  오늘은 75주년을 맞이하는 자랑스런 건국절(建國節)이다. 베란다에 태극기부터 단다. 항상 아쉬운 것은 국경일(國慶日)에 태극기를 다는 집은 아파트 기준 100세대라면 잘해야 10집 정도라는 것. 지역마다 다를지 모르겠으나 평균 그 정도도 안 되지 쉽다. 이 글을 읽는 분은 자기 주변 특히 아파트 단지를 살펴봐도 되겠다.
  
  이는 무엇을 의미할까? 나는 매우 회의적(懷疑的)이다. 과연 한국인들은 진정 일제(日帝)로부터 해방되기를 원했던 것일까? 일제 식민 치하(治下)를 수치로 느꼈다는 게 정말일까? 노예적 삶을 벗어나고 싶었다는 건 사실이었을까? 만약 그것이 진실이었다면 오늘 같은 大韓民國의 건국절은 내가 본 미국, 이스라엘 등의 나라들처럼 온 나라가 축 폭을 터뜨리고 집집마다 차량마다 건물마다 도로마다 국기가 걸리고 기쁨을 나눌 것이다.
  
  이보다 더 경사스러운 일은 없을 것이기 때문이다. 이는 다른 나라에서 확실히 증명된다. 세계 1, 2차 대전 후 식민지배에서 벗어나 건국(독립)을 한 나라들(약 140개국) 대부분은 자국(自國)의 건국(독립) 일을 가장 성스럽게 여기며 경축을 하기 때문이다. 나는 이 나라들 상당수를 그들의 독립기념(건국)일에 직접 가서 봤다. 특히 미국, 이스라엘, 대만, 칠레, 발트해 3국과 중앙아시아 국가 등. 그리고 정말 그들이 부러웠고 존경스러웠다.
  
  오늘날 성공한 대한민국의 출발은 UN을 포함 국제법에 따른 국가 구성의 3요소인 영토, 국민, 주권을 다 충족하면서 가능했다. 그러나 이를 두고 매년 8월 15일이면 건국 축제는커녕 말싸움으로 난장판이 된다. 원래 국내의 공산주의 추종자들은 그렇다 쳐도, 광복회와 국가 유공자 등이 건국절 반대를 주도한다는 것은 아무리 생각해도 언어도단(言語道斷)이다.
  
  참으로 부끄러운 일이 아닐 수 없다. 나는 지금까지 세계의 약 230개국이 한국처럼 자기 나라의 생일인 건국(독립기념)일을 두고 자국민들끼리 싸우는 걸 본 적도 들은 적도 읽은 적도 없다. 왜? 원천적으로 말이 안 되기 때문이다. 마치 가족 구성원이 자기 부모의 생일 날짜를 두고 옳다 그르다, 더 나아가 부모의 생일은 아예 없다고 싸우는 것과 같다. 이는 오직 패륜아(悖倫兒)들 혹은 호래자식(胡虜子息)들이 아닌 이상 있을 수 없는 일이다.
  
  나는 오늘도 기분 좋게 자랑스럽게 태극기를 들고 광화문(이승만) 광장에 간다. 이는 성공한 大韓民國에 대한 자부심이다. 나라를 잃으면 이는 불가능하다는 걸 나는 잘 알고 있다. 이미 그런 징조는 곳곳에 보인다. 자기 나라 국기인 태극기 거는 걸 창피스럽게 생각하고 태극기 운동을 폄하하는 자들이 많기 때문이다. 아마 이들은 일제 강점기로 되돌아가도, 아니 더 사악(邪惡)한 북괴와 중공 수하에 들어가도 태극기를 그리워하지 않을 것이다. 아니 더 행복해할지도 모른다. 원래 자유와 풍요를 누릴 자격이 없는 노예근성이 뼛속 깊이 박혀있으니까.

  This day, National Foundation Day, makes me proud.
  
  Korea was established 75 years ago on this day. The Korean flag is first hoisted on my veranda. It is always regretful that there are, at most, 10 residences for every 100 residents in apartments that fly the flag on holidays. This is probably less than what each region's average is. You can take a peek around you if you read this, especially in apartment complexes.
  
  Why does this matter? I have a lot of doubts. Did Koreans genuinely desire independence from Japan? Did they really feel ashamed of living under Japanese colonial rule? Did they really intend to flee slavery? If it were the case, the National Foundation Day of the Republic of Korea would be celebrated in a similar manner to the United States and Israel that I had seen, with the entire nation erupting in celebration as the flag was flown from home to car to building to road.
  
  The reason for this is that if it did, there would be no more joyous occasion than today. There is no doubt that this has been shown in other nations. This is due to the fact that the majority of the 140 nations that achieved independence from colonial authority following World Wars I and II hold the formation of their own nation (independence) in the highest regard. On the national holidays of several of these nations, I personally visited them. Particularly the three Baltic states, the United States, Israel, Taiwan, Chile, and the Central Asian nations And I had a lot of respect for them as well as enviousness.
  
  Korea complied with all three requirements for national composition under international law, including the United Nations: land, population, and sovereignty, making today's successful departure of the country possible. However, a verbal fight on August 15 every year causes chaos, let alone a founding festival. Initially, domestic communist supporters might. But it's a problem that the National Foundation Day resistance is being led by the Liberation Society and individuals of national significance.
  
  This is very regrettable. I have never witnessed or read about 230 nations battling among themselves on National Foundation Day (Independence Day), the nation's birthday, like Korea does. Why? Because it completely lacks logic. There is no parent's birthday, so it's like family members arguing about who is right about when their parents' birthdays are. Unless you are dumb and shallow this cannot happen.
  
  I enthusiastically and in high spirits carry my national flag to Gwanghwamun (Lee Seung-man) Square today. This is why I'm proud of how successful Koreans are. I am well aware that without a nation, this is not possible. Such indicators are already widespread everywhere. This is so that they might mock the Taegeukgi movement and feel embarrassed to fly their country's flag. Even if they go back to horrible N. Korea and the CCP or the Japanese colonial era, they might not miss the Taegeukgi. They could even be happy. Because slavery, which did not initially deserve freedom and abundance where is ingrained profoundly in their bones.
