  2023년 9월 11일, 국부 이승만 대통령기념관 건립 모금이 시작됐다. 나는 이 기쁜 소식을 듣고 바로 가까운 은행으로 가서 적은 돈이지만 기부했다. 이는 지난 7월 27일 경북 칠곡군 다부동 전적기념관에 이승만·트루먼 대통령 동상 제막식에 참석한 것만큼 큰 기쁨과 보람이었다.
  
  나는 지난 40년 동안 수많은 나라를 여행했다. 그들의 대도시 중심에는 반드시 그들의 건국 대통령 동상과 기념관이 있었다. 참으로 부러웠다. 우리나라엔 없으니까. 그래서 난 오늘날 세계가 부러워하는 성공한 대한민국의 수도 서울 한복판에 국부 이승만 대통령과 산업화 주역 박정희 대통령의 기념관과 동상이 우뚝 서는 날을 손꼽아 기다린 것이다.
  
  모금이 시작된 다음 날 9월 12일, 배우 이영애씨가 이승만 대통령 기념재단에 5천만 원을 기부했다. 그러자 바로 뉴스에 떴다. 창피하지만 환영의 의미로 뜬 것이 아니다. 좌익들이 시비를 걸면서 뜬 것이다. 시비를 걸 게 따로 있지, 국부의 기념관을 못 세우게 하다니, 이들은 대한민국을 부정하는 셈이다. 배우 이영애씨는 명실공히 세계적 스타다. 2003~2004년에 방영된 ‘대장금’이란 드라마로 전 세계의 이목(耳目)을 코리아로 집중시켰다. 즉 오늘날 말하는 K-드라마의 원조라 하겠다.
  
  10월 3일, 배우 이영애씨는 야권 지지층과 좌익들이 집중적으로 공격하는 것에 대한 입장문을 냈다. 한마디로 요약했다. “그분께 감사한 것은 우리나라를 북한의 무력 침공으로부터 지켜내 북한과 같은 나라가 안되도록 한 것입니다.” 그래야 “좀 더 평안한 나라에서 우리 아이들이 살아갈 수 있지 않겠습니까”라고 했다. 이 말은 지역과 계층을 떠나 자식을 둔 대한민국의 모든 엄마 아빠가 하고 싶은 말일 것이다.
  
  배우 이영애씨를 비판하는 저들은 짐작건대 대한민국을 타도의 대상으로 끈질기게 공격하는 반대한민국 세력인 것 같다. 하지만 좀 솔직해져 보자. 당신들이나 나나 이승만 대통령이 자유민주주의와 시장경제의 초석을 놓고 김일성의 6·25 남침을 막지 못했다면 우리는 없다. 있다면 우리는 지금도 김정은 밑에서 병과 굶주림으로 죽어가고 있을 뿐이다.
  
  이를 염두에 둔 듯 배우 이영애씨는 “우리나라가 (북한 같은) 독재 공산국가가 됐다면 우리 아이들은 세계에서 가장 가난하고 자유가 없는 곳에서 살고 있을 것이다. 이 얼마나 끔찍한 일이냐”라고 했다. 멋있다. 당당하다. 투철한 국가관과 역사관 그리고 힘의 논리가 지배하는 냉혹한 국제 정세를 모르고선 할 수 없는 말이기 때문이다.
  
  더도 말고 덜도 말고, 이영애 씨 같이 애국심이 강하고 지혜롭고 용감한 분이 각 분야(언론계 정계, 학계, 예술.연예.영화.문학계, 법조계, 종교계, 기업계, 군부軍部 등)에서 열 명, 아니 세 명씩만 나와도 대한민국은 좌익사상에 물든 인면수심(人面獸心)의 반대한민국 세력에 넘어가지 않을 것이다. 이분들의 용감한 한 마디의 말과 행동은 천군만마(千軍萬馬)의 위용(威容)과 효력을 나타내기 때문이다.
  
  *2023년 9월 25일 현재 초대 대통령 이승만 기념관 건립 모금에 참여한 인원이 2만여 명이라고 한다. 모금액은 40여억 원. 이는 총비용의 15분의 1 정도밖에 안 된다고 한다. 5200만 국민의 수에 비해 너무 미미해서 무안할 정도다. 가능한 한 많은 국민이 참여하여 진짜 멋진 대한민국의 모습을 빨리 봤으면 좋겠다.

  On September 11, 2023, fundraising for the Rhee Syngman Memorial Hall began. I donated a small amount to a nearby bank, feeling joy and reward. I attended the unveiling ceremony of President Rhee Syng-man and President Truman's statues at the Memorial Hall in Gyeongsangbuk-do on July 27.
  
  Over the past 40 years, I've visited numerous countries and have been envious of the statues and memorials of their founding presidents in their big cities. I eagerly anticipate the day when the statues of President Rhee Syng-man and President Park Chung-hee will be displayed in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, a city that the world envies today.
  
  Actress Lee Young-ae donated W50 million to the Presidential Memorial Foundation of Rhee Syng-man on September 12, sparking a controversy among leftists who opposed a national memorial and denied the Republic of Korea. Lee Young-ae, a global star, gained attention for her drama Dae Jang Geum, which aired from 2003-2004, and is considered the origin of today's K-drama.
  
  Actress Lee Young-ae expressed gratitude for the protection of her country from North Korea's armed invasion, stating that it prevents the country from becoming like North Korea and ensures a more peaceful environment for its children. I think she emphasized that this sentiment is shared by all parents of children in the Republic of Korea, regardless of their region or class.
  
  Critics of actress Lee Young-ae argue that the Republic of Korea should not be overthrown due to its liberal democracy and market economy. Lee Young-ae believes that if Korea became an autocratic communist country, its children would live in the poorest and least free place in the world.
  
  She believes that if the country became an autocratic communist, it would be a terrible thing for the world. I thinnk her words are influenced by the harsh international situation dominated by strong views of state, history, and power logic.
  
  I believes that the Republic of Korea, a powerful nation, will not succumb to the forces of the enti-Republic of Korea, even if only a few brave individuals like Lee Young-ae emerge in each field, as their actions have a significant impact.
  
  *As of September 25, 2023, over 20,000 people participated in fundraising for a memorial to first president Syngman Rhee, raising 4 billion won. This is only one-fifteenth of the total cost, compared to the 52 million people in South Korea. I really want to see a truly wonderful Korea and encourage participation from as many people as possible.
