  세계 배낭여행을 혼자 많이 하다 보면 별의별 사건 사고도 본다. 물론 단체 여행에서는 거의 나타나지 않는 일들이다. 가령 혼자 자유롭게 가고 싶은 곳을 간다. 한적한 공원이나 언덕을 혼자 걷기도 한다. 마음에 드는 곳은 오래 머물기도 한다. 친절한 사람과 대화를 나누다 보면 함께 있는 시간도 길어진다. 상대가 자기 집에 혹은 단골 식당에 초청하면 거절하기도 어렵다. 야경을 즐기기 위해 밤에 혼자 나가기도 한다. 친절한 현지인이 건네는 음료수나 과일을 받아먹기도 한다.
  
  이런 과정에서 끔찍한 사고가 난다. 문제는 피해자들 대부분은 여성들이란 점. 특히 혼자 여행을 하는 여성들이다. 이는 동서양 모두 해당한다. 내가 직접 피해자들로부터 들은 내용들이다. 폭력에 의해 팔다리가 부러지는 경우도 봤고, 주는 음료수를 먹고 기절해 현금은 물론 소지품을 다 털리는 경우도 봤고, 감금당한 뒤 성폭행당한 여성도 봤다. 죽음을 당하거나 실종됐다는 현지 언론도 봤고 게스트하우스 게시판에 실종자 이름과 국적을 적어 놓은 것도 많이 봤다. 가장 많이 본 곳이 인x와 파키xx 페x 브라x 태x 호xx 멕시x 등이다.
  
  안타까운 마음에 여성 배낭 여행자에게 위험성이 있는 곳에는 혼자 가지 말라고 하면 열에 아홉은 반박을 한다. 남자는 되고 여자는 왜 안되느냐고 따진다. 성차별론까지 꺼낸다. 아무리 좋은 여행이라도 안전을 우선해야 한다고 해도 별 소용이 없다. 대게 여성을 노리는 범죄자들이 많다는 것을 믿지 않기 때문이다.
  
  요즘 한국에도 하루가 멀다 하고 대낮에 시내에서 공원에서 지하철에서 불특정 다수에게 흉기를 마구 휘둘러 사상자를 내고 있다. 스토킹 범죄와 함께 데이트 폭력이 자주 발생하는 것도 다 여성을 표적으로 한 범죄다. 제x도 둘레 길을 여성 혼자 걷다 당한 사건을 포함 크고 작은 산과 공원 등지에서 이와 같은 사건이 터진다. 앞에서 말한 외국에서의 사례와 전혀 다르지 않다. 공통점은 여성이 혼자 다니다 당한다는 것. 이는 쉽게 해결될 문제가 아닌 것 같다. 인간이 존재하는 한.
  
  그렇다면 자구책이 급선무다. 호신술과 무기도 좋지만 가장 안전한 것은 주위를 잘 살피는 것이다. 특히 강변, 공원, 산과 둘레길 등 인적이 드문 곳은 피하는 것이다. 그런 곳엔 짐승이 나타날 가능성이 매우 크기 때문이다.

  Nothing is more important than life
  
  I observe a lot of accidents when backpacking throughout the world. Of course, they are uncommon on group trips. For example, you can go wherever you want, whenever you want. You can go for a solo walk in a peaceful park or on a hill. Some places you want to stay for an extended period of time. When you chat to someone who is kind, you spend a lot of time together. It is tough to say no when he asks you to his home or favorite restaurant. You go out by yourself at night to appreciate the scenery. You may also be given beverages or fruits by nice residents.
  
  Terrible mishaps occur throughout this process. The issue is that the majority of the victims are women. Women, in particular, who travel alone. This applies to both the East and the West. This is what I heard straight from the victims. I've seen ladies break their limbs with violence and faint after drinking alcohol from others who robbed them of all their goods and cash. I also encountered a woman who had been sexually raped while in guesthouses. I've heard local news outlets report that they were murdered or went missing, and I've seen a number of individuals post the names and nationalities of the missing on the guest house bulletin board. Many of these occurrences have occurred in Ind000, Pak000, Per000, and Bra000, etc.
  
  When I warn a female traveller not to go to risky locations alone because I'm anxious, nine out of ten women disagree. They question why I discriminate against men and women. It's pointless to encourage them to prioritize safety. Because they often do not believe that there are a large number of criminals that target women.
  
  Korea is currently experiencing injuries as a result of a guy holding a knife against an indeterminate number of people in a local park in broad daylight. Dating violence, in addition to stalking offenses, is common, all of which target women. Such events are common in mountains and parks, as well as when ladies are strolling alone on the paths of Jeju Island. This is similar to the situation in the previously stated foreign country. The common thread in this scenario is that it occurs while a lady is alone. As long as males exist, this does not appear to be a simple problem to deal with.
  
  Then I believe self-rescue tactics are necessary. Self-defense and weaponry are insufficient. It's also a good idea to be aware of your surroundings everywhere you go. It is especially important to avoid locations with few people, such as riverbanks, parks, mountains, and walking pathways. This is due to the greater likelihood of monsters, rather than humans, appearing in such locations.
