초음속 비행기가 남긴 우렁찬 굉음의 여운

나는 지금까지 이 지구촌에 존재하는 가장 우렁차고 요란하고 무시무시한 굉음을 다 들어본 것 같다. 하나는 자연의 소리로 분류되는 폭포의 굉음이고, 또 다른 하나는 인공의 소리로 분류되는 초음속 비행기가 내는 굉음이다.

가장 거대한 자연의 소리를 내는 곳은 세계 3대 폭포이다. 이구아수 폭포(브라질과 아르헨티나), 빅토리아 폭포(짐바브웨와 잠비아), 나이아가라 폭포(미국과 캐나다).

가장 요란한 인공의 소리를 내는 것은 초음속 비행기이다. 내가 이번에 경험한 8대의 블랙이글스와 한 대의 스텔스기가 내는 고막을 찢고 천장을 뚫고 땅이 꺼지는 듯한 굉음이었다.

(*굉음(轟音)의 한자 풀이에 답이 있다. 수레(자동차) 석 대가 모여서 굴러가며 내는 소리다.)

내가 본 세계 3대 폭포의 비슷한 점은 낙차(落差)와 수량(水量)이었다. 차이점은 폭포의 형태였다. 낙수의 양이 한 곳에 집중하느냐 아니냐로 굉음의 대소(大小)가 구분됐다. 빅토리아 폭포는 약 100ｍ 높이에 넓이(길이)는 약 1.7㎞. 길게 일렬로 쭉 뻗어 있는 것이 마치 하얀 커튼을 쳐 놓은 듯하다 해서 일명 커튼의 폭포라고도 한다. 이는 낙수의 굉음이 분산됨을 뜻한다. 나이아가라 폭포의 낙차는 약 55m로 낮은 편이다.

그러나 빅토리아 호수에 비해선 낙수가 한 곳에 쏟아지기에 그 굉음은 더 우렁차다. 이구아수 폭포는 크고 작은 폭포들이 약 300여 개나 있지만 역시 하이라이트는 약 80m 높이의 일명(一名) 악마의 목구멍이다. 이 좁은 곳으로 누른색의 물이 집중적으로 쏟아지는 낙수의 양은 상상을 초월한다. 거기서 나는 소리는 문자 그대로 지축(地軸)을 뒤흔든다. 세상 만물이 이 목구멍으로 빨려 들어가는 듯하다. 무시무시한 굉음, 악마의 목구멍으로 손색이 없다.

그러나 이번 서울공항의 에어쇼에서 경험한 초음속 비행기의 소닉 붐은 내가 지금까지 경험한 세계 3대 폭포가 쏟아내는 엄청난 굉음을 압도(壓倒)하고 말았다. 가장 짧은 시간에 가장 우렁찬 굉음이 바로 그 소닉 붐이었다.

지금 생각해도 블랙 이글스와 스텔스기가 내 귀청을 때리는 굉음과 함께 내 면전(面前)을 가로지르고 공중으로 치솟는 모습이 떠오른다.

일반적으로 자연의 소리인 숲, 폭포 소리 등은 사람에게 긍정적인 효과를 주는 알파파를 발생시킨다고 한다. 반대로 자동차나 비행기의 인공적 소리는 자연의 소리보다 훨씬 부정적인 많은 양의 베타파를 발생시킨다고 한다. 이 결과에 의하면 분명 소닉 붐(sonic boom)은 건강에 적신호인 베타파의 인공 소리다.

그런데도, 나는 가끔 삼위일체(三位一體)를 연상케 하는 초음속(超音速) 비행기가 내는 가장 짧은 시간에 가장 길고 가장 깊은 여운을 남기는 굉음이 그리울 것 같다.

The jet plane's memorable roar

I believe I have heard every loudest, scariest, and most scary roar ever heard in our worldwide society. The first is a natural sound, such as the roar of a waterfall, while the second is an artificial sound, such as the roar of a supersonic flight.

The three biggest waterfalls in the world provide the most natural sound. Iguazu Falls in Brazil and Argentina, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Zambia, and Niagara Falls in the United States and Canada.

The supersonic airplane produces the most apparent man-made noises. This time, I heard a roar, as if the ground was bursting through the roof and shredding the eardrums of eight Black Eagles and one stealth jet.

The three waterfalls I saw shared similarities in height and water amount, but differences were in form. Victoria Falls, also known as the waterfall of curtains, is 100m high and 1.7km wide, with a dispersed roar of falling water. Niagara Falls has a low drop of 55m, while Victoria Falls is 100m high and 1.7km wide. The loudness of the roar depends on the concentration of falling water.

Iguazu Falls, a massive waterfall with around 300 major and minor waterfalls, is known for its intense noise, particularly the Devil's Throat, which is 80 meters high. The volume of falling water in this area is so large that it physically shakes the earth's axis, causing the entire universe to appear to be swallowed into it.

However, the sonic boom of supersonic jets during the air show at Seoul Airport overpowered the immense roar of the world's three biggest waterfalls that I had previously experienced. The sonic boom was the most powerful noise in the shortest amount of time.

Even as I write this, I can hear Black Eagles and stealth jets roar over my face and soar into the sky.

In general, the sounds of woods and waterfalls, which are natural noises, are claimed to create alpha waves, which have a good influence on humans. The manufactured sound of vehicles or airplanes, on the other hand, is claimed to create a high number of beta waves, which are far more negative than natural noises. The results show that the sonic boom is obviously an artificial sound of beta waves, an alarm for health.

Nonetheless, I suppose I'll miss the roar that, at times, reminds me of the trinity, leaving the longest and deepest lingering sound in the smallest amount of time that supersonic jets generate.
