  사이판을 여행 중인 50대 중년 남성이 내 여행기를 읽고 그대로 실천을 하고 있다는 소식을 전해왔다. 그도 세계여행을 많이 하는 사람이라고 했다. 그러나 언제나 아쉬운 것은 다른 외국인들과 영어로 대화를 나누지 못하는 것이었다고. 그러던 중 내 여행기의 일관된 표현, “내가 먼저 외국인에게 말을 건다. 그러면 대화가 시작된다.”라는 것에 힘입어 그대로 했다는 것이다. 그리고 역시 내 말대로 대화가 시작되더란다.
  
  그는 해변에서 만난 현지인에게 용기를 내서 먼저 말을 걸었다고. 상대는 당연히 영어권 원주민이니까 영어로 답했다. 그리고 묻고 답하고가 진행됐단다. 자그마치 3시간 동안이나 한가롭게 사이판 해변에 앉아 얘기를 나눴다고.
  
  그러나 대화의 약 90%는 현지인이 말했고 자신은 간단히 그렇다, 아니다, 멋있다. 아름답다, 동의한다, 이해한다, 잘 모르겠다, 천천히 말해달라, 정말 재미있다, 한국도 좋은 나라다, 등 아주 기본적인 대응만으로도 오랜 시간을 함께할 수 있었다는 것이다. 그리고 그는 드디어 눈으로만 봐왔던 세계여행을 대화를 나누는 세계여행을 하게 됐다며 나에게 고마움을 표했다. 오히려 내가 더 고맙다고 했다.

  영어권 사람과 처음으로 3시간 동안 대화를 나누셨다는 말씀을 듣고 저가 더 즐겁고 흥미로웠습니다. 아시다시피 대부분 사람은 세계여행을 통해 나름대로 즐거움과 보람, 교훈을 얻는다고 생각합니다.
  
  그중 하나는 외국인과의 대화임을 잘 알고 있기에, 저는 그것을 많은 사람에게 전해주려고 계속 대화하는 여행기를 쓰고 있습니다. 한국인은 학력이 높아서 용기만 내면 외국인들과 대화를 나누며 또 다른 차원의 가치와 보람을 느낄 수 있다고 믿기 때문입니다.
  
  물론 처음에는 조금 어색하지만, 계속 하다 보면 조금씩 익숙해집니다. 그리고 나중에 자신이 외국 여행에서 경험한 것 가운데 가장 인상적이고 보람 있는 것 가운데 하나가 세계인과 나눈 대화였음을 알게 됩니다.
  
  어쨌든 세계여행 중 가능한 한 많은 대화를 통해서 더 즐겁고 신나는 추억을 만드시기를 바랍니다.

  The first happy mail I've ever received
  
  A middle-aged man in his 50s who is visiting Saipan today told me that he is reading my travelogue and following it exactly as written. He said to travel extensively over the world. However, he said it was always unfortunate not to be able to communicate with other foreigners in English. He was inspired by the saying I used in my travels. "I first start to speak to a foreigner. And then it begins." And he agreed with me.
  
  He got the bravery to approach a native he encountered on the beach. Of course, he responded in English because he was a natural English speaker. The two then started talking to each other. They sat on Saipan Beach and spoke for at least three hours.
  
  However, the locals spoke for around 90% of the conversation. I just answered yeah, no, I agree, I understand, I don't know, please talk slowly; it's a lot of fun, Korea is also a lot of fun, and so on. He said that he could spend a long time with a very basic response. And he thanked me by adding, "I really tried talking to a foreigner through my world trip that I've never experienced in my life." I told him it was my pleasure.

  I was delighted and thrilled to hear that you had your first three-hour talk with an English speaker. As you are aware, most people enjoy and benefit from international travel in many ways.
  
  I am fully aware that one of them is a discussion with foreigners, therefore I am writing a travelogue in which I continue to speak to many people in order to communicate it. Because Koreans have a strong intellectual background, I believe that if they have the confidence to speak with foreigners, they will feel a higher degree of value and reward.
  
  Of course, it's awkward at first, but as you keep trying, you gradually become used to it. Later, you realized that one of the most remarkable and fulfilling parts of a foreign travel was chatting with people from all over the world.
  
  Anyway, I hope you have as many interesting and intriguing talks as possible throughout your travel across the world.
