여행 중 만난 사람들171 – 한국의 주인이 누구인지 헷갈린다.

코타에서 맞이하는 2023년 마지막 날 오후 5시. 오늘은 우리가 묵고 있는 8층 숙소의 옥상에서 석양을 보기 위해 올라갔다. 대부분이 말레이 본토에서 여행 온 관광객들인데 매우 보기 드물게 크로아티아에서 온 여행자 한 명을 만났다. 사실 이곳 코타에 온 뒤 처음 만난 서구인이다. 우리는 서울에서 왔다고 하니 이 친구는 반색하며 반겼다. 서울에서 오랫동안 근무한 친구 덕택에 서울을 잘 안다고 했다. 그는 20일 휴가를 얻어 동남아 여행을 한다고. 이번 코타를 포함 태국의 치앙마이와 베트남의 사이공, 캄보디아의 앙코르왓 그리고 마지막 코스로 서울을 거처 귀국한단다.

우리가 8년 전 50일간, 크로아티아를 포함 세르비아 코소보 보스니아 등 발칸 국가를 다 돌아봤다고 하니 이 친구 깜짝 놀란다. 이렇게 이야기는 술술 풀린다. 내가 크로아티아는 유고슬라비아 전쟁과 인종청소 등 참혹한 사건을 겪은 뒤 독립한 위대한 나라라고 했다. 이 친구는 바로 반문했다. 한국은 중국으로부터 2천 년, 일본으로부터 35년, 북괴의 남침을 방어하는 등 더 위대한 나라다고. 이 친구의 한국에 대한 해박한 지식에 놀라지 않을 수 없었다. 다음 얘기가 나의 폐부(肺腑)를 찔렀다.

한국인들은 그처럼 어렵게 세운 대한민국을 왜 한국인 스스로 자부심은커녕 자기 나라를 부정하고 공산주의를 좋아하느냐다. 자기는 부모님으로부터 구공산권 치하의 비참한 삶에 대해 많이 들었다고 했다. 자유와 풍요를 누리는 한국인들이 왜 최악의 공산주의 집단인 북한과 중공을 좋아하느냐다. 어떻게 그렇게 잘 아느냐고 했더니 서울에 있는 자기 친구가 그런 안타까운 심정을 전해준다는 것이다. 그는 덧붙여 최근 김정은이 말한 대한민국은 같은 민족이 아니므로 핵공격을 해도 된다는 뉴스를 들었다고 했다. 이처럼 세계인들은 한국인과 달리 한국에 대한 걱정 등 관심이 많다.

나는 기원한다. 모든 한국인이 새해마다 자신의 복을 비는 만큼, 더 강하고 부유한 대한민국을 만들어 달라고 간절히 비는 모습과 함께 TV를 통해 전 세계에 전달되기를. 그래서 다시는 한국을 핵 공격을 하겠다거나 사사건건 주권침해를 하는 안하무인(眼下無人) 격의 빨갱이 공산주의들이 한반도에 얼씬도 못 하도록. 오늘 만난 크로아티아 친구처럼 정작 우리가 해야 할 책임과 의무를 세계인들이 대신 걱정을 해주는 모욕과 수모를 더는 느끼지 않기 위해서도.

People met on my backpacking171 - Foreigners Worrying About Korea

We walked to the top of our eighth-floor hotel building to watch the sunset on the final day of 2023. The majority of visitors were from Malaysia, but the first Westerner we had encountered since coming was a Croatian tourist. He'd had a long-time buddy who lived in Seoul, so he knew the city well. He was on a 20-day vacation and heading to Southeast Asia. On his tour, he will stop at Seoul, Angkor Wat, Saigon and Chiang Mai, Thailand.

He was startled to find that we had spent 50 days in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia, and other Balkan nations eight years before. The tale progressed. I informed him that Croatia was a wonderful country that got independence following horrific tragedies such as the Yugoslav War and ethnic cleansing. He immediately asked me. He went on to say, "Korea is the greatest country that suffered 2,000 years from China, 35 years from Japan, and defended against N. Korea's invasion." His great understanding of Korea astounded me. His next story astonished me even more.

He said that Koreans are dumb. It's because Koreans prefer communism than a successful Republic of Korea. He said that his parents had told him a lot about horrible life under the former communist dictatorship. I questioned him where he acquired his information about Korea since he stated he couldn't understand why Koreans who have freedom and wealth admire N. Korea and the communist dictatorship, the worst communist parties in the world. He claimed to have learned the facts from a buddy in Seoul. He further stated that he recently learned that the Republic of Korea, which Kim Jong-un indicated, is not of the same ethnic group, hence launching a nuclear assault is acceptable. It's uncomfortable to admit, but the fact that people all across the world are increasingly interested in Korea, including concerns about it.

As people pray for their blessings each new year, I hope that all Koreans will pray for Korea to become a stronger and wealthier country via television. Thus, I hope that no more foreigners, like the Croatians, are concerned about Korea in order to prevent North Korea from threatening to launch a nuclear strike on South Korea or the CCP, the communist dictatorship, from breaching South Korea's sovereignty again. It's our issue, not theirs. There shouldn't be any more shame on earth.
