  내가 나라 걱정을 많이 하면 부정적인 생각을 싫어하는 사람들은 듣기 싫어한다. 가난을 모르는 세대들은 그렇다 쳐도 나와 동세대인 사람들이 그런 반응을 보이는 것은 이해하기 어렵다.
  
  나는 지금까지, 아니 지금도 자주 꿈인지 생시인지 헷갈릴 때가 있지만, 분(分)에 넘치는 행운을 누렸다. 어릴 땐 상상도 못 했던 꿈을 실현했다. 성공한 대한민국이 없었다면 불가능했다.
  
  세계 곳곳을 내가 궁금한 곳은 거의 다 가 봤기 때문이다. 대부분 자유로운 개인 배낭여행을 했기 때문에 관광과는 거리가 먼 체험 여행, 즉 보통 사람들이 사는 모습을 보고 그들과 대화를 나누면서 인간의 보편성을 발견하는 것이었다. 그것은 자유와 풍요였다. 그들은 성공한 대한민국을 부러워했고, 나처럼 자유롭게 세계여행을 하는 것이 꿈이라고 했다.
  
  올 봄(2023. 5)에 다녀온 우즈벡과 타지키스탄 카자흐스탄은 물론, 방글라데시, 아프카니스탄, 파키스탄, 네팔, 파라과이, 볼리비아, 잠비아, 짐바브웨, 시리아, 팔레스타인, 말라위, 수단, 에디오피아, 불가리아, 루마니아 등은 물론, 인도, 중국, 러시아, 브라질 등도 대동소이(大同小異)했다. 도심에서 조금만 벗어나면 전혀 다른 세상이었다. 비참한 가난이었다. 마치 한국의 50년대와 60년대 중반까지의 생활상을 본듯했다.
  
  흔히들 사람 사는 곳은 다 비슷하다고 한다. 사실이었다. 어딜 가나 빈부격차가 있고, 좋은 사람 나쁜 사람이 있고, 주인 의식을 가진 사람과 노예(거지)근성을 가진 사람이 있었다. 물론 나는 이런 현상을 직접 보고 대화를 통해 확인했다. 보통 사람들이 사는 곳, 아니 빈곤층이 사는 동네 구석구석을 돌아보고, 집에서도 노상에서도 그들과 어울려 식음(食飮)도 함께 했다.
  
  이때마다 절실히 느끼는 것은 한국은 망하면 안 된다는 것이었다. 이미 춥고 배고픈 시절을 까마득히 잊어버리고, 자유와 풍요가 몸에 밴 사람들은 가난을 견디기 어렵다. 내가 직접 보고 들은 빈민국 사람들은 지금, 이 순간에도 지구촌 곳곳에 만연해 있다.
  
  사람은 아는 만큼 보이고, 본 만큼 안다고 한다. 어제 인천공항행 전철을 탈 일이 있었다. 지하철 내에는 여행자들의 크고 작은 끌낭들로 가득했다. 엄청난 수의 한국인들이 세계여행을 한다. 보기 좋았다. 가난한 나라에선 볼 수 없는 퐁경이니까. 아쉬운 점이라면 대부분이 관광여행자들이란 점. 그들의 고급 의상과 대형 끌낭들이 그랬다.
  
  외국 여행을 통해 빈민국 체험도 해볼 것을 권한다. 저절로 대한민국이 자랑스럽고 고맙게 여겨질 것이다. 그들은 엄청 가난하지만 충분한 땅과 천연자원, 젊은 인력, 지능과 손재주 등 모든 걸 다 가졌다. 한국보다 못할 게 없다. 단, 예나 지금이나 그들에게 없는 것이 있다. 대한민국의 이승만, 박정희 같은 위대한 지도자들이다. 현장을 보면 바로 느껴진다.

  Seeing is believing.
  
  I'm concerned about Korea. People who despise bad notions, of course, do not want to hear me. Only generations that have never seen poverty are possible. However, it is difficult to comprehend why others my age have such a strong reaction.
  
  I still have doubts about whether my life is a dream or a reality. It's because I've been really fortunate in my situation. I fulfilled a dream I never imagined when I was young. It would not have been possible without the Republic of Korea's success.
  
  It's because I've been to practically every place I was interested in. The majority of them were free individual backpacks, thus it was to uncover human universality by seeing and chatting to everyday people. It was a time of wealth and freedom. They admired the Republic of Korea's prosperity and expressed a desire to travel freely across the world like me.
  
  Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Paraguay, Bolivia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Syria, Palestine, Malawi, Sudan, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, and Romania, as well as India, China, Russia, and Brazil, were all comparable to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan, which I visited last spring (2023.5). A little distance from the city center, it was an entirely other world. It was due to poverty. It seemed as if I had witnessed life in Korea between the 1950s and the mid-1960s.
  
  People frequently claim that the environment in which they live is similar. It was correct. There were the rich and the poor everywhere, as well as good and evil individuals, as well as those with a sense of ownership and a slave mindset. Of course, I witnessed this phenomenon in person and confirmed it over a conversation. I sought around every corner of the neighborhood for regular folks or the impoverished, and I hung out with them at home and on the street, eating and drinking with them.
  
  At the time, I was convinced that Korea should not go bankrupt. It is impossible to tolerate poverty for people who have already forgotten the cold and hungry days and who have freedom and richness in their bodies. The underprivileged folks I've seen and heard about are everywhere around the world right now.
  
  It is claimed that a person knows just what he knows and only what he sees. Yesterday, I had to take a subway to Incheon Airport. The subway was packed with both huge and tiny drag bags of passengers. A large number of Koreans travel all around the world. It looked good. It's a breathtaking sight that cannot be witnessed in underprivileged nations. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them are tourists. Their high-end clothing and large travel bags like that.
  
  I recommend you travel abroad and experience an underdeveloped nation. At that point, you will be grateful for and proud of the Republic of Korea on its own. Despite their great poverty, they possess vast land, natural resources, youthful labor, intellect, and dexterity. Nothing is worse than Korea. But unfortunately, what they lack is that they don't have outstanding leaders, just like the Republic of Korea's Rhee Syng-man and Park Chung-hee. As soon as I observed the sight of their life, I knew it.
