50-year-old Filipino-American priest. His bright face and grin dispelled my anxiety in an instant. We decided to use his textbook from Myeongdowon as well as the Korean textbook from Yale University. Although I used textbook example sentences in the middle, I mostly used a conversational manner of asking and replying. This is due to the emphasis on developing linguistic communication abilities, such as speaking Korean.
  
  The fact that he shook his head at the conclusion of each phrase and said, "Korean is so difficult," is a pretty intresting phenomena. "It's too difficult. I ache in my brain," he remarked. Next, I said, "No. Easy to learn Korean. Anyone may learn how to read, write, and speak Korean after practicing for a month or two. Count on my word. English is quite challenging. No matter how much I practice, I soon forget English words and can't speak them clearly. It is particularly challenging to pronounce words that are not in Korean." We communicated with each other in English, of course.
  
  When I mentioned this, he instantly corrected himself and spoke again. "No, English is the simplest." English is a pretty easy language. Let me provide an example. 'I' is 'ai' in English; 'you' is 'yu'; 'woman' is'sh';'man' is 'hi'; and 'we' is 'wi'. English is quite basic and straightforward. In Korean, however, self is na/jo/joui/imja/ jasin/sojeo/soja/sosaeng/... while 'you' is neo/jane/jagi/dangsin/imja/daeg/sonsang/juinjang/gdae. Oh, how complicated and tough it is. "Am I correct?" He was sure. In fact, while I was teaching other foreigners, I heard almost the same thing.
  
  'Giboon' was one of the most difficult Korean terms to describe. The term 'giboon' is even used in the opening chapter of Yale University's Korean textbook. To get along with Koreans, you must first grasp what 'giboon' means. There were also sample statements like 'Koreans live by moods and die by moods' and 'If you insult Koreans' giboon, there is nothing you can do.' Of course, there's 'Boyak,' 'Nunchi,' 'Han,' 'Daechung,' 'It's simply Gunyangiyo,' 'Baega Apuda,' 'It's Saemtong,' 'Gosohada,' and so on. For outsiders, the terms are also difficult to grasp. This is due to the fact that the underlying feelings are so different. (Foreigners have the exact opposite ratio of reason and emotion as Koreans, which is 3:7.)
  
  I had no concept how complex and challenging the Korean language was until I started teaching it to foreigners. Honorific language, modest language, inferior language, public speech, and complicated personal pronouns are examples. As a result, not all foreign languages are simple to learn. I believe that through educating non-English speakers, even native English speakers may learn how tough English is. Europeans are likewise dedicated to learning English. Many of my trip companions were non-English speakers, including Swiss, Spaniards, Swedes, and French. These buddies, like myself, drew big English dictionaries from their pockets from time to time (back when cellphones didn't exist) and conducted discussions while hunting for words.
  
  I heard the title of teacher from a genuine scholar for the first time in my life. Yes, from authorized scholars. All of these individuals were graduates of major American institutions. Father Jim, whom I first met on a wet night at Sinchon Pass, had a PhD in history from Yale University, a doctorate in psychology from Harvard University, and a master's degree in art history from Loyola University. I virtually lived at the Sogang University library (Korea's first entirely open access library) when I began teaching Korean to foreigners. It included everything that aroused my interest. I even auditioned on occasion. It was a genuinely joyful day. It was an awakening of worth that went beyond the delight and reward of earning money. (Continued from Part 8)
