  토요일에 광화문(이승만) 광장에 나가면 기분이 좋다. 볼거리도 많고 얘깃거리도 많기 때문이다. 누구와 만나도 마음 놓고 나라 걱정 등 세상 이야기를 할 수 있기 때문이다. 그중에서도 나는 태극기와 성조기를 들고 있는 사람과 대화를 많이 나눈다. 지난 토요일에도 그랬다.
  
  80이 넘어 보이는 노인이 태극기와 성조기를 들고 있었다. 다가가서 물었다. 태극기를 드는 건 당연하지만 성조기를 함께 드는 건 그만한 이유가 있지 싶은데 궁금하다고 했다. 그분은 얘기를 풀어 놓기 시작했다.
  
  그분은 6·25 참전 용사였다. 자기는 6·25가 끝난 뒤 한 미군의 도움으로 미국으로 건너갔단다. 처음엔 청소일부터 나중엔 장사 등 닥치는 대로 일을 해 돈을 벌었다고. 그렇게 미국 생활을 40년 넘게 하고 한국에 왔다는 것이다. 그리고 자기는 평소 미국에서 생각했던 노후의 삶을 그대로 살고 있다고 했다.
  
  나는 그분에게 돈을 얼마나 벌어야 그만둘 수 있겠느냐고 물었다. 그분이 말하길, "돈이 많으면 많을수록 불행도 함께 늘어난다는 사실을 빨리 아는 사람이 진짜 똑똑한 사람이라고 생각합니다."라고 발했다.
  
  그런 얘기를 들려주면서 그분은 자기는 지금 미국에서 번 돈으로 평소에 하고 싶은 일을 하면서 아주 행복하게 산다는 것이다. 그것이 바로 토요일마다 광화문(이승만)광장에 나와 모국인 대한민국 태극기와 제2의 고향인 미국 성조기를 들고 자랑스럽게 흔들며 애국가를 부르는 것이라고 했다.
  
  이곳에 이승만 광장과 함께 이승만 대통령 기념관도 가능한 한 빨리 건립됐으면 한다고 했다. 미국이 세계 최강의 나라가 될 수 있는 것도 미국을 건국한 건국의 아버지들 기념관과 동상들이 워싱턴 광장에 자랑스럽게 서 있기 때문이란 말도 덧붙였다.

  A cool old man I met last Saturday
  
  Going to Gwanghwamun(Rhee Syngman) Square on Saturday makes me feel good. Due of the abundance of stuff to discuss and view. I love that I can converse with anyone about the globe, even concerns concerning my own nation, Korea. I try a lot of conversations with people carrying the Korean flags and American flags among them. Last Saturday was the same.
  
  An 80-year-old guy nearby was holding a Korean flag and an American flag. I approached him with the question, "It's natural that you hold the Korean flag, but I wonder if there's a good reason to hold the American flag together." He started speaking.
  
  He had fought in the Korean War. With the assistance of a US soldier, he emigrated to the US following the Korean War. He said that working at random, from the cleaning date to the business, brought him a lot of money. That's how he arrived in Korea after almost 40 years of residing in the United States. Furthermore, he stated that he is leading his life planed in the USA in Korea, just as he did when he was an American.
  
  I asked him how much money I needed to make to quit making money. He said the idea of money. "You only need to make as much money as you need. It seems good to make a lot of money, but it also increases your misfortune. A man who knows the truth quickly is a real wise man."
  
  With the money he acquired in the US, he is now enjoying a very happy life and using it anyway he pleases in Korea. He held the national flags of his homeland, Korea, and the United States, his second homes, and joyfully waved and sang the national song at Gwanghwamun Plaza every Saturday.
  
  He expressed his wish that the statue of President Rhee Syng-man and the memorial hall will be erected here as soon as possible. As the memorial hall and statues honoring the nation's founding fathers stand proudly in Washington Square, so that our country, Korea may rise to become another proud and strong nation in the world, said he.
